Merritt rCMP, Central interior traffic services, BC Ambulance and Merritt Fire rescue attended. the collision occurred 15km north of town in the southbound lanes of the Co- quihalla. A 2010 Mazda 3 travelling southbound left the road, off to the left. the 30-year old male driver attempted to correct, but the vehicle was skidding sideways as it came back onto the high- way. it rolled several times back across the road and came to rest in the west ditch, facing the opposite direction. the driver suffered minor injuries, but the 27-year old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. At the re- quest of the deceased’s family, no names were released. the highway was closed for several hours to southbound traffic. the rCMP Cits and BC Coroner’s service are inves- tigating. speed and alcohol are not be- lieved to be contributing factors in the collision, however some media are report- ing the driver might have nodded off. Anyone wishing to address the bylaw can be heard in person, by a representa- tive, or by written submission, on all matters contained in the proposed bylaw. if you are unable to attend the public hearing, written submission must be re- ceived no later than 4pm Monday sept. 8th, to ensure their availability to Council at the Public Hearing. no letter, report or representation from the public will be re- ceived by Council after the conclusion of the public hearing. Errata Big outdoor grow-op last Friday, we reported on the po- lice’s confiscation of 500 marijuana plants “ranging in height to 1 3feet, from an outdoor grow op.” now, a reader pointed out to me that 13-foot tall plants could mean Merritt might start to look like a pretty great spot to pot growers, and we might finally find that fail-safe economic driver we’ve been looking for, for years i said, what do you mean? isn’t that how high those things can get? i just as- sumed, since it was in the police report... But i was wrong: when i copied-&- pasted the sentence, the hyphen between the ‘1’ and the ‘3’ disappeared mysteri- ously, as digital stuff often can. when i imagined that a 13-foot plant was worth $1000, it didn’t raise any red flags. But if 1-to-3-foot tall plants are worth that much, imagine what the economic in- flux the 13-foot ones could bring into this valley (lol)!
