What a transformation!

The summer is flying by and the good weather is encouraging for walking along the lovely footpaths that crisscross our parish. The Footpath Group has been out and about with strimmer, loppers, shears and secateurs attempting to keep the paths clear of vegetation. We have a high number of footpaths in the parish and we try hard to keep them maintained. But we are all volunteers, giving up our own time, so it is difficult sometimes to keep on top of things but we do our best. My thanks go to everyone who helps by taking secateurs with them on their walks. It really does help if the encroaching brambles are snipped back. Thank you to everyone who get their shears and strimmers out to keep sections of paths that adjoin their properties clear. Thanks also to land-owners and farmers who keep paths that cross their land accessible to walkers.

After five years in the role of Parish Path Liaison Officer I am standing down and handing over to Nikki Rochford. You can contact Nikki on 07870 337684 or via the footpath group email address at [email protected]. I know you will give Nikki the same support that you have given me.

I should like to take this opportunity to publicly thank my team of volunteers who have supported me over the last 5 years, keeping a check on their allocated paths and joining in on working parties. They know who they are. So a big thank you to you all. My thanks also go to the Somerset CC Rights of Way team for their help and especially to Merriott PC for all the help and support they have given me, I am not going anywhere so I will still see you around and will still play a part in keeping our paths in good condition.

On behalf of Merriott Parish Council may I please thank everyone who gave up their time to help make the Fun Day at the Recreation Ground such an enjoyable day.

This year the event was held jointly with an Active learning and skills Play Day, on Saturday 27th July. We were blessed with a fine day and the event was very well attended, so our thanks to everyone who came.

There was a range of activities on offer; we had lunchtime entertainment and refreshments were available in the village hall so I hope there was some-

thing for everyone.

It would not be possible, in the space allowed, to thank everyone individually so on behalf of Councillors, can I please thank everyone who helped, whether it was making tea, offering an activity or taking part in the lunchtime displays. It is fair to say the combined efforts of every-one involved made the day a wonderful village event.

I should also thank the gentleman who volunteered to direct people to the addi-tional parking spaces provided. This gave me an opportunity to take a lunch break and enjoy the displays from Merriott

Majorettes and the Dorchester Carnival Band. I thought both were excellent and I hope they will return if we hold a Fun Day next year.

Councillors have just voted in favour of holding some sort of event to commem-orate VE Day in May 2020, so I do hope this will provide another opportunity for the village to work together on a com-bined project. If anyone would like to be involved in the planning, or has ideas of how best to mark the occasion please contact me via email at [email protected]

Somerset Education Authority Crewkerne and Ilminster Strategic School Review June 2019

The County Council has expressed serious reservations regard-ing the cost-effective maintenance of education standards in the Crewkerne and Ilminster areas. An investigation into the issues has been commissioned from the Somerset Local Educa-tion Partnership and a preliminary report has been published as the “Crewkerne & Ilminster Strategic School Review Report (Stage 0)” which presents both the financial concerns and an initial range of options for change.

The focus of the report is to describe schooling options that can both maintain educational standards and reduce the finan-cial burden of the school system in our area. Merriott Parish

Council is preparing an initial response and fully anticipates being able to represent your views as the development of more refined options for change are prepared.

The initial report is available on line and can be found by using the title “Crewkerne & Ilminster Strategic School Review Report (Stage 0)”

The Phase 1 deadline for response has passed, but Phase 2 for comments will start on 26th August 2019 or you can send your views and comments to: Dave Farrow Head of Partnerships by email at : [email protected].

Thank you.

There are three main types of bee that we see in our gardens, honey bee, solitary bee and bumble bee. Altogether there are 270 species of bee in the UK, the social honey bee being just one of these. Most honey bees are domestic, living in managed hives and so are not truly wild bees.

Most wild bee species are solitary bees, they nest individually although sometimes these individual nests are grouped together. Where female solitary bees build nests depends on the species, this may be holes in masonry, hollow stems or crevices in tree bark or in the ground. The female bee fills each hole with nectar, pollen or other food before laying one egg and sealing the hole and repeats for each egg that she lays. When the egg hatches, the larva eats the stored food and pupates not emerging as an adult flying bee until the following year.

If you have noticed neat round holes around the edge of rose leaves, you may be surprised to learn that this is the work of a leaf cutter bee who packs her nests in hollow stems with these leaf pieces.

These insects are harmless and im-portant pollinators and we can help them in our gardens by creating suit-able nesting sites. ‘Bee hotels’ are available to buy or can be made from

short hollow stems packed together horizontally. ‘Bee Bricks’ can also be bought and incorporated into new buildings, they should be positioned at least 1 metre high and facing south or south east.

It is the bumble bees that we notice most in our gardens, many species nest in small colonies in holes in the ground in banks or lawns, often making use of old voles nests. Some will build in bird nest boxes, compost heaps or under sheds, while others prefer long grass finding holes at the base of clumps or tussocks. In spring, the over-wintered bumble bee queen will look for a nest site, they can be seen flying close to the ground and feeding on early flowers. When her first workers emerge from the nest, they will take over the foraging, collecting pollen and nectar to feed the new larvae and the queen will stay in the nest laying eggs and so the colony grows over the summer until it reaches the end of it life with only new queens surviving to hibernate over winter. It is important to provide winter flowering shrubs and early spring flowers in our gardens for warm days when these bumble bees will be look-ing for food.

‘A garden for pollinators’ walk and talk with Catherine Bond at CB Plants, Lower Severalls followed by homemade lunch is on Tuesday 10th September. For booking details see www.cbplants.co.uk or telephone Mary Pring 01460 73234.

