As part of the project TRACZ (Testing Robotic Appli-cation For Catching in Zero-G) students working in the group “Space is More” and in the Robotics Circle KoNaR at the Wrocław Institution of Technology began testing this revolutionary technology connected to gripping under zero gravity conditions. Their task was to create a universal gripper that would be able to work in microgravity and vacuum conditions. Devices of this type are made of a membrane filled with granu-late, operating on the principle of pressure difference manipulation. The inflatable gripper adapts its shape to the object, and after the air is sucked out, the gran-ulate hardens, the membrane tightens on the object and thanks to that it can be moved.

Wroclaw students are conquering the cosmos

The project was successful! The innovative gripper - the first such device in the world - was tested on board the REXUS rocket. The rocket was fired 82 km from the Esrange Space Centre spaceport in Kiruna, Sweden at the end of March.

The project was part of the REXUS / BEXUS scientific program, organized by the European Space Agency. MBMPL was also one of the partners of the TRACZ project.

OUR INTERVIEW | 3NEWSLETTER | ISSUE XI | JUNE 2019

The Central Services (CS) department is responsible, among other things, for the safety of employees, environmental protection and maintenance of the facility, we talk with the head of the department, Kazimierz Matjas.

Safety and ecology above all

What does the CS Department do? Why is it needed at the MBMPL factory in Jawor?

There is a department in every company that has tasks similar to those that we implement in CS. Our main goal is to provide the best service possible, so that the plant operates according to the best stand-ards. We are responsible for issues that are not related to production, but thanks to which it can be carried out without interruption. The main tasks of the CS department include: plant protection, fire protec-tion, occupational health and safety, environmental protection, supervision of the first aid point, waste management, mobility issues, e.g. a car fleet and staff transfers to work, maintenance of buildings and prem-ises belonging to the factory, including repairs and cleaning service as well as office space management.

How many people do these tasks?

Our department currently employs 8 people, ulti-mately it will take on 11 employees. Our work is also supported by external companies, e.g. in the area of building management and car fleets.

How is a specific solution in the area of CS devel-oped and implemented?

The CS department fully identifies itself with Daimler’s

Page 4: Mercedes in Jawor

| OUR INTERVIEW4 MERCEDES-BENZ MANUFACTURING POLAND

motto “The best or nothing”, which is why we want to develop and implement the best possible solutions. We rely on applicable law, knowledge and profession-al experience as well as Daimler’s standards. These standards are mainly used when it comes to machine safety. In addition, the company also puts very much emphasis on, for example, ergonomics, so that we create safe and effective workplaces. In May, MBM-PL employees undertook training in the Ergonomic Assessment System introduced at the plant. In the future, each newly created position will have to have its own analysis in this respect.

A very important issue in the factory is the safe-ty of employees. What health and safety stand-ards apply to MBMPL?

Of course, we adhere to all legal provisions and obligations, but we also introduce additional solutions. Noteworthy, for example, the “EKS” system. Each employee receives an individual “EKS” key (Electron-ic-Key-System) with given privileges, so that he or she can work only in positions to which they have author-ized access. For individual positions, the system also has different levels of authority. For example, the assembly worker has the authority to operate the given machine, while the maintenance worker can also service the device. It should be noted that the Daimler standard is that for each workstation a proper

risk analysis is carried out already at the design stage. Thanks to 3D visualizations this process is much easier. By engaging BHB technology and employees at such an early stage, it is possible to diagnose incon-sistencies that could be difficult to remove or very expensive during the commissioning phase.

Another very important area is environmental protection. What can MBMPL boast about here?

Andreas Schenkel, CEO of MBMPL, outlined a very clear goal - we strive to make the factory in Jawor a

“green factory”. In order for these words to be fulfilled, every decision related to environmental protection is subject to analysis. We wonder if there is a pos-sibility to do something better and more friendly to the environment in relation to what is required by law. There are many such solutions in MBMPL. One worth mentioning is a central coolant cleaning system from the machining process, which definitely exceeds Polish requirements. Another interesting solution is the “Sigma DX” system, which is used to manage chemicals in the plant. We are also planning to imple-ment the “TRIAS” system that will support the waste management process. It should be emphasized here that during the tender, each company was audited in terms of waste management.

What will be your most important tasks in connection with the production launch planned soon?

The main challenge facing the CS department is taking over the responsibility for hall number 3, where production will begin in September. We are waiting for the building to be inspected for compliance with the construction project and the requirements of fire pro-tection, as well as supervision of the finishing works. We must also implement, among others an access control system and working time, security procedures for external companies, organize office and assembly positions, and a temporary first aid point. The coordi-nation of relocation of workers from Legnica to Jawor will also be a great challenge. As you can see, many challenges await us.

Thank you for the conversation.

The Purchasing department

What is the MBMPL-IPS structure and what are the qualifications of each team?

In my team, all non-productive goods and services are organized in 12 categories. These are: Construction Services, Building Equip-ment, Machinery, IT & Telecommunications, Tools, Electrics, Energy & Chemicals, Consum-ables, Logistics, Marketing, Facility Manage-ment and General Services. Each department employee is responsible for the procurement of one or more commodities. My team’s main competences are identifying the best suppliers for each non-productive demand and to nego-tiate the best possible prices and contractual terms and conditions for our company.

