It’s worth delv-ing into the site timcookware.com even if you’re not in a buying mood. The product descriptions are very “Apple-esque”.

Note: Tim Cookware is not in any way connected to Apple Inc. and Tim Cook hasn’t made any comments about these products.

My Gift to You —In the August 2018 issue of MUGTALK, I spoke about the Paprika Recipe Manager 3 app. (My article appears on page 2 in the issue.) I have the app on my computer, phone, and iPad. I now have a total of 217 recipes, all categorized and rated. I highly recommend the app if you enjoy cooking and have a large collection of recipes.

My Christmas gift to you is one of the easiest and most delicious apple pie recipes made in a cast iron pan. You’ll be able to use your new Tim Cookware! The recipe is as it appears in my Paprika 3 app.

Here’s another take on Apple’s Think Different campaign. I thought it was a spoof when I first read about this in an article in October, but it appears that you actually can purchase Tim Cookware from timcookware.com. The site looks legitimate although I haven’t tried buy-ing anything. If you decide to

buy one of the products in this cooking line as a Christmas gift, please bring the product to our next meeting for a show-and-tell session.

Tim Cookware is divided into three collec-tions: 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. The items

include a spoon-spatula combo tool, a rolling pin, a chopping board, a chef’s hat ($25), and a customizable Tim Cookbook for recording your

old family recipes. There’s even a Mac Pro designed cheese grater that sells for $50.

You can buy the “11” collection consisting of the wooden spoon and spatula for $29. The 11 Pro adds a cutting board and a rolling pin for

$69. The 11 Pro Max pictured above the cheese grater photo adds the Tim Cookbook for $89.

Cinnamon Whipped Cream:2 cups whipping cream, chilled1 teaspoon ground cinnamon4 tablespoons sugarDIRECTIONSFor the skillet apple pie: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Melt the butter in a 9-inch cast-iron skillet; set aside 1 tablespoon of the melted butter for the top crust. To the melted butter, add the brown sugar and melt them together on medium heat, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and line the skillet with one of the pie crusts. Pour the apple pie filling over the crust and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the cinnamon sugar. Use the second pie crust to cover the filling. Brush the top with the reserved melted butter, then evenly sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar on top. Cut vents in the middle of the pie. Bake for 30 minutes. Serve hot, topped with a generous dollop of cinnamon whipped cream. For the cinnamon whipped cream: Chill a large metal mixing bowl and a wire beater at-tachment in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Pour the cream, cinnamon, and sugar into the cold mixing bowl and beat until soft peaks form, 2 to 3 minutes; the mixture should hold its shape when dropped from a spoon. Don’t overbeat or you’ll have sweetened butter! aNOTE – This pie is so good that you don’t even need to make the whip- ped cream! I prefer the pie as is.Have a wonderful holiday season!

Tip 1– Create Mailing Labels with the Contacts AppWe all need to create mailing labels from time-to-time, especially when heading into the holi-day season. Avery Labels has a wide variety of label options, but most of the templates needed to create the labels are in MS Word format. If you want to use Apple Pages to create your labels you must download a template and im-port it into the Pages program. Once loaded you should save it as a Pages template for future use (File > Save As Template). You can also use LibreOffice to create your labels. Like Pages, you must open the template file and then save it as a template for future use. (File > Templates > Save as Template). But there is a better way. Instead of opening a blank template and typing each address manu-ally, use the Contacts app on your Mac.Assumptions: 1 You have all the address information en tered in the Contacts app. 2 You have created a Group in Contacts containing the people you want for the labels. Now, if you want to create labels for your Christ-mas cards, open Contacts, click the name of the group (i.e. Xmas), and select everyone in that list (CMD + A). Insert your label sheet into the printer and select File > Print. I usually use the Avery 5160 template which gives you 30 labels on a page. You can get these sheets in white, or as trans-parent labels which look good on light-colored envelopes. Make sure you have “Show Details” enabled in the print menu. Select Style = Mailing Labels and click the Layout button. Use the drop-down

menus to enter the Avery Standard template number. Here is an example that uses the Avery 5160 template. Tip: Print a test sheet on plain paper to avoid wasting label stickers.

