that the strength of our future rests on our heritage . .. and that nothing of value shou ld be wasted. That's why we saved the Radkey House and remode led it for use as our West Branch. And that's why we're currently restoring the Tips House :.is our New South Congress loca tion.
Authentic restoration involves a lot more than some new wiring and a few coats of paint. It takes exte nsive research , careful planning, and a sizable investment in time and money. But it has its rewa rds. Like the medallion we received from the Travis
Coun ty Historical Survey Committee for our work with the Radkey House. And the re ponse we get from other people who care as much about Austin as we do .
We appreciate the encourageme nt. We' ll con tinue to serve Austin through loca l investment and our comm itment to the comm unity.

MERCED~ McCAMBRIDGE (Gunnar Jonsson) is appearing for the third time on the Mary Moody Northen Stage. She appeared in ''Madwoman of Chaillot" in 1973 and "Desk Set" in 1974. Miss McCambridge, with her performance in her first film, "All the King's Men," assured the success of her motion picture career by winning an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. She was previously known nationally as a top ranking radio actress. Orson Well es has called Miss McCambridge "the world's greatest living
radio actress." In 1964, after a series of disasters on the Broadway stage that would have deterred a less determined artist, she established herself as a ranking star of the theatre in the challenging role of Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in which she appeared on Broadway for several months . Miss McCambridge, who has an Irish background, and still has a trace of an accent , was born on St. Patrick's Day in Joliet, Illinois, which has lately honored her by declaring Mercedes Mccambridge Week. She was graduated with honors in drama from Mundelein College in Chicago where she was a scholarship student. While still in her junior year at college, she signed a five year contract with NBC. At the time, Chicago was the hub of daytime shows, chiefly soap-opera, and Mercedes McCambridge could breathe life into the most hackneyed script. During the next few years she appeared on most of radio's famous programs-"Mercury Theatre," "I Love a Mystery," "One Man's Family," "Lights Out," "Inner Sanctum," "Jack Benny Show," etc. In her years on radio she has appeared in an almost incredible variety of roles, everything from a baby to an old hag. Toward the end of her radio career she auditioned for and won the role of Sadie Burke in Robert Rossen's "All the King's Men." As a result of her spectacular film debut, Miss Mccambridge was cast in "Inside Straight," "Lightning Strikes Twice," "Giant," "Suddenly Last Summer," "A Touch of Evil," "A Farewell to Arms," "Cimarron," "Johnny Guitar," and "Angel Baby."
Recently Miss McCambridge filmed ''The Exorcist'' in which she portrays the Demonic Possession of Regan. She has appeared also on most of the nation's prominent TV shows. She has starred in her own series "Wire Service" and "Defense Attorney" and has been the guest on everything from "Ed Sullivan" to "Bonanza." Her real love, however, has always been the Theatre and recently she has concentrated her efforts almost exclusively to the stage. In addition to "Virginia Woolf," she has appeared extensively throughout the country in "The Miracle Worker," "Candida," "The Little Foxes," "The Glass Menagerie," and "The Subject was Roses." She is also at work on a book about actress Sarah Siddons for the British publishers who published her first book, "The Two of Us." Miss McCambridge devotes much of her time to her position as Honorary Chairman of the National Council on Alcoholism. She has been cited by President and Mrs. Nixo~ by governors and mayors throughout the country, and by a Senate committee . She is the recipient of the 1972 Gold Key Award of the National Council. She received in 1974 an honorary doctorate from St. Edward's. It is with great pleasure we welcome back Mercedes Mccambridge to the Mary Moody Northen Stage.
FREDERIKA B. MERRIMA N (Director and set designer) received her A .B. from Sweet Briar College, her M.F.A . from Ohio University, and is currently completing Ph.D. work at the University of Michigan . Before coming to St. Edward's, she taught at the Na tional Music Ca mp in In terlochen, Michigan , and at th e Clevelend State Un iversity in Cleveland, Ohio. Besides variou s summer theatres , she has been affi liated with several professional regional theatres including Balt imore 's Cen ter Stage , The Pittsburgh Play house and The Cleveland Play House . Miss Merriman was last seen with Eileen Heckart in " The Corn is Green."
WILLIAM CREAMER (Jon) has appeared on the Mary Moody Northen Stage many times. He has appeared with Russ Tamblyn in "Nature's Way"; Jackie Coogan and Lyle Talbot in "Golden Boy"; John Saxon in "The Time of
·-1 Your Life"; Pernell Roberts in "Three Men on
a Horse"; Pat O'Brien, "You Can't Take it With You"; Peter Breck, "The Rainmaker"; and Carl Betz, "The Chase." Mr. Creamer worked with Miss McCambridge before in ''The Desk Set'' on the Mary Moody Northen stage.
He has appeared in several films including "The Great Waldo Pepper" and ''The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.''
Mr. Creamer is a member of Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Radio and Television Artists and Actors' Equity.
Mr . Creamer is a retired Chief Petty Officer of the U. S. Navy.
"The Pearly Gates" is based upon an anci ent Icelandic folktale which was first recorded in written form as a long narrative poem more than a century ago. David Stefansson, one of Iceland's foremost romantic poets until his death in 1964, ewrote the story as a play in 1941. Mr. Stefansson, librarian at Akureyri for 27 years, is famous for the lyric beauty of his po etry as well as for the tenderness, warmth, an d humor apparent in all of his writing. During the eight years following the original production of "The Pearly Gates" in Reykjavik, the play was translated and performed in Norway, Finland, Denmark, Scotland, and England. Two years ago the English Translation, titled ''The Golden Gate'' was adapted by W. J. Friederich and presented at Marietta College in Ohio. It is Mr. Friederich's version which we have used for this second American production here at St. Edward's University.

The Theatre Arts Program -A Unique Experience
St. Edward's is one of the few universities in the United Stated which offers students professional theatre on campus with top professional actors from television, stage and film.
No other university in the country offers its students the professional theatre program St. Edward's University does, and the coming season will add even more luster to the program.
In addition to its sumµier offerings at the Mary Moody Northen Theatre which will this season consist of three major shows with three major stars -St. Edward's will be affiliated with the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram, ,Texas, near Kerrville, and will be joining the 16-year-old outdoor Point Theatre on the Guadalupe River in a full season of four plays including two musical productions.
During the past three years, St. Edward's students majoring in Theatre Arts have had an opportunity to work with guest stars such as Mercedes Mccambridge, John Saxon, Pat O'Brien, Pernell Roberts, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Stefanie Powers. Julie Adams, Carl Betz, Peter Breck, Jackie Coogan, Frank Sutton, Bill Macy, Sal Mineo, Ed Nelson and Eileen Heckart.
The Theatre Arts teaching staff at St. Edward's feels this sort of exposure to professionals offers invaluable learni11g e~perience for students. The staff works on the premise that theatre departments can no longer afford to graduate amateurs. St. Edward's is in the forefront of training professionals and it expects to stay there.
Anyone interested in further information about the program should contact the Director of Admissions, St. Edward's University, 3001 S. Congress, Austin, Texas.

Before you throw away that old hat, dress, suit or rocker please call us. We are working at enlarging our inventory of costumes and stage furniture. If you have any old clothing, furniture or bric-a-brac in reasonably good condition we could use it to "dress" future St. Edward's productions. Please call the theatre and let us know what you want to get rid of and when we could pick it up . Your contributions, which are tax deductible, will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.
