October 2013

Dear Community Members and Friends of Mercy,

While change continues to sweep across our health care system, mercy iowa city celebrates a milestone of longevity—our 140th anniversary. the hospital opened its doors in September 1873 and has cared for the residents of southeast iowa ever since.

With that caring, we work to reach higher and higher levels of quality—the focus of this annual report. While there may be subjective components to notions of “quality,” it is also a specific and measureable concept. This report shares just a few highlights from mercy’s continued pursuit of quality and its outstanding measures.

i am pleased to share this report with our community, and i thank you for your continued loyalty and support. mercy iowa city is your hospital, dedicated to your health and well-being.

When it comes to hospital care, various organizations are tasked with attaching an objective number to the seemingly subjective term, quality.

The data these groups collect can help you choose where to go for hospital care.

H Medicare’s Hospital Compare program (hospitalcompare.hhs.gov) uses patient feedback and other measurements to provide information on the quality of hospitals nationwide.

In these surveys, Mercy Iowa City consistently scores high in patient satisfaction. For example, Mercy rates above both state and national percentages among patients who report that their doctors “always communicated well” and for patients given information about their at-home recovery.

Of special significance, 81 percent of Mercy patients surveyed last year said they would definitely recommend their hospital, compared to 75 percent of Iowa hospital patients and 71 percent nationwide.

H The Joint Commission is another independent source of information (qualitycheck.org). Joint Commission accreditation is recognized as a symbol of quality that reflects a hospital’s commitment to meeting high performance standards.

This year, Mercy again received Joint Commission accreditation, with special recognition for the Primary Stroke Center. This recognition shows that patients who arrive at the emergency room with symptoms of a stroke will be treated with the highest standard of care, said Lori Bracken, Mercy Clinical Project Coordinator.

H Kim Powers, Mercy Director of Quality, Patient Safety and Corporate Compliance, said readmission rates—patients who have to return to the hospital for care— are another area in which Mercy excels. Mercy reduced its readmission rate by 22 percent last year using several approaches.

Calling discharged patients at home and ensuring that patients understood their medications when they went home were among the areas emphasized.

“It involves helping patients with their transition of care,” Kim said, citing the home health staff, hospitalists, and nurses who work together to reduce readmissions.

H For patients in Mercy’s emergency room, wait times are short and satisfaction levels are high. And Mercy’s emergency room is typically the first stop for patients experiencing chest pain. As the only Accredited Chest Pain Center in Johnson County, Mercy features excellent “door-to-balloon” times, that is, the amount of time between a heart attack patient’s arrival at the hospital and the moment when blood flow to the heart is restored.

Mercy’s cardiac team has achieved national recognition for overall performance in heart attack patient care. Last year, the team beat the 90-minute national benchmark for door-to-balloon times for 100 percent of patients, with a median time of 53 minutes. And that’s important because saving time means saving heart muscle and saving lives.

“We have great physicians who do a great job of caring for their patients,” Powers said.

At Mercy, we believe quality is a daily pursuit, and we use the best criteria available to guide the way we care for our patients.

If you’ve never experienced Mercy quality, feel free to compare us to anyone else. You’ll like how we stack up.