At this stage, you have two choices. (1) You can send the information directly to your printer, or (2) you can save it to a PDF file with the filled-out labels so that you can reuse it.The downside to creating your labels from Contacts is that you can’t change the font or add small images to the labels. For this, you will have to use Pages or LibreOffice and enter the data manually.Tip 2– Create an Email Christmas Card Using PagesIf you are an Apple Mail user you have probably noticed an option on the toolbar to “Show Sta-

tionary”. If you have been adventurous, you may have even tried it. If so, you will have noticed a few pre-built templates that have a picture, back-ground decorations, and space for your text.

But, if you are like me, none of these templates are really what you want so you start looking for ways to create your own. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t make it easy. Here is how to create an Email card using Pages.

Create the Card 1 Find an image you want to use for your Christ-mas card. 2 Open a blank docu-ment in Pages. Choose the Blank Landscape template. 3 Add a rectangle shape and adjust it to fill the page. You will want to change the background color later to complement the colors in your image.

4 Paste your image into the blank document. Select the background rectangle and use the style format box to change the color. I used a gradient that picked up the image colors. You can also select the image and use the style for-mat to add a shadow. 5 Add a text box to contain your greeting. Move the box around to where you want it and use the format tools to change the font, font color, and font size as needed. Add a second text box to contain your signature (or closing mes-sage).— Please go to page 10 for the conclusion

Poor air quality in your home can stink up the joint or exacerbate allergies – and it can be hard to tell at a glance when its a prob-lem. But, HomeKit peripherals can keep your home’s air clean with minimal aggravation, and it won’t cost as much as you think.

In my home that hosts two dogs, two rabbits, and a cat, maintaining air qual-ity is crucial to stop-ping both allergies, to say nothing of the smell. Compound all this with exterior air quality issues, and things can get out of control, quickly. Having an air pu-rifier that kicks on in

the kitchen while cooking can also be a lifesaver -- especially in an apartment with temperamen-tal smoke detectors. (Blue Pure 211+ air purifier shown above.) An ideal solution would be to utilize a Home-Kit-enabled air purifier. This would be a single device that could monitor air quality, automate itself, as well as respond to other automation rules and triggers from the Home app. It would also respond to Siri commands. Unfortunately, as can be gleaned from the list of HomeKit accessories on Apple’s site, the num-ber of HomeKit-certified purifiers is quite limited. We are going to walk through turning a “dumb” purifier into a smart purifier, and how to automate it using HomeKit to live a healthier life in your home.

Getting startedWe are going to walk through a few different levels of automation. From the bare essentials to the more intelligent. To get things going, you will need a minimum of a basic air purifier and a HomeKit smart plug. When looking for your own, you want a two-stage filter and a larger pre-filter that takes out the bigger stuff like pet hair. Also a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter for the smaller particles like tobacco smoke, pet dander, and the like. We did a lot of research into air purifiers and chose the Blue Pure 211+ for a multitude of reasons. It looks great and has a modern, unas-suming design. It also has replaceable exterior covers that can be washed and come in a variety of colors. It is easy to use and puts all of its efforts into cleaning and removing odors from the air rather than half-baked “smart” technology. This makes it ideally suited for our own needs. We’ve been running the Blue Pure 211+ for quite a while now and find it to be amazingly effective and key to keeping our home clean and good-smelling. For a smart plug, we use the iDevices Switch. We like this because it is easy to use, monitors electricity consumption, works over Wi-Fi, and has a colorful nightlight that can also be con-trolled via HomeKit.

We love the iDevices Switch with a HomeKit nightlight

By connecting the Blue Pure 211+ to the Switch, you can easily toggle

Simple automation

Once the purifier can be effec- tively controlled from HomeKit, the next step is to add some automation and reduce the de- pendence on manual control. There are multiple ways to do this, including based on when you come back from work at a certain hour, or leave based on geo- fencing. The purifier will kick on whenever the last person leaves— see graphic at below right.

