The new Zetros is an impressive truck in the tradition of the highly versatile Mercedes-Benz conventional trucks. With this robust, cost-effective and always reliable off-road truck for the most extreme terrain, Mercedes-Benz is providing the modern solution to the increasing need for vehicles for extreme operations – e.g. even under the most difficult conditions – in great heat, dust, bad roads and the most extreme transport operations – the Zetros will deliver due to its superior mobility and outstanding traction.

Decades of off-road know-how and innovative technology combine to produce a modern truck design for off-roadoperations – e.g. from disaster relief to nation building, in public service, or for energy and construction industries.

The new generation of the all-wheel drive conventional truck is based on the chassis and drive-train technology of the Mercedes-Benz family of commercial trucks, which has proved itself almost a million times over – combined with an innovation cab concept.

The low height makes the new Zetros even more manoeuvrable and flexible off-road. It can use routes with low clearance height and has safer driver access. In addition, it can be loaded and transported more easily, e.g. on trains. Due to the low silhouette, bodies and implements can utilise the whole length of the vehicle. With the cab’s centre of gravity being behind the front

axle, the axle-load distribution is more even, both when empty and with loads, making handling steadier, and also the hood provides for a calm, intuitive ride and protection from outside influences over impassable terrain. The driver’s position situated behind the front axle and the chassis tuning combine to make an ideal workplace way off the road.

The engine and auxiliary units are easily accessible just by opening the hood of the Zetros – without tipping the driver’s cab. That makes it easy and simple to do mainte-nance work or repairs, while passengers and material can remain in the cab.

The Off-Road ChassisEvery Job. Every Climate. Every Terrain. Every Time

Permanent all-wheel drive. With its permanent all-wheel drive, the Zetros is outstandingly well-equipped for operations over the most difficult terrain and under extreme conditions.

Two-speed transfer case with off-road gear ratio of 1:1.69. The two-speed transfer case increases tractive power under extreme conditions by nearly 70% and allows the Zetros to crawl at very low speeds.

Strengthened Frame. On the basis of the straight frame taken over from the heavy duty Mercedes-Benz trucks, a robust and durable ladder-type frame has been designed with open C-section longitudinal members and bolted C-section cross members. Inner reinforcements make sure they withstand the greatest loads. The front end of the frame has also been re-designed and reinforced to allow front implements to be mounted, or the vehicle to be suspended-towed. In addition, the frame design provides an extremely versatile basis for individual bodies.

Single tires. The single tires provide additional traction as the rear wheels run in the tracks of the front wheels.

To provide the necessary ground clearance for the Zetros, 14.00 R 20 tires are fitted.

Central tire inflation system. With the optional central tire inflation system the Zetros is able to adjust the tire pressure to varying ground conditions such as road, rock or sand while driving. A lower tire pressure enlarges the contact surface of the tires, at the same time the ground pressure is reduced to prevent the vehicle sinking in on poor load-bearing subsoil (e.g. sand).

Special spring-damper-tuning. The robust and maintenance-free chassis layout with its long spring travel, shock absorbers and stabilisers is designed for off-road operations. Its long spring travel makes driving comfortable. Parabolic springs are used for the axle suspension. For adjusting the axle-load, other versions are possible.

Fording. With fording-proof headlights, higher-situated ventilation and air-intake over the cab, the standard Zetros is able to cope with a fording depth of 0.8 m – and with the help of special features – even a depth of up to 1.1 m is possible(with tire configuration 14.00 R 20).

Cab and Ergonomics The advantages as the driver sees them


Because of the conventional truck design, the position of the cab behind the front axle has great advantages for the driver – especially for off-road operations. The hood in front encourages intuitive steering, provides outstanding protection against outside influences and the favourable weight distribution gives steadier handling over impassable terrain.

And: the standard of comfort for both driver and co-driver is increased enormously. Getting in and out is easier and safer, the lack of an engine tunnel gives more freedom of movement in the cab and the generous space allows three modern individual seats to beinstalled – plus stowage. In addition, the ergonomic

arrangement of the instruments makes it easy to control the vehicle – in this way the driver can complete long and difficult routes more or less free from fatigue.

Engine. The drive unit for the new Zetros is based on the Mercedes-Benz six-cylinder in-line engine with intercooler (OM 926 LA) which comes up to the emission standards laid down for Euro 5 (Euro 3). The compact and light turbo-diesel engine with its 7.2 l produces a comfortable 240 kW (326 hp) and has a maximum torque of 1,300 Nm at 1,200-1,600/rpm.

Transmission. The hydraulically shifted transmissionG 131 with its eight forward and one short ratio crawler gear ensures that the Zetros makes excellent progress even through the most extreme terrain.

Fully-automatic transmission. When the Zetros goes off-road with the optional fully-automatic transmission, it is supported by all the advantages of an automatic transmission suitable for extreme terrain withouttraction being interrupted.

Permanent all-wheel drive. The permanent all-wheel drive is controlled using a transfer case with an integrated pla-netary differential. Between the front and rear axles the torque transfer is 1:3.21.

Planetary hub reduction axles. The high-load planetary hub reduction axles allow a technically possible axle-load of 7.5 t (optional also 9 t) on the front axle and – in connection with single tires – 9 t on the rear axle.

Differential locks. The mechanical differential locks on front and rear axles and in the transfer gear box – which can all be engaged manually by the driver when needed – are part of the newly-designed powertrain. When off-road, the standard-fitted inter-axle locks and transverse lock stop individual wheels from spinning and provide traction even over rough terrain.
