The Lord allows the saints and angels to walk among us. Many miracles are happening each day and go unrecognized. On a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, my wife and I were able to visit the famous Loretto Chapel. It was walking distance from our hotel and the town square. We were not disappointed.
As the story goes, in 1873, the Sisters of Loretto, who had been in the territory since 1850, started the construction of the Chapel. An architect from France was used to design the building patterned after the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris with its gothic style that would be so different than the small adobe structures common in the area. A statue of the Blessed Lady adorns the very top of the steeple.
Well the architect died before the structure was completed and there was no access to the choir loft located inside the Chapel. Due to the configuration of the inside of the Chapel, local carpenters could not figure out what to do. There was no room for a traditional staircase. The Sisters prayed a novena to Saint Joseph to help them. On the ninth day, a stranger appeared in town riding upon a donkey. He said that he was a carpenter and could help them. He carried only a hammer and carpenter’s square. For six months he locked himself in the Chapel working. The “carpenter” then disappeared without leaving a bill or saying anything to anyone. What the Sisters found upon entering the Chapel was miraculous.
An ornate staircase had been built. But not an ordinary staircase. This one had two complete 360 degree turns made from a rare wood not available in the area. The staircase is held together with wooden pegs, no nails or glue. No center pole or support columns. All of the weight rests on the bottom stair. There are 33 steps rising to the top or the age of Christ when he was crucified. Construction experts and craftsmen have examined it on many occasions and cannot understand why it has not fallen. It is used daily since constructed. The railings were added ten years later to make it safer.
No one was ever able to locate the mysterious carpenter. Local wood shops had no record of the sale of wood or other building products to this mysterious man on the donkey. Ads were placed in the area newspaper searching for him but to no avail. The Sisters claimed that Jesus sent Saint Joseph to build the staircase. The staircase has been reported on the show “Unsolved Mysteries” and a movie was made about the Chapel called, “The Staircase.” The pictures were taken by my wife upon our visit. It is an incredible sight.

COLUMBARIUM
Dear Faithful Mercy,The Columbarium Garden of Peace has now received final approval of Bishop Duca and the Diocese. Work has now begun on this beautiful addition to our campus.In accord with the Diocesan policy four contractors were selected to bid on the columbarium project. They were Deumite Construction, Cangelosi-Ward, Arkel, and Charles Carter. The low bid was submitted by Arkel who has been awarded the contract. We are grateful to all of these fine companies and we are excited to work with Arkel.Pre-construction sales along with the contributions of three faithful Mercy families have made this project totally self-funded. There is no funding used from Traditions For Tomorrow for either construction or maintenance of the Columbarium Garden.The construction fence has already gone up and demolition and construction has begun. Please note this fence is for safety purposes during construction time. In the interest of serving our Church Family, and because of the COVID-19 effects on our economy, the pre-construction pricing of cremation niches will remain until construction is complete. Thus, at this present construction time, there will be no price increase.Please note that cremation burials are significantly less expensive than traditional burials.The Mercy Columbarium Garden is open to everyone – Catholic and Non-Catholics; Parishioners and Non-Parishioners alike.You may make a personal appointment; or have any questions answered over the phone by speaking with Michelle Schroeder at the Church Office at (225) 926-1883, [email protected] events of the pandemic will not stop the vision of Mercy and our Future together! Columbarium niches are available in two sizes - each cremain niche holds a space for two persons. They are $5000 for a small niche and $7500 for larger urn niches. Please know the Columbarium Garden of Peace is totally self-funding and uses NO TOP-OFF Traditions for Tomorrow funds for either construction or maintenance.
