Dear Friends of MVC,

As we enter into this fall season, we offer you our annual report for your review. The theme for the 2013-2014 volunteer year was Allow The Light. This phrase came from a poem written by Mary Wickham, RSM, a Sister from Australia, and we first saw it on the wall at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.During their year the volunteers will bring light to those who crave it. Our hope for them, of course, is that they recognize the light in those they serve, in each other as community members, and in all those with

whom they work and meet. Lastly, our hope is that these Mercy Volunteers become transformed by the light and that the light of love and mercy is carried with them for their lifetime as they continue to live authentically in a counter-cultural way. Our desire for them is that they move forward with the courage to remember the trouble and triumph they witnessed and represent that to the world in a meaningful way. Each of you who support our Mercy Volunteers allow us to carry the light and the legacy

of Catherine McAuley into the future. Through your funds and prayers you Allow the Light and bring life to the mission of Mercy Volunteer Corps and to the Mercy Charism. Thank you for sharing your light with us. We are most grateful for your generosity. Peace and blessings to you.

Life exists in a very different way in Navajo Nation. Time moves slower. Things happen, simply, when they happen; there is less of a rush. Personally, this has been a very welcome change for me. I’m much more relaxed than I’ve been in, hmm, four years—imagine that. Each year of my undergrad, I got busier and busier and my stress increased. You could say I was... highly neurotic and constantly anxiety-ridden. I had a lot to do, and a lot of people were relying on me to make great things happen. Despite the self-inflicted chaos, I don’t regret any of it and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. But it definitely wore on my psyche. I got burnt out. Not that I’m not busy here in Navajo Nation, but it is nothing like the mayhem I encountered in college. The different go-with-the-flow environment is teaching me a lot about priorities. If I’m a few minutes late to work, it’s okay. If a sudden rain prevents a hike from happening—yes it rains here, you non-believers—there is always another day. If the legendary Navajo Nation Zoo is closed, we can always come back next week. Mold in the office? It happens. The sun usually shines and the world is peaceful. There are constant little reminders like these that seem to tell me, “It’s OKAY. You are going to be OKAY.” These lessons are definitely present at my work site,

St. Michaels Association for Special Education. A couple of years ago, SMASE experienced some bad luck and ended up in a pretty bad place financially. Through hard work and quick thinking, SMASE endured. But the employees took the brunt of the financial problems. Despite hours being cut and pay being decreased, they stayed here, for the kids. It’s very admirable. Now that SMASE is returning to a semblance of how things were before the financial problems, people who were in interim positions are finally going back to their regular jobs. So we were plopped into SMASE right in the middle of a lot of transitions, which has been interesting to watch, but trying on us volunteers. For a while, we were kind of floating around, being told different things by different people, and not really sure of what we were supposed to be doing. Since we are only here for a year, this was especially frustrating. Every moment counts. One thing is clear: SMASE needs us. We are certainly appreciated, which is a great feeling. I’ve been trying to help wherever I can in the office. I’ve been doing a lot of much-needed organizing. I know

that cleaning up the little things at the base of the operation will allow the bigger picture to run better. I’ve also been trying to improve employee morale. To create a sense of community and appreciation, I’ve been giving out a birthday card to each employee, signed by each department. It seems to be working; people seem pleasantly and happily surprised. Little things can make all the difference in someone’s day.To get the birthday cards signed, I have the opportunity to walk around campus to the different departments and classrooms. Being in the office, I don’t really get to see any of the students. I love going into the Day Treatment for Adults classroom. One adult student, Jason, always greets me. He runs over to me, smiling, and signs the letter “V” saying, “V for Victoria!” and shows me what he’s been working on. His smile must be contagious, because I always leave his classroom with a big one. The students here have a lot to teach us as well. They have no expectations of the day. They’re so happy, and so appreciative of everyone who helps them. SMASE is... SMASE. In order to work here, you need to realize that

it is unlike anything you will ever encounter. Once you accept this, you will find your place and be able to perform your work. You need to remember that the main priority is always the students. After all, if you need a break, you can always take a walk outside, bask in the warm Arizona sun, take a deep breath, watch a cloud’s shadow move over the landscape, and take in the beauty of the world around you. Navajo Nation is magical. Every rock, every mesa, every crevice has a story and a meaning. Man exists within the natural world, rather than trying to conquer it, which seems to have become a societal norm. There is a beautiful balance. It is so intensely spiritual. I think we can learn a lot from the Navajo people about appreciating and looking toward nature to learn about life rather than trying to figure it out all by ourselves. The Navajo are a resilient and adaptive people. After centuries of being stripped of their culture and shoved down, they still live. Their culture thrives. They are survivors. I have so much respect for them and I’m so blessed to be able to live among them and experience their culture!

The major source of revenue for Mercy Volunteer Corps comes from the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. The next largest sources of revenue come from development and investment revenue. As each year passes in our expansion plan it will be critical to continue to increase revenue as a whole while also increasing the percentage coming from development. As we continue to expand our mission of Mercy to new cities and increase the number of volunteers we will need to find creative ways to raise funds. We could not sustain or expand our mission without the support of each and every donor.

On a quiet street in the middle of Philadelphia’s center city sits a seemingly average and typical church. If you passed by every night, you probably wouldn’t know that the Church’s basement provides shelter every night to over thirty chronically homeless and vulnerable men, men who suffer from mental health problems, drug and alcohol addiction, and chronic medical concerns. You would never guess that donated frozen casseroles were baking in the oven, providing the only meal many men will be able to eat that day. You would never know the amazing guests who stay there every night, and the remarkable stories they have to tell. As a case manager in Bethesda Project’s Church Shelter Program, I do know these men, and have spent the last two months getting to know them. They are diverse in their interests and hobbies, their backgrounds, their ages and their burdens. I realized this diversity as new guests began to join the shelter, when I conducted their intakes. Each intake requires a standard set of questions regarding a new guest’s history and mental and medical health needs. The answers are as diverse as the guests, but many ask the same question at the end, “How long can I stay?”

HOW LONG CAN I STAY?BY: ELIZABETH JAHR ‘14

Every time I hear it, this question throws me off guard. When they ask, it not only questions the period of time they will be safely off the street, the deadline until they have to find another step, but the limitations on the housing. They feel out the rules of the shelter, and what the guest will have to do to stay there. My answer is always, “there is no deadline. As long as you refrain from using drugs or alcohol on site and using violence, you are welcome here for as long as it takes to find the next step.” This answer usually evokes a wave of emotion, because so many shelters have deadlines. Many require a new guest to be clean and sober, or to get medical treatment he or she simply isn’t ready for. Housing, often times, is conditional. Despite the fact that every person I serve has a shared human dignity, whether or not they “deserve” a safe place to stay is tied to stipulations. The ability of the client to meet those stipulations is irrelevant. One thing that I have learned so far this year is that mercy means that every person deserves a safe place to stay every night. No matter what someone does or is doing, they always deserve shelter. No one should ever have to wonder “How long can I stay?”

-Rachel M Campbell ’13

“I find myself considering simplicity and spirituality often in my daily life in ways that I never would have without this year of service. The time I have spent in Mercy opened my eyes to diversity and justice in ways

I have never known.”
