Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute

Mercy General Hospital is home to the renowned Mercy Heart and Vascular Institute, which each year cares for more than 11,000 patients. The hospital is the largest cardiac-care provider in California, performing more heart procedures than any other hospital in the state. It also ranks among the state’s best for cardiac surgery outcomes. According to California data, Mercy General consistenly demonstrates among the highest survival rate in the state for coronary bypass surgeries.

While the Mercy Heart and Vascular Institute has long been at the forefront of medical advances, the technologies and integrated care models in use today have far outpaced the institute’s current facilities. The program currently operates within extremely confined physical space, posing significant challenges to accommodating cardiovascular innovations, technologies and medical equipment. “I believe I received the best possible treatment and care while at Mercy. It is absolutely amazing what Dr. Arvin Arthur was able to do. I know that I am alive and well today because of his skills. I am most grateful to him.”

—Bill Vance, who was treated at Mercy General Hospital following two heart attacks just months apart

Make an investment of the heartFor more than 150 years, the Sisters of Mercy have worked tirelessly to meet the needs of the Sacramento community. Their tradition of compassionate, outstanding care continues at the Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute by keeping our region at the forefront of cardiovascular advances.

Express your care for the health of the community with a philanthropic gift to support transformation of the institute. Current giving opportunities include:

Alex G. Spanos Heart & Vascular Center

The institute seeks funding to complete the Alex G. Spanos Heart & Vascular Center build out, including support to fully equip the cardiovascular operating rooms with vital new technologies. The project has already received strong community and business support, including a $15 million lead gift from local businessman and philanthropist Alex G. Spanos. With nearly $25 million already committed, $15 million in philanthropic support is needed to complete the project. Prominent naming opportunities are available at the center.

Chapel

The world-class Alex G. Spanos Heart & Vascular Center soon will offer the community extraordinary care and cardiovascular advances. Patients and families will find a place of spiritual comfort, peace, reflection and healing meditation in the center’s chapel, to be located at the entrance of the building. The chapel also will serve as a place of worship for Mercy’s community of doctors, caregivers and patients, as well as for the Sisters of Mercy. Your gift to support the chapel will bring comfort to the center’s patients and families. Naming opportunities are available, including for the altar and the chapel’s stained-glass windows.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Pavilion

Exercise-based rehabilitation programs can help restore the bodies, minds and spirits of people with heart and chronic lung diseases. Mercy General Hospital soon will integrate its cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation units into one spacious location in the Spanos Center, improving patient access, comfort, and care while accommodating a wider spectrum of rehabilitative services. The new pavilion will feature a broad range of specialized equipment; a locker room; computers for patients to access educational and health information; and an entertainment system. Philanthropic funding is needed to replace outdated machines with sophisticated equipment that includes integrated monitoring and feedback tools. Support also is needed to upgrade flooring to a material best suited for patients with physical limitations.
