Fire season heats upFriday, crews from the Kamloops
Fire Centre responded to a wildfire nearPimainus Creek, 21km southwest ofLogan Lake, which was reported short-ly after 12noon. By mid-afternoon, ithad grown to approx. 15 hectares andwas burning in a cut block area that isheavily forested. And smoke colouredthe skies above Merritt at sunset.
Fire officials mobilized 52 firefighters,3 helicopters and 2 pieces of heavyequipment, with 4 airtankers droppingfire retardant around the fires perimeterto slow its spread and assist crews on the
ground. No structures were threatened.The cause of this fire is suspected to
be caused by human activity. And theMinistry is reminding the public thatthe fire danger rating is moderate tohigh across most of the Kamloops FireCentre, which means all activity in theforest must be carried out with caution.
New medical train-ing program for NVIT
Last week, the Province announced$322,400 for NVIT and VancouverCommunity College (VCC) to train 38Aboriginal health care and medicaloffice assistants. This one-time fundingwill support a new medical office assis-tant program at NVIT and expand thedelivery of the health care assistant pro-gram at VCC in 2010-11. Both programswill be delivered in the LowerMainland, and NVIT is partnering withVCC on the delivery of the medicaloffice assistant program. VCC will offercurriculum support to NVIT and assis-tance for student clinical placementswithin Vancouver medical offices.
