AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal From the Principal From the Principal From the Principal As we come to the end of our first semester for 2019, there are indeed many highlights for our school to celebrate, particularly those that have offered the children experiences that have further developed their learning. As I visit the classrooms, and as you will have read about on Class Blogs, our teachers have provided the children with so many wonderful learning programmes throughout this semester. There has been a solid focus on literacy and numeracy with particular focus on reading, phonics, spelling, word identification, oral language, writing and problem solving. The Literacy Pro program is making a big impact once again on children’s enthusiasm to read books and to answer the quizzes. This is most important in assisting with comprehension development. The Principal’s Challenges for all year levels have also provided the children with the motivation to improve their personal achievement in elements of literacy and numeracy, together with aspects of general knowledge. The Science Superstar Challenge has also ignited children’s inquiry into all things scientific. Thank you to all the teachers who have spent many hours planning, organising and coordinating a wide range of programmes this semester to ensure that the children at our school receive such a stimulating and enriched learning programme. The Principal’s Volunteer Reading Program is making a significant impact on the reading skills of our children. impressed at Student Council Meetings with the level of discussion and the ability of our students at all year levels to present agenda items, ask clarifying questions and to build on the ideas of others. Congratulations Student Councillors on your tremendous efforts.

We all work extremely hard to maintain this beautiful school so that the children can enjoy a clean, neat and safe school environment. As we commence holidays, I would urge any families who notice individuals within the school grounds or playgrounds to phone the School Watch number on 1800 177 777 or Education Security on 9264 4771 and report your concerns. Every year, criminal damage to schools not only costs Western Australian taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, but also inconveniences children, their families, teachers and local residents. Thank you to all the children who have worked hard to improve their learning this term and to all the parents for supporting our school during this first semester. Have a wonderful and safe holiday and we’ll see you all on Tuesday 23 July for the commencement of Semester 2.

The role you play in your children’s education is vital in helping them become happy and confident learners at school. The school holidays are a fabulous opportunity for children to continue to revise the concepts covered at school throughout the semester. The Department of Education has created a number of resources which outline activities and fun ideas to help your children learn at home. These resources cover various curriculum areas and can be found at Learning at Home. Designed for busy families with young children, each factsheet focuses on a specific learning area. Links to some of the information available are listed below. • Reading with your child is important - Pre-primary

• Science - Science at home - Pre-primary • Numbers - Number game ideas - Years 1-2

• Reading - More reading ideas - Years 1-2 • Science - Science in the garden - Years 1-2

This term, the value that we have been working on is perseverance. On the 27th of June, students from Room 29 and 26 performed an assembly that demonstrated this. They presented a variety of speeches that highlighted the perseverance and character shown by individuals - J.K. Rowling, Michael Jordan, Mr. Sherlock, Albert Einstein, Steven Jobs and Mr. Meachem. The students acted and spoke wonderfully. Both classes displayed narrative writing with the topic ‘I Can’t Do It, Yet!’ on their ‘Wow’ boards. A special thanks to all the parents for dressing their children up in great costumes. Mr Eaves, Mrs. McIlwraith and Ms Dowling.

Congratulations to these students who were presented with Merit Certificates at the Assembly:

KaviKaviKaviKavi My name is Kavi and I have been a proud student at Wattle Grove for 4 years, since 2015. I have many fellow friends and I love to cooperate with others. I came from India in 2010 and have a wonderful life. I want to make other people happy as it makes me happy. I love to play soccer with my friends as it is the greatest sport ever created and always will be. I love reading all types of books from romance to science fiction. Wattle Grove is a school that has high standards and expectations. It is challenging as the teachers always expect the best of us. There are many helpful staff at Wattle Grove Primary School too. Thanks to the P&C, Wattle Grove Primary School always has many fun events so the

students don’t get bored. As a Student Representative, I love to organise events, be a role

model, organise meetings and cooperate with other students.

TrinityTrinityTrinityTrinity My name is Trinity. I am in Year 6. I do Girls Brigade, it is only for girls as you might guess. I need a break from boys because I have three brothers. I do dancing, tap and jazz. In the future I want to be a physiotherapist. I also love to read; books absorb me in a different world. The things I like about this school I’ve liked for almost eight years; there are great gardens, lots of equipment and great teachers who help me with my education. They have even helped me understand long division. The staff is very caring. I have epilepsy and when we go to the pool members of staff go in with me to look after me in case I have a seizure. As a Student Representative I would like to be involved in a fundraiser for epilepsy. I also

enjoy helping out the younger students at school. I want to improve my leadership skills and

be more confident talking to others.

IrajIrajIrajIraj My name is Iraj and I’m a student of Wattle Grove Primary School. I’m in Year 6, Room 11 and came to Wattle Grove in 2012. My family came from Afghanistan and settled here in 2007. I have one sister who is 5 years old. I like to play soccer and I am a member of FUSC (Forrestfield United Soccer Club). Being a student of Wattle Grove, I am surprised on how clean the school grounds are and I’m especially surprised how fun the new playground is! I’m also grateful for the fact that the teachers are always giving us challenging work to do to really push us beyond our limits. Also the events are pretty fun, my favourite is Book Week where we dress up as our favourite book character. During my time as Student Representative, I wish to help the school by running meetings, and

also being a role-model to younger kids and setting them an example, so they can also learn

the rules and do the correct things. I would also like to help kids and to play with them if they

don’t have anyone to play with.

TynanTynanTynanTynan My name is Tynan Finley and I am 11 years old. I have been at Wattle Grove Primary School for seven years and this is my final year. My teachers are Mr Sherlock and Mrs Queiros. My family is mostly from Australia. I have two brothers and one sister who are all older than me. I play basketball for the Jordan’s at Ray Owen Sports Centre. I like to play hide and seek with my friends from school. I think Wattle Grove Primary School is a great becauseL • The teachers treat all the students in a fair manner. • The students give 120% in all subjects they do. • You can make new friends in your year group As a Student Representative, two goals I want to accomplish are, I want to make the students as happy as possible and offer my help to as many students as possible.

This week Kindergarten children had an exciting encounter with some

Australian Animals. Our hosts from Oz Wildlife surprised us with a koala, dingo,

a joey, snakes and lizards. The children discussed the behaviours of the

animals and how to stay safe when interacting with them. The children were

able to touch all the animals that visited us. They were very excited to get

up close to them and had some great questions to share. They were

brave, listened carefully and enjoyed a very interactive experience with

some beautiful Australian Animals. We are extremely proud of our

Kindergarten children.

On Monday, the students visited Lesmurdie Senior High School for a transition day. The students learned how to read a timetable and navigate their way around the

school. We caught up with some previous students at lunch who were able to talk to students about how quickly they settled into the school. The different groups visited

the Performing Arts Centre, the music rooms, the design and engineering rooms.

THE WORM SHED WITH ROOM 8—YEAR 5

Room 8 have been learning all about worms and their role in

sustainability. On Thursday 27th June, we were lucky enough to

have an incursion from the Worm Shed. Kevin and Sam taught us

all about worms and we even got to make our own worm farms.

The worm farms have been taken home and will be self sustainable

for a few weeks. Also Kevin and Sam helped us to fix up the worm

farms that we have at school already. Our class will be collecting

scraps for the worms at recess, keep an eye out for the buckets

in the Undercover Area.
