DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
Come celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with the Meriden Public Library on Thursday, Novem-ber 1 from 4 to 6 pm in the Griffin Room. Día de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and other parts of Latin America that honors family and friends who have died. Traditions include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using calaveras (skulls), marigolds, papel picado, (colorful cut-paper designs), the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. The holiday is not morbid, but a time of celebration and joy, filled with talk and memories of those who have passed. Our celebration includes face-painting (for the first 35 attendees), crafts for children and adults, a traditional Mexican sweet bread called pan de muerto, and fresh local cider. All are welcome to this free program.

“I cannot remember the books I’ve read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Dr. David DeRosa will be at the Library on Monday, November 5 at 6:30 pm to present the program “Gut Reaction: Natural Solutions for Normalizing Digestive Functions.”
Are you one of the 30 million people suffering with digestive prob-lems? The cost to society in terms of direct medical expenses and indirect costs associated with loss of productivity and work absentee-ism is considerable – estimates range from 21 billion or more annual-ly. The only solution seems to be medication that will only, at best, give temporary relief. There is hope! The solution lies in a few simple steps. You will learn why your current approach hasn’t helped with your digestive problems, what your pain and discomfort is really tell-ing you, and three simple ways to restore your digestive function back to normal.
All are welcome to this free program. Contact the library at (203) 630-6349 or (203) 238-2346 if you would like to reserve a seat.
FOOD FOR FINES
GUT REACTION
Meriden Public Library will hold its annual “Food for Fines” month beginning Friday, November 23, 2018 through Monday, December 31, 2018.
You may “pay” for your overdue fines by contributing one non-perishable food item for each dollar you owe in fines. For example, if you owe $3.00 in overdues, you must bring in 3 items.
Food donations do not cover lost or damaged library materials. Bring in those long overdue DVD’s cd’s, books, etc. and clear up those fines. Borrowers must
visit the Circulation Desk in person to take advantage of this opportunity. Please do not donate out-dated food items.
All food collected will be delivered to local food pantries. Food items most needed are tuna and other canned meat, dry milk, canned vegetables and fruit, rice, dry and canned beans, canned soups and stews, boxed pasta products, tomato items, juices and cereals. Contact the Library at (203) 238-2345 or (203) 630-6349 if you have questions.
