Courtney Thu and Kyle Cook announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. Wild Rose Entertainment officially breaks ground on its $35.4 million casino and hotel resort this Friday. Roy and Gerda Luhman and Kathy Beschorner lead the other survivors for the first lap around courthouse square in Emmetsburg during the annual Relay for Life. Despite the rainy weather there were several people on hand to witness the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new swimming pool. Mike Flaherty won the opportunity to be the first one down the water slide. Twenty-five years ago June 7, 1995: President of the Boys and Girls Home was hand at the Hillcrest to answer questions and try to clear up some concerns voiced in the community. From 100 years ago-Saturday while Steve Gaerdett was driving over the Osgood bridge over the Des Moines river, had the misfortune to have one of his horses break through the bridge but no serious damage was done. The bride is said to be in bad shape and the proper authorities should look after it at once. The new Graettinger library slated for summer construction will provide many benefits for the community. It will almost triple the area of the old library and will be located in the empty lot on Robins Avenue. In the days of the old wooden schoolhouse, the library was located in the cloakroom of the principal’s office. In 1939 it was moved out the cloakroom into a more spacious area as part of the city government building. Forty Nine Years Ago June 17, 1971 Mrs. Mary Margaret Skattebo, fifth grade teacher in Graettinger, has met the requirements for admission to the International summer School at the University of Oslo, Norway. Linda Kaye Clipperton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Clipperton, has announced the approaching marriage to Lynn Tindall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Tindall. Pamela Robinson, GHS graduate, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Robinson, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Teachers Education and graduated with honors from the University of South Dakota. The Mite baseball players are sporting new suits which were purchased this year for them by the Graettinger American Legion. Last year the Legion purchased suits for the Midget team and the year before for the PeeWee team. Diamond Jubilee headquarters are scheduled to be open in the front portion of Sedlock’s furniture store. Ladies are encouraged to wear old fashioned dresses and bonnets to help promote the celebration. The Graettinger swimming pool was closed for a few days because of a burned out electric motor on the water circulator. A new motor was ordered but delayed. Cultivating bee was held for Marvin Moran as Marvin recently underwent surgery. He is recuperating and expected back home soon. Dairy Day will be observed in Palo Alto County and in Graettinger the observance will include a visit by State Dairy Princess, Emily Lyon. Well, at least to start the week. Recently I have been spending the sunny days cleaning and painting parking lines in park- ing lots. What is hotter than work- ing on a black surface in direct sun? It is so hot; no shirt, no pants, no problem. We wanted summer, and we got it. Although mid-week here they are saying much cooler with some shower storms. I play in the low 80's. If it's any hotter than that, I won't play. I finally got my head together, now my body is falling apart. Re- member when you were about 20 or 25 – you could do anything. There was no fear! Jump off a bridge to the river below; go canoeing in flooding river waters; take a dirt bike into the county gravel pit – and so on. Growing old is manda- tory – growing up is optional. I’m still a kid at heart; sure you remem- ber, that kid that ‘been there – done that stupid.’ When I’m finally hold- ing all the cards, why does every- body decide to play chess. If you think nobody cares if you’re alive, try missing a couple of pay- ments. The telephone is a good way to talk to people without having to offer them a drink. Remember party lines? If you do, you might even be older than me – and I won’t go there. I remember we had 9 farm families on our party line. Our ring was a ‘one ringer.’ The neighbor to the north was a ‘two ringer.’ That made it easy to listen in on their conversations. Otherwise for the other 7 families you just picked up the phone and ‘by chanced it.’ Of course, you could al- ways tell when someone was listen- ing; you would hear the click when they picked up and new they were listening until you heard the click of them putting the phone back down. Me and my neighbor pal Mike had a system in place. When we heard the ‘click’ if they didn’t hang back up, we put our plan in motion! We had one in everyone’s partyline family sneaking behind the backs and see- ing another one in a partyline fam- ily at the Little Muddy Creek bend. Well it caught up to us, and yes, I know what a tanned butt feels like.