We’d recommend that you turn the purifier on whenever the last person leaves the home and turns off when the first person arrives, to keep it running regularly. Alternatively, the purifier could run at night while you’re in bed. If the purifier is in a com- mon room, at night you likely won’t be in that room and it can run freely without making too much noise to disrupt your sleep. To do this, perhaps include in a “good night” scene, so that Siri turns off the lights, closes blinds, shuts the garage door, adjusts the thermostat, —go to page 5

Can’t Boot Correctly— Thanks to Dick Frank of the South Marion Citizen

In Vermont during the winter a teacher was help-ing one of her kindergarten students to put on his boots. He asked for help and she could see why. With her pulling and him pushing, the boots still didn’t want to go on. Finally, when the second boot was on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost whimpered when the little boy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.” She looked and sure enough they were. It wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet. He then announced, “These aren’t my boots.” She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, “Why didn’t you say so?” like she wanted to. Once again she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off. He then said, “They’re my brother’s boots. My Mom made me wear them.” She didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. She mustered up the grace to wrestle the boots on his feet again. She said, “Now, where are your mittens?” He said, “I stuffed them in the toes of my boots.”

40 Newspaper Headlines That Push The Limits Of Human Stupidity— Thanks to demilked.com newsletter post

Creating a good headline for an article is an art within itself. Just think about it: you basically have to describe your whole text using just one sentence. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don’t, and sometimes you produce such a mind-bogglingly dumb headline that people still remember it 20 years later. Much like dumb celebrity quotes, stupid news-paper headlines are never truly forgotten. Unfor-tunate wordplay, lazy editing and poor math – it takes some creativity to come up with headlines like that. Here is a sample below. View them all in this gallery link! Warning– some “racy” copy!

locks the door and turns on the purifier.Advanced automationBeyond basic automa- tion, the purifier can be controlled re-actively based on the air quality in the room by being coupled with a HomeKit air quality monitor. There are several HomeKit air quality monitors out there – we’d recom- mend the Eve Room 2 or even the OneLink Safe & Sound.Right– Trigger the purifier based on air quality

An automation rule can be configured that whenever the air qual- ity in the room drops below a certain threshold, the purifier kicks in. This has the highest level of financial investment, but it is the most hands-off and can keep your air at whichever level you prefer.Home clean home It is unfortunate that there aren’t many HomeKit purifiers out there, and while an aftermarket plug and monitor solution isn’t as easy as an out of box solution, it is certainly effective. Going this route has its own benefits however, including monitoring the energy usage of the purifier, a handy nightlight that could be enabled based on a motion sensor, and Siri control for otherwise “dumb” but extremely capable puri-fiers. The Eve Room also has a display and other perks over an integrated air quality monitor, further justifying the investment. a

In prep for this issue I sent an email to several members asking them to check their photo stash for seasonal photos that say “December” or “Christmas,” that I could use for MUGTALK. Each had to have some Apple heritage such as being shot with an iPhone, being processed on a Mac, you get the pic-ture. The results are a pleasing mix of traditional family moments, ceramic keepsakes, the beauty of a Christmas tree, glittering ornaments, a curious kitty, and to the offbeat charm of a mini-barn in the season’s first snow.

Legend—• Shot on iPhone, “Ornaments through the years,” from the collection of John & Marilyn Kennedy. Shown are Golfing Santa, Golfing Snowman, a Christmas ball from Germany and a Cowboy hat given to golfer Marilyn when she & John were making the move from the north to their Florida mini-ranch.• Chris Kilbride chose a ceramic sleigh that her Mother made years ago arranged with a Christmas plate. On the plate her husband

“(professional jazz) drummer,” and her father (99 years old) are represented as Nutcrack-ers. Chris shot this set-up with her iPhone 8 Plus in Portrait mode, then added a text greeting, making a beautiful Christmas card.• N.C. Sizemore shot a heartwarming photo of his Great Grandson Zeke opening one of his first Christmas presents with Zeke’s Grandma and Grandpa proudly looking on. NC processed the shot with Adobe Elements 15 on his MacBook Pro adjusting crop, levels, contrast, and sharpening.

• Adele Bongiovanni captured a great shot of her Christmas tree and, when visiting Clinton Corners, NY, caught a mini-barn with a dusting of that cold white stuff. She processed the two shots on her iMac in Apple Photos.• Last but not least, Lorraine Wieskamp, with family, was enjoying her Christmas dinner Al Sypher when a “rustling” sound alerted her to a climbing Felix in the branches of the Christmas tree. What an opportunity for the camera at hand— grab the iPhone quick.