(Colonel Richmond Munn came to live in Merriott soon after the end of World War II. This article was first published in booklet form in 1961, without copyright reservation. Copies of the original book-let survive, but the small and somewhat indistinct print made reproduction for screen reading impracticable and so this version is an exact transcription.)

The village of Merriott has the reputation of being the largest in Somerset. About a thousand voters on the electoral roll attest its size. Few of them would claim for it any pre-eminence. Guidebooks mention it almost with disdain. ‘If you have time,’ says Penguin Guides, Somer-set (p. 111), ‘make a detour for Merriott, a straggling village with some good stone houses (like all the villages in this district).’ Yet Merriott is distinctive and has, in its day, 'been distinguished’ as a study of its history reveals. Merriott inhabitants (excluding the ‘foreigners’ who have settled there in increasing numbers in recent years) are in their manner customs, appearance and ex-clusiveness a race apart from their neighbours. Even their dialect has been unintelligible to other Somerset folk. They look different. They have the appearance of southern Europeans, a suggestion about them of gypsy blood. The men are handsome, dark haired, dark complexioned and hard-bitten. There is a look in their brown eyes of

self-possession and reticence. They do not talk overmuch and they gesticulate not at all. Their smile comes slowly, but when it reaches the eyes there is a gleam as when the sun breaks through to light a distant scene. Distant! Perhaps that is the key word: they seem to be looking patiently into the distance. But they are men of action, the old stock; men of the fields and the open. In their recreation they have been apt to be bold, even turbulent. Neighbouring villagers to this day speak of the wide berth it was advis-able to give Merriott after dark. It is not for nothing that it has been called ‘Little Ireland’. The public houses, and there were many of them not so long ago, could tell tales of fights, pressed some-times even to push of pitchfork.

The women are a good match for their men, as well they have had to be. Violent domestic strife seems to have been, at one time, one of the village recreations. ‘It was nothing, of a Saturday night’ says one old timer, wistfully, with a touch, perhaps of exaggeration, ‘to see all the furniture fly out of a cottage door, followed by the wife’. Quite likely the women liked it that way! A stranger today can scarcely fail to notice an air of purpose and sturdy independence of the women as they go about their business in the street. They march about their lawful occasions; there is nothing of mincing or tripping or coquetry in

their gait. There is a remarkable absence of cottage-door gossiping or house-wifely hobnobbing. But there is within their homes a natural graciousness, a kindly courtesy which is indeed reminis-cent of Ireland.

No one knows how the village earned its nickname of ‘Little Ireland’. The natives accept it with amused tolerance and all, native and neighbour alike, agree that it is not inept. There are tales that seek to account for it, of strong concentrations of Irish labour when the railway was be-ing built; there are legends of Irish monks who converted the inhabitants and founded a monastery. Its origin, it seems, must always be in doubt. The still observable fact remains that here is, though fast disappearing, a racial enclave for which there is no accounting.

The name Merriott - earlier forms were ‘Meriet’, ’Meryet', ‘Muriet’ - derives from ‘Maergeat’, meaning ‘Boundary Gate’. This in itself is suggestive of character. ‘Boundary Gate’ has about it a clanging finality. ‘Thus far but no farther,' it seems to say, ‘produce your passport’. The boundary was the line of the River Parrett along which the Saxon invaders were halted in the year 658 AD - thirteen hundred years ago.

Well September already and the children will soon be back to school, dare I say it... will soon be Christmas folks!! We already have the Christmas party booked and the bingos etc., and something different this year for New Years Eve too.

There’s me on honeymoon in Malta after my wedding celebrations in August, don’t we scrub up well, lots of compliments from guests on how “posh” it looked, and all on a shoestring budget (see photo).

Pirate Night was another great night, especially when the guys from “Lift” in Crewkerne came and joined us, along with local pirates.

Just a reminder though to everyone when going home, not just our customers, but those going home after BBQ’s etc, please be respectful to people in their homes and try and ’Keep The Noise Down’ - thank you.

August was a quiet month apart from the Rovers Fundraising Afternoon Tea in aid of Stroke Association and the return of the popular Themed Quiz Night - this time TV - in aid of Little Daffodils.

Here’s our future line up...

Why not become a member of Film-Crew? Only £25 for this season's 9 films, that under £3 a film! You can apply either at a screening, by picking up a form at the Town Hall or by looking on our website: https://crewkernefilm.wordpress.com/membership/

Only £20.00 per session.

It’s less than six weeks until I run the Bristol Half Marathon in aid of CLIC Sargent and about six weeks ago I badly sprained my ankle which put me behind with my training. I’m not as quick as I’d like to be, but these days it’s just about getting round and raising funds for an excellent cause. I’m still under my target amount but hopeful that with the continued generosity and support of family, friends and local residents I’ll get there. Any amount you can spare would be appreciated.

If you wish to donate but not via the just giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Penny-Harvey8, you can always pop an envelope through my door (Dogdole, Church Street). If you would like to know more about CLIC Sargent go to their website: www.clicsargent. org.uk. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Thank you.

The local Scout Group operates out of the Merriott Tythe Barn and consists of 16 Scouts, 22 Cubs and 24 Beavers. These young boys and girls urgently need to find additional adult support to ensure the legal requirements for adult / child ratios can be met. Not meeting these ratios means that the group cannot be run.

They are looking for a commitment of around 90 minutes on a Thursday evening (during school term time), with occasional assistance in running camp activities a couple of times each year. If you can offer your valuable time and skills to support these youngsters, they would be extremely grateful; please contact Mrs Debra Cummings to find out more, on 07966 047953. Steve Bateman
