What is a Psychiatric institution?

• A Psychiatric Institution is where mentally ill people go for treatment or help for problems such as clinical depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc.

• In some cases people are confined to special rooms or wards depending there condition so they can get the treatment they need.

History of Psychiatric Institutions

• The first two Psychiatric institutions were open in the late 1700s in Williamsburg, Virginia.

• Through out the centuries psychiatric institutions have changed their treatments and conditions of sanitation and living.

• Many institutions were very unsanitary which caused disease and deaths of patients in the hospitals.

• Here are some treatments use in the late 1900s to treat mentally ill patients.

Lobotomy

• Accepted from the 1950s to 1960s lobotomy was a procedure in which a doctor inserted an icepick in through the patients eye to alter the brain in attempt to control the patients behavior.

Hydro Therapy

• Was a treatment where patients were exposed warm baths or showers to calm them down.

Insulin Shock Therapy

• Insulin shock therapy was still seen as the only option which produced any noticeable effect on patients.

• Patients were basically put into a coma and shocked with electricity.

• They were awaken by glucose through a tube in to the stomach or injected into the blood stream.

Education• Patients didn’t get any education due to budget cuts and lack of

workers to help them talk.• There wasn’t much communication with the patients either.• Many didn’t even know how to walk due to lack of workers/

volunteers in the institution.• Place mats couldn’t be provided to let them learn on their own.• Instead they were locked or tied up in their cribs or rooms.

Conditions• Conditions in the institution were usually horrible. • There was human feces or releases on the floor

because of the lack of workers/ volunteers at the hospitals.

• Also when it came to changing or feeding the patients some didn’t get the attention needed also because of the lack of workers.

Work ConditionsMental health nurses work in a variety of settings, including:• General and psychiatric hospitals• Substance abuse treatment programs• Home healthcare services• Community mental health agencies• Private practice

• Psychiatric nurses plan, document, and monitor the care of psychiatric patients. They also assist doctors with mental status exams and evaluations. Depending on training and education level, psychiatric nurses provide short term mental health therapy to their patients. They also educate their patients on good self-care practices.

• The schedules of mental health nurses vary. Nurses in inpatient facilities work rotating shifts that cover evening, night and weekend hours as well as holidays. Those in community agencies and private practice work regular business hours but may offer some extended hours for the convenience of working patients.

Mental Health Study Act, which assigned a joint commission to create detailed assessments of mental health care and the effect mental illness had on American society.

• The work toll through the years has been rising and is becoming a high demand job.

My life in the mental hospital

5:30 AM: Woken up by a nurse to take medicine,then allowed 30 more minutes of rest.6:00 AM: Woken up for “school”.6:10 - 6:30 AM: Change into jeans,no belt allowed.put on socks and slippers,no shoes with laces allowed,put on shirt.Brush hair and teeth.7:00 AM: Eat breakfast. Bacon,eggs,toast,and juice. Only I don’t. I don’t eat certain meats,eggs make me sick.So I eat my toast and drink half my juice.That gets marked down on my file.7:30 - 9:00 AM: Escorted by nurse through the hospital into the room used for school. Draw a picture then read a book.9:30 - 10:30 AM: Go to group therapy.Talk about why we’re there,set a goal,cry.11:00 AM: Vitals are checked. Questioned on how I feel,how I’m sleeping,do I want to hurt myself or others.11:30 AM to 2:00 PM: Free roam of the hall while a nurse watches us.Lunch. Marked down for only eating 20%.Schizo girl screams and hits a wall,attacks another patient.Nurses sedate and restrain her.2:30 - 4:00 PM: Free roam of the fenced in garden outside while nurses and the “coach” watches us.4:30 - 5:00 PM: We have dinner. Get marked down for only eating 40%.Vitals are checked again.5:30 - 7:30 PM: Free roam of the hall,some of the girls play cards in the lounge.8:00 PM: Take medicine.Allowed to make phone calls,but only for 10 minutes.Girl breaks down crying.I zone out while curled up in the floor.When someone snaps me out I asked “Am I in a mental hospital?”8:30 PM: Bed time. My room mate and I go to our room where the bathroom and shower are locked. I lie awake ,listening to the nurse check on each room every 15 minutes.12:00 AM: Finally fall asleep, only to repeat the day again tomorrow.