CleanMyMac X allows you to create an ignore list for the following modules: System Junk, Photo Junk, Mail Attachments, iTunes Junk, Mal-ware Removal, Updater, Large & Old Files, and Uninstaller. To add items to the ignore list, do these:1. Switch to a module that supports the Ignore List functionality.2. Control-click an item you want to hide from the scan results and choose Add to Ignore List. To make your items visible in the scan results, open CleanMyMac X Preferences and remove corresponding items from the Ignore List tab.Protection against malwareStarting from the X version, CleanMyMac has learned to detect and dispose of potentially harmful items like viruses, malware, spyware,

and miners. It has got both a malware scanner and a real-time monitor that verifies new instal-lations even when CleanMyMac is off. The malware scanner works either as a stand-alone Malware Removal module or as part of Smart Scan. It includes mostly open-source libraries, but MacPaw keeps on updating it with new entries at least every two weeks. If you still have some questions regarding security and reliability of CleanMyMac X, please contact the MacPaw Customer Support Center. The staff will do their best to provide you with the detailed explanations. a

Cleanup and maintenance of your Mac are quite sensitive processes that require excep-tional accuracy and reliability of the soft-ware. If you allow your cleaning application to decide on your system and user data, you must be sure it’s treated wisely and carefully. And that’s exactly what CleanMyMac X does.

Safety DatabaseYears of experience allowed MacPaw to create a reliable Safety Database that contains a long list of rules and exceptions for all cleanup occasions. It takes into account peculiarities of the current operating system and provides instructions on certain apps. The database is constantly extend-ed with new items and rules to prevent cleaning mishaps and keep all your data intact.Smart Scan and Smart SelectionSmart Scan is a core tool of CleanMyMac X that incorporates 7 essential modules and starts the Cleanup, Protection, and Speed scanners. They use intelligent algorithms and Safety Database to filter out unneeded, outdated, and possibly dangerous items that you can safely remove. If you use CleanMyMac modules separately, the amount of items that can be painlessly erased is marked as smart-selected on a sum-mary screen: By default, CleanMyMac X offers to remove only automatically generated data related to system and app processes. None of your personal files is gone unless you want it.

Ignore ListCleanMyMac X continues updating its Safety Da-tabase and gets smarter with every new version. However, there might be something it doesn’t know about your preferences. For example, you may want to ignore certain files or logs in clean-ing modules, or you may need to hide some apps from the Updater module.

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro is packed with new features — many that go under the radar. AppleInsider goes hands on with all of the best new features for pro and non-pro users alike.

Massive storage— For the first time, a portable Mac can be configured with up to an 8TB SSD. While your average bear may not need that level of internal storage, professional photo and video editors are going to be relieved. No longer do content creators need to lug around external drives for daily storage when a huge amount of work can be carried on the go. Add in the speed of Thunderbolt 3 and it is easy to, and conve-

nient to, move that amount of storage around.Display— Of course, every-one knows by now that Ap-ple has updated the display from the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro to create the 16-inch MacBook Pro. When we were using the machine, the

small amount of additional real estate didn’t make a sizable impact on our usage, but that doesn’t mean the big picture wasn’t vastly improved. We didn’t just gain an additional 0.6 inches of diagonal screen, but we also got slimmer bezels as well for a more modern look. The previous Mac-Book Pro line was looking dated with the chunky bezels, and Apple has taken more advantage of the case size this time around. To do this, Apple did have to increase the size of the MacBook Pro slightly, but we didn’t notice the differences at all until we had the machines in-hand next to one another. Only then did we see the slightly larger body and notice a bit more heft. Video producers will also particularly like that the new 16-inch display also has a user-selectable refresh rate option that we haven’t seen on MacBooks before.Speakers— Everyone is going to benefit from the new audio prowess Apple has been showing as of late. Powerbeats Pro brought great audio to the

