Fox farmingFox farming began as early as 1919 in
the Nicola Valley at the Miller Fox Farm,owned by Issac Miller, with just a fewpairs of silver foxes (vulpes vulpes). Previ-ously a fox inspector, Miller started hisown fox farm, which soon grew to over300 foxes kept in 68 wire-enclosed pens.
In 1925, his fox, Prince won the bestadult male fox at the Vancouver FoxShow. Prince was valued at $1000 in1929. Miller also claimed the trophy for
best silver fox, male or female.In 1929, the value of the fox farming
industry in the Nicola Valley, was said tobe in the hundreds of thousands of dol-lars, with up to 1200 foxes in the area.Merritt accounted for the largest foxfarming industry this side of Winnipeg.Pelts were shipped to Europe on a regu-lar basis and fox pairs were sold acrossthe country. Breeding fox pairs were usu-ally purchased from the top breeders inPEI, and transported with great care (andexpense) to the Nicola Valley.
There were at least nine establishedfox farms in the area, although, therewere likely many more.
J.J. Gillis owned Merritt Silver FoxRanch and Gillis Fox Farm. Although hedid not operate the farms himself, he wasactive in the fox farming industry, serv-ing as the BC Director on the CanadianNational Silver Fox Breeders Associationin 1932 and 1933.
Charles W. Albrecht, known as Boband his wife, Helen (nee Graham),owned Silver Lake Fox Farm nearQuilchena for many decades. Prior toowning Silver Lake Fox Farm, theyfarmed at the Nicola Valley Silver FoxFarm (at what is now MillerEstates/Tyner Place) in Lower Nicola.
The Albrechts fox farms were not thefirst in the Nicola Valley, but they were oneof the longest running and most successfulfarms in Western Canada. Pelts producedat Silver Lake and Lower Nicola were sold
by Albrechts company London Fur SalesLtd., in London, England.
