The Merriott Table Tennis Club is celebrating its best ever season in the Yeovil league.
The Merriott Musketeers team won pro-motion to the second division by finishing as runners-up; Rob Lock was second in the Cadet competition, while Michael Fox won the Jim Sadler Pot Luck Doubles cup, with his partner from Mosterton, Mike Tuffin. Pictured from left are Chris Ed-munds, club captain John Broomfield, Rob Lock and Michael Fox. Phil Hartley is the fourth member of the Musketeers –he was in hospital when the photo was
taken after suffering a heart attack but is making a good recovery and hopes to play next season. Vice-captain Michael Fox says their success is at least partly down to their coach Marc Walmsley. “He has made a
huge difference helping us all improve our game and becoming more competi-tive – we all owe him a big thank you.”
Marc recently started coaching sessions for under 18s on Thursdays at 6pm, and there are still spaces for any youngsters who would like to learn this fast-paced and exciting game. “Our juniors are improving fast but Marc is also great at helping complete beginners learn quickly,” says Michael.
The adult sessions continue on Sunday night, but there will be a summer break for both groups from the end of July and most of August. Michael Fox

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Written in 1939, it tells the story of the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers from Oklahoma, driven from their farm by drought, economic hardship and the repossession of their farm after de-faulting on their bank loan.
In the era of the Great Depression they are trapped in the Dust Bowl and, along with thousands of others, decide to set out west for California. Handbills describe this as a fruitful land of work and good pay. Along the way they meet other migrants, some returning with tales of poor prospects in California, but they decide they have no choice but to continue.
Reaching California they find the state overrun with migrants looking for work.
Workers are exploited with low wages and with no labour rights or unions they have no other choice but accept what-ever they can get to keep from starva-tion. The family set up camp wherever they can, losing family members to death and despair. Harried by the law and land-owners, the only kindness they meet is from other people in the same situation as themselves.
You become drawn into the plight of the Joad family, willing their old dilapidated automobile to get over the next hill, sigh-ing with relief when they find a camp with room for them and wondering at Ma Joad`s indomitable spirit that holds the family together.
After its publication the book caused outrage and was banned in many places as communist propaganda. The farmers
of California were particularly fervent in the depiction of their treatment of the migrants. Steinbeck had spent time with the migrants and saw how the treatment they received from the landowners destroyed the spirit of families such as the Joads.
The parallels of this novel with the political situation today are obvious. Migrants, who have been displaced by war or economic situations, have a simple expectation that life will be better in a new land. Just like the Joads, they find this is not always the case.
This book is not an easy read but all members of the group felt it was well worth the effort and would recommend it to anyone who has not read it.
Five Stars from us all. Merriott Book Club

Dr Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.
The film has so far grossed $307m and it garnered three Oscars this year along the way: Best Film, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Ali. ‘A supremely likeable film. Its message might seem obvious and its template overcooked, but it boasts a warm heart, with two astoundingly good lead performances to guide it home.’ Empire Magazine. Andrew Overhill

I have been over-weight all my adult life but over the last four years I had ballooned due to ill health. 3 operations in 2 years, pre-diabetic and the dreaded Menopause all con-tributed to this. Over the years I have tried every diet out there and like many I have lost a few pounds, but then put it back on and more. Every failure lead to comfort eating and with that my depression increased which in turn lead to more comfort eating… emotional eating is the worst! The menopause didn't help either with hot flushes and insomnia.
I then came across a programme that featured "Father Paul" and his weight loss journey on The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan. He inspired me so much that I found my own consultant and started on plan the next week. My amazing consultant offered me one-2-one & 24/7 support and was with me all they way.
I'm now 6 Stone lighter & 5 dress sizes down and feel amazing. I'm no longer pre-diabetic and my menopause symptoms have all but gone....my life has truly turned around. I still have a way to go but I wanted to offer the same one-2-one and 24/7 support to others so I became a Consultant in April this year. I really wanted to help others in the same situation as me and show that it can be done. I always loved looking at before and after pictures in magazines of peoples weight loss journeys wishing that one day I would have my own pictures. Well now I have and I want them to be an inspiration to others that no matter what shape or size you are or what your dream is it can be done. So I'm here ready and waiting to support you through your journey so you feel your life has truly been turned around too.
I'm here and ready to help you re-learn healthy habits and take back your control of food.

There will be 13 visiting nurseries from across the south west selling a wide range of plants from ferns and alpines to interesting salvias and lots of colourful perennials that will keep our gardens going through the summer. Raising money for CLIC Training for the
Bristol half-Marathon
I am hoping to raise funds for CLIC Sargent as my way of thanking them for the work they do and support they give
to children and young adults, going through the most difficult and painful times of their young lives, by running the Bristol half-Marathon on 15th September.
In 1976 Bob Woodward set up CLIC after his 8 year old son was diagnosed with cancer. He saw first hand how difficult it was for families to be with their child going through treatment in hospital.
In January 2018 a very close friend told me that her 20 year old daughter had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukae-mia. She was sent to the dedicated adoles-cent unit at Bristol Royal Infirmary. With the help, support and love of CLIC Sargent, The Teenage Cancer Trust, family and friends, she pushed through all the lows and highs and was finally able to go home.
If you can help me raise some money towards such a great cause then please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Penny-Harvey8. And if you see me out running the lanes of Merriott, Hinton St George, Over Stratton to Norton Sub Hamdon a supportive “hello” and wave always helps!
Thank you. Penny Harvey