A Primary How To

by appleinsider.com, Andrew O’Hara— edited

Beats line, Beats Solo Pro took that even further and added new active noise cancellation, and AirPods Pro blew users away with its powerful bass and fantastic sound. Now that newfound audio skill is coming to the MacBook Pro. We were happy with the MacBook Pro’s previous speakers but were wholly surprised with the sound from the updated Pro. They sound phenomenal whether you are a pro editing your latest Logic Pro X project, scoring your next movie, or an average user tuning in to the latest episode of For All Mankind on Apple TV+.RAM— Apple starts the 16-inch MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM — same as the previous mid-2019 15-inch — but now that RAM is a faster 2666MHz. Faster RAM will increase performance as a whole for everyday users, but pros will most benefit from the increased maximum capacity of 64GB. That means more instruments in Logic, more tabs in Safari, and more layers in Photoshop with-out the accompanying performance hit.Graphics— Anyone who relies heavily on graph-ics will appreciate Apple’s move to the 5000-series AMD Radeon Pro graphics cards. The base model now has twice the graphics performance as the previous-gen base model. Furthermore, video editors will love the option of having up to 8GB of GDDR6 of configurable memory on the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M.96W Charger— To power up Apple’s latest machine, included is a more powerful 96W USB-C power brick. This helps charge the Mac as fast as possible, and as USB-C becomes more ubiquitous, it can be used to charge any other compatible devices as well.Keyboard— Much has already been said on the new MacBook Pro — including at AppleInsider when we compared it directly to the previous generation model. But the short version of it is — for most users, Apple has improved the keyboard. It requires a bit more pressure to depress each key, but it overall feels solid, quiet, and with a bit more key travel

than the previous generation. It should also prove to be more reliable which is likely what most users will care about.Battery life— MacBook Pro is designed to be por-table — not forever tethered to a desk. That’s what makes aspects such as battery life so important. As the machine consumes more power, the battery needs to be optimized in turn. With the updated machine, Apple has not only packed in a new 100-Wh lithium-polymer battery, but boosted the performance of the machine to yield an additional hour of usage time for average web browsing. Users who fit that criteria will notice the biggest benefits but pros editing on the go should also see improvements in battery for their workflows as well.Cooling system— Even though Apple uses the same processors as the mid-2019 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple was able to increase performance by optimizing the cooling system. Thanks to a larger heat sink and updated fans, we are easily seeing longer sustained max speeds on the Intel proces-sors, and even gains on tests such as Geekbench 5. It’s incredible that Apple can get this much more performance out of a machine just by tweak-ing the thermal design.Impressive microphones— Lastly, we have new microphones. The new three-microphone array has made a huge impact to the audio fidelity of MacBook-made recordings. It’s hard to describe and maybe best to hear for yourself. Saying we were impressed may be an understatement. Not everyone uses the microphones, but podcasters, musicians, and even video producers such as AppleInsider will love to have these mics onboard. They may not always be the primary go-to, but for while recording on the road or as a backup, these will come in handy. a

Apple will ship at least 20 million iPhone SE 2 units in 2020, following the device’s expected launch in the first half of the year. An optimistic situation, says Kuo, is 30 million units. It’s going to look more like an iPhone 8 than an iPhone SE with a 4.7-inch display. It will feature an A13 chip, 3GB RAM, and a low $399 price point. Highlights from OMUG’s 11/13/19 Meeting

Announcements: Marilyn Kennedy welcomed 27 members, and noted a new long distance member Kathleen Lemieux from Stuart, FL. Secretary’s Report: Minutes for the October meeting were approved as published via the OMUG Forum.Program: macOS Catalina – Presenter Doug Sebring, OMUG. Overall, the Catalina OS is not all that different on the surface from previous OS versions except for the fact that 32 bit applications won’t work. 64 bit apps are now required by Catalina. Catalina’s feature set has incorporated many favorite iOS features. The familiar iTunes is now two separate podcasts, music & AppleTV apps. You can control your computer by voice commands. The Photos app will curate your photos, creating galleries searchable by day-month-year, make a slideshow with music, etc. Screen-Time and many games now function across all Apple devices. Security and Privacy are improved including when installing new software. After break: Phil Davis presented a Tech Help and Q&A session covering a wide range of tips including the following, and more—

• Before you upgrade macOS, Go64 free app scanner program finds all 32 bit apps• How to change system font size• Phil’s familiar online Tech Help has been moved to a new location, tech42.us• How to: install Catalina on old computers (at your own risk); open unapproved appsHis presentation notes are posted on the OMUG website.Door Prizes: •Amazon $25 gift cards – Cammie Fairburn and Ron Smith • 16 GB flash drive w/ eBook Take Control of Calendar & Reminders v. 2.1 – Bob McRae •16 GB flash drive w/ eBook Take Control of Notes v 1.3 – Larry Buzzard Thank you to Lorraine and Don who provided refreshments.
