Then, lured by the Tuna rearing pens in Gozo, an island offMalta, he travelled there to complete his mission. The result is thisluxurious 368-page book, which takes us on a journey to explore theocean, and ourselves, in a totally new way. It is an evocative and breath-taking volume that reflects the ocean as a feminine element, capturedin Arnold’s stunning images of underwater nudes. Immersed in theplayfulness and sensuality of water, the swimmers, Nika Lauriatis andPolina Barbasova, express the cycles of Woman through fluidity ofmovement: the womb’s embrace, growth, discovery, sexuality, and of course, beauty. Horst: Patterns from NatureMartin Barnes

Horst P. Horst (1906-1999) was one of the twentieth century’smaster photographers. A revered figure in the world of fashionimage making, he charted sixty years of style for Vogue and Houseand Garden, from the fashions and celebrities of the 1930s to theinteriors of the 1980s. However, little-known within his body ofwork – and contrasting intriguingly with his career in fashion – is aset of prints and a book, Patterns from Nature (1946). Working witha Rolleiflex and Graphic View Camera in New York, Monterey andMexico, Horst photographed the detailed textures and forms ofnatural objects, including plants, rocks, shells, and butterfly wings. Hisclose scrutiny of these forms makes them unfamiliar and revelatory. These images were gathered into Patterns from Nature, which alsofeatured 9 kaleidoscopic images made by arranging the photographsin simple repeat. Horst believed that these dynamic patterns wouldbe ‘immediately applicable to industrial fields such as textiles, wallpaper, carpets, plastics and glass’. Published to coincide with amajor retrospective on Horst’s work at the Victoria and AlbertMuseum, Martin Barnes re-examines these images in, Horst: Patternsfrom Nature. This new edition will make the 9 original collagedimages available for the first time in nearly 70 years and will alsoinclude a fur ther 28 photo-collages that have only recently beenrediscovered and have never before been seen or published.

• Exploring a little-known aspect of the work of Horst P. Horst, making it available for the first time in nearly 70 years

• Includes 28 collages, which have never before been published

• Published to coincide with a major retrospective of Horst’s work atthe Victoria and Albert Museum, London, entitled Horst:Photographer of Style, 6 September 2014 to 4 January 2015

MARTIN BARNES is Senior Curator of Photographs at the Victoria andAlbert Museum, London. His books, Twilight: Photography in the MagicHour and Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography were publishedby Merrell in 2006 and 2010 respectively.

Evocations of PlaceThe Photography of Edwin SmithRobert Elwall Foreword by Irena Murray

Hailed by the poet and architectural historian Sir John Betjemanas “a genius at photography”, Edwin Smith (1912–1971) was oneof Britain’s foremost photographers. At the time of his death hewas widely regarded as without peer in his sensitive renditions ofhistoric architecture and his empathetic evocations of place. Therecurrent themes of Smith’s work – a concern for the fragility ofthe environment; an acute appreciation of the need to combatcultural homogenization by safeguarding regional diversity; and aconviction that architecture should be rooted in time and place –are as pressing today as when Smith first framed them in hiselegant compositions. By providing the first in-depth survey of hiswork, this book introduces Smith’s poignant imagery to a newgeneration.

• The first major study of Smith’s work for over twenty years, andthe first to put his work into its photographic and cultural context

• Includes many rarely seen images as well as previouslyunpublished correspondence

• Written by a leading expert on architectural photography

ROBERT ELWALL was Photographs Curator at the BritishArchitectural Library, Royal Institute of British Architects, London. His acclaimed book Building with Light: The International History ofArchitectural Photography (Merrell, 2004) was shortlisted for theprestigious CICA and Banister Fletcher book awards. IRENA MURRAY is Senior Research Associate at The BritishArchitectural Library.

This paperback edition accompanies the RIBA exhibition at 66 Portland Place, London, entitled A Vanishing Past: thePhotography of Edwin Smith, 11 September 2014 to 13 December2014. The exhibition will then travel to the Mann Island Gallery in Liverpool in 2016