The Purchasing Department (MBMPL-IPS) has 11 employees responsible for negotiating and preparing purchasing contracts with suppliers of all non-productive goods and services. The director, Paul Schwarzmaier, talks about the work in the Procurement Department.

Page 7: Mercedes in Jawor

7NEWSLETTER | ISSUE XI | JUNE 2019 OUR TEAM |

What challenges does the Department face in the coming months?

Soon we will finalize the contract for the third assembly line of engines. This is the most ur-gent time. In addition, we must close many new contacts or change existing contracts to fit the current demand for goods and services.

What are the successes and achievements of the department? What are you particularly proud of?

The last two years have been very intense for us. The team’s success is daily work, the effect of which is negotiating and finalizing contracts with suppliers, thanks to which our factory can oper-ate and start production. I am extremely proud of the achievements of my employees.

What positions are currently being recruited to the Procurement Department?

We are currently recruiting for two positions. We are looking for procurement specialists with experience in procurement of general services.

What is the ideal profile for a job candidate in MBMPL-IPS?

The ideal candidate has to be a confident person who has the ability and likes to negotiate. The highest ethical standards are extremely important here. I also value accurate, meticulous and analytical peo-ple - these are the qualities necessary to create very high value contracts. In my department, first of all, solution oriented people that are willing to take on new challenges will be more than welcome.

On April 26, as part of the “Girls GO Technology” educational cycle, which familiarizes students with technology, a workshop was held, “How to get along with computer programming. “This time, the partici-pants of the program gained knowledge in the capital of Lesser Poland!

Girls GO Technology tame technology in ... Krakow and Jawor

Jawor came to Krakow at the invitation of FabLab Małopolska. Krakow’s modern education laboratory is a creative space for hobbyists, DIY enthusiasts, mod-ellers, architects, artists and engineers who, using available materials and tools, can create prototypes of devices and inventions. During the workshop, under the guidance of an expert from Indigobird, the produc-er of the innovative Stabilis software for production management (MES), the girls learned the basics of Python. This is one of the most popular programming languages in the world, whose name comes not so much from the snake-strangler, but from the popular comedy group Monty Python. In addition, they tested the installation of the Python and PyCharm CE envi-ronment and support for text files. They learned what the algorithm is and, most importantly, created their first independent programming project.

In May, traditionally at the Regional Museum in Jawor, the penultimate workshop devoted to HR was held. The girls learned how to prepare for an interview, determine professional predispositions and create good application documents. In contrast, in June, the participants had a virtual walk around the intelligent factory and “taming” together with specialists from Siemens Industry Polska, issues related to digitization and digitization of production.

TECHNOLOGY | 15NEWSLETTER | ISSUE XI | JUNE 2019

Before starting assembly and production work at the Jawor factory, MBMPL employees undergo training at various Mercedes-Benz factories and at suppliers of machines and devices that will be used in the Jawor factory. All this so that the production of engines runs smoothly and complies with the quality standards of the three-pointed star.

The last weeks are an intense time for the team that will be responsible for the processing at the Jaw fac-tory. MBMPL employees were trained at the plant in Untertürkheim as well as Heller, Gehring and Zeiss. At the Daimler factory, the team gained theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of machine opera-tion, programming and technology. They also worked

on production lines, where under the supervision of colleagues from Germany. They tested specialized tools for manufacturing the Nanoslide coating, they also tested crank cases at control and measurement stations. MBMPL employees also learned the realities of work in the measurement laboratory - everyone had the opportunity to spend the whole day there, thanks to which they learned the technology of measuring with coordinate machines. This knowledge was later deepened by training at Zeiss, where the specialists from Jawor learned to measure, program the machine, read and make reports. At Heller and Gehring, the team had the opportunity to practice emergency situations and techniques for such situations. These types of training allow for a more conscious approach to the production process and teach how to deal with problems that may arise in everyday work.

Austria

Graz

In the Austrian factory in Graz, one of the most iconic off-road vehicles in history - the Mercedes-G-Class. Their production began 40 years ago in 1979. The company Mercedes-Benz G GmbH, 100% owned by Daimler AG, is responsible for designing and supervis-ing the Mercedes-Benz G-series production.

Cars drive off one production line with many folding elements which are handmade. Experienced factory employees, some of whom have been working here from the very beginning, attach great importance to Mercedes-Benz quality. In addition to series produc-tion, the facility is famous for its test track located in the Schöckl mountains. Interestingly, one test kilo-meter driven on the track corresponds to the actual operation on a route of 50 km!

Graz

Forty-year-old from Graz

The history of the G-Class began in the sum-mer of 1969. Daimler-Benz AG and the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG (today Magna Steyr) began talks about possible cooperation. Both manufacturers had vehicles with excellent off-road properties - Mercedes-Benz Unimog and Puch Haflinger and Puch Pinzgauer. In 1971, for the first time, the concept of joint off-road car development was formulated, and agree-ment on the joint development of a light off-road vehicle probably took place in autumn 1972. In April 1973, a wooden car model was made, and in 1974, a prototype test was started with the ability to drive on roads. The production of the first Gelenda began in February 1979, shortly after the world premiere of the vehicle. The company Geländefahrzeug Gesellschaft (GfG) which was founded by both companies in 1977 claim responsibility.
