On Thurs Feb. 19 at 6:30pm, MerrittRCMP attended a 2-vehicle accident 20km south of town on the Coquihalla. A1998 Crown Victoria was southboundwhen it hit the concrete medians in thecenter causing the vehicle to roll overinto the oncoming traffic and hit a north-bound vehicle. The 4 passengers in thenorthbound vehicle suffered minor in-juries, as did the driver of the Crown Vic.
But while investigating, police found 2firearms with ammunition in the vehicle de-bris: a loaded .22 cal. long revolver and a .380cal. auto pistol loaded. 29-year old JosephDiamanti of Merritt has been charged with2 counts of possession of a loaded prohib-ited/restricted firearm and was held in cus-tody to appear in court today.
Stolen vehicleAt 7am on Friday, Merritt RCMP were
called to a MVA 40km south of Merritt onthe Coq. Upon attending, ambulance andpolice were unable to locate any passen-gers of the vehicle in question. A witnesshowever, said the vehicle passed her athigh speed & the pickup hit the dirtshoulder. It went into the ditch, rollingseveral times. The witness then observeda young male wearing bright red sweat-pants, a black hoodie and backpack exitthe vehicle and take off into the bush.
The vehicle involved, a 2006 Chevpickup, had been reported stolen fromAbbottsford earlier that day. MerrittRCMP sent for Police Dog Services totrack the driver of the vehicle.
At 8:30am, a report of a male hitchhik-ing approx. 1 km north of the accidentsite was called in with the description fit-ting the suspect driver. RCMP Memberslocated 21-year old Jamie Michael Stew-art of Cranbrook & Calgary. He wascharged with possession of stolen prop-erty over $5000, and had 2 outstandingwarrants for his arrest from Invermerefor possession of stolen property & fail-ing to attend court. Stewart was taken tothe NVGH where he was treated for in-juries to his knee, then released to policecustody for appearance.
