Curriculums There are two types of curriculums in the LEARN System. First, there are curriculums that YOU choose when you want to become certified, such as; Outboard Certified, MerCruiser Sterndrive Certified, or MerCruiser Inboard Certified. Second, there are curriculums that are “Automatically” assigned to you (by the LEARN System), once you become certified. These curriculums are named differently based on the year that your certification expires. For example, if you were Outboard Certified in the school year 2006/2007, you will be automatically assigned a curriculum that is designed to inform and allow you to “Maintain” your two year certification. It would be called; “Maintain Outboard Certified - Expires June 2009”. Self-Assigned Curriculums 1. Go to the “Catalog” area and perform a “Simple Catalog Search”.

2. For example, type in the word “Sterndrive” and make sure that you only have the checkbox for “Curriculum” checked. Press the “Search” button. Here you can press the “Self-Assign Curriculum” button for the “MerCruiser Sterndrive Certified Curriculum”.

Page 19: Mercury University LEARN - Mercury Marine · PDF fileMercury University LEARN ... English, French and Spanish ... Click on the title or school location in the Subject Area Menu to

LEARN User Instructions 1_12_09.doc 19

3. You can do the same to search for an Outboard Certified curriculum. Just search on the word “Outboard” and then Self-Assign the curriculum.

4. To see where you stand in regards to the completion of the specific curriculum items, you need to look at the curriculum in the Learning section, under the “Curriculum Status” area. In this example, the MerCruiser Sterndrive Certified Curriculum is visible. Notice that there is a “Trash Can” symbol over on the right hand side, so that you could delete this curriculum if you decide that you don’t want to get MerCruiser Sterndrive Certified. If the curriculum was assigned by your supervisor, the Trash Can will not be visible, and the only one who’s can remove the curriculum are the supervisor or a Mercury University Admin. 5. To view the status of the items in the curriculum, click on the blue text in the table.

Page 20: Mercury University LEARN - Mercury Marine · PDF fileMercury University LEARN ... English, French and Spanish ... Click on the title or school location in the Subject Area Menu to

LEARN User Instructions 1_12_09.doc 20

6. The curriculum now opens up and you can see the items that you have completed and the items that you still need to do. Notice the completion dates and the little green stars that appear in the table. You will notice that there are two parts to the curriculum. The top portion of the table shows the 9 Required Items and the portion on the bottom part of the screen shows 2 Items that come from a Requirement Pool of Electives. You need to click on the triangle symbol to expand the list in order to see all of the items that you can choose from.

Maintain Curriculums (Automatically Assigned) 1. Here is a curriculum that will normally be assigned automatically by the LEARN System. In this example, the curriculum was self-assigned by the user. You can see this in the area that’s labeled; “Assigned By”. For those who have this curriculum automatically assigned, it will say “System”, instead of “User”. 2. Click on the blue text which says; “Maintain Outboard Certified – Expires June 2009” in the table to see the 2 Requirement Pools that you’ll be able to choose from. Remember, to maintain your certification, you need to choose one Instructor-Led (ILT) course that is product-line-specific (i.e. Outboard or MerCruiser) and one item from a pool of “Electives”.

3. Notice that there are two Requirement Pools where you will have to choose one from each pool. This example shows “0 of 1 Items Complete” for each pool.

Page 22: Mercury University LEARN - Mercury Marine · PDF fileMercury University LEARN ... English, French and Spanish ... Click on the title or school location in the Subject Area Menu to

LEARN User Instructions 1_12_09.doc 22

4. Click on the triangle symbol in front of the pool to expand it and see all of the items that you can choose from. In this example, the pool of Instructor-Led (ILT) items has been expanded and you can navigate through them to find the course and/or location where you want to attend. The “Elective Pool” in the view below is not expanded. Click on the triangle symbol to expand and collapse it as needed, to see all of the items available. You click on the “Action Button” over on the right hand side to add the item to your learning plan. It’s important to note that the Pools of Items are different depending on the specific Certification that you’re trying to maintain (Outboard or MerCruiser).

Page 23: Mercury University LEARN - Mercury Marine · PDF fileMercury University LEARN ... English, French and Spanish ... Click on the title or school location in the Subject Area Menu to

LEARN User Instructions 1_12_09.doc 23

NOTE: There are some occasions where the view on the status page of the curriculum will display a Green Checkmark. This checkmark DOES NOT necessarily mean that the Maintain Curriculum is complete. It just means that one of the items in the requirement pool was completed sometime in user’s history. It may have been several years earlier. Remember, the requirements to maintain certification must be done in the two-year period starting after June 30th of the school year that you became certified, and every two years moving forward. For example, if the user attended an OptiMax II course in January of 2006 and then became Outboard Certified in April of 2007, then the OptiMax II course that was taken in 2006 does not count towards the Maintain Curriculum. The Green Checkmark on the folder icon is visible due to the OptiMax II in 2006.

Expand the curriculum to see the two “Requirement Pools”. Inside the Maintain Curriculum you can see the current status of the required item. You can determine the curriculum status by the “Required By” date column and the “Status” field. In this example, they both say 6/29/2009 and 0 of 1 Items Complete. This means that you need to complete one item from each pool by 6/29/2009 or your certification will expire on June 30th.
