The Last Days of Advent Most of us have these days of December filled with all kinds of activity and maybe some of us are already worn out. I have even heard a few people say over the years, “I can’t wait until Christmas is over, and we can get back to normal.” In a way, that is a sad commentary on how secular celebrations of Christmas (including the shopping, card writing, etc.) can really zap our energy and make us feel empty and frustrated. The last days of Advent may be busier than ever for many of us, therefore making it more difficult to carry out final preparations for our spiritual side to welcome Jesus into our world and lives. As my own life has become busier over the years with more responsibilities, I have found one consoling thought to be of great help. If everything is not done by Christmas Day, I do not get too upset. Our society may say that Christmas is pretty much over by December 26. Our Church, however, says that our Christmas celebration ends on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is on Sunday January 10, 2021. It is still acceptable to send or receive a Christmas greeting anytime in that period. In fact, many people appreciate some Christmas celebration after the day itself, since they have a little more time to appreciate all that this season is about. It is still acceptable to give a gift to someone we care about, even if it is after Christmas Day. The spirit of Christmas knows no time limitations. The spirit that brings us to loving others is one that is to last every day of the year. When December 26th finally arrives, let us remember that we are still celebrating the birth of the One who came as one of us and continues to make His presence known to us: Jesus Christ. On behalf of the parish staff, I would like to wish each and every one of you a very Blessed and Merry Christmas! May this time of year be for all of you, a time of peace, grace and joy. The Christ Child came into the world once and will come again as King and Savior. Let us rejoice in knowing that Jesus continues to be with His people…always loving, forgiving and caring about each and every one of us! Father David

O Come, O Come Emmanuel
The obligation for participation in Sunday and Holy Day Masses remains dispensed. With our limited amount of reopening volunteers, we are able to offer two indoor Masses with restricted capacity of 77 on Christmas Eve*. We will offer one Parking Lot Mass on Christmas Eve and Day each to accommodate more parishioners. Mass will also be accessible on YouTube. Those who are not feeling well or who are in a high-risk category should remain at home and take advantage of the on-line celebration of Christmas Mass.
*Please read the following two pages in entirety to understand the pre-registration requirements for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, indoor Masses and directions for participation in the Parking Lot Masses.

—Attending Indoor Mass on Christmas Eve—
Due to COVID restrictions, it is necessary to register in advance for the indoor Masses we are hosting on Christmas Eve at 6 P.M. and 10:30 P.M. Entry will only be available to those who have registered and secured a seat in advance. We are unable to accept anyone without a confirmed reservation. The doors of the Church will open 20 minutes prior to the start of Mass and will be locked when Mass begins. It has come to our attention that as of 1:30 P.M. on Friday, December 18th, we only have a couple of seats available for the 10:30 P.M. Mass on Christmas Eve through Phone-In Registration only. Since our limited capacity for indoor Masses filled up so quickly, we would like to offer another option to those who were unable to get a reservation.
• We invite you to park your car in an available spot in the parking lot during the 6 P.M. and 10:30 P.M. Masses on Christmas Eve and listen to the transmission of our celebrations in your car on the radio by tuning into 106.9.
• After serving Communion inside the church, Fr. David and Deacon Mike will distribute
Eucharist outside of the church at Door 12 in the front of church and at Door 11 on the Ministry Center side. Those who want to receive Communion should remain in their cars until Father makes the announcement to leave your car and then move on foot to where Father and Deacon Mike will be stationed.
• Please maintain social distancing in line for communion and remove any gloves. Shortly
before you receive, there will be an usher to spray your hands with hand sanitizer. Please keep your mask on until after you receive. Once you’ve moved away from in front of Father or Deacon you may take down your mask to receive the host. Please plan on dressing for weather conditions, with sturdy footwear.
• At these two Masses on Christmas Eve at 6 P.M. and 10:30 P.M., Communion will not be
brought to any individual cars. • If you have mobility issues, please plan on attending one of our parking lot Masses at 3 P.M. on Christmas Eve and at 9:00 A.M. on Christmas Day when ministers will bring Communion directly to your car.
•

We Invite You to Participate in Weekend Masses Online at St. James the Apostle
Thank you to all those parishioners who continue to participate in our online Sunday Masses. We are committed to continue filming and making available weekend Masses. Stay tuned to your regular Flocknotes from the parish for the weekly link or just check our website stjamesge.org on Saturdays for the link to the latest Mass which will be found in the headers. You may also subscribe to our YouTube Channel, St. James the Apostle Glen Ellyn.
A big thank you to parishioner Phil Mueller of Mueller Production Services, whose generous donation of many hours of time and talent have made it possible for us to continue this ministry. (www.muellerproductionservices.com)
Oplatki Now Available for Pickup at the Ministry Center
Christmas wafers, or oplatki, are now available for pickup at the Ministry Center. A $2 offering would be most appreciated. The custom of breaking a piece of wafer and sharing it with others at the Christmas dinner originated in Eastern Europe and has spread to many places in the world. You may wish to designate a family member to begin with a prayer before distributing the wafers.
Thank You to Our Reopening Volunteers!
As we wrap up 2020, we want to acknowledge the fact that since our reopening, none of our Masses, Confessions, Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals, First Communions, First Reconciliations or any other sacramental event could have happened without the assistance of our St. James Parishioners who have stepped forward to serve as members of our St. James Reopening Team. It takes a village to open the doors of a church for worship and sacrament safely in the middle of a global pandemic and these wonderful men and woman keep coming, day after day, week after week to make it happen!
So if you see one of them when you come to church, please be sure to thank them for their sacrifice and love for their fellow parishioners.
And if you want to become a member of this AMAZING team, we would love to have you! Email [email protected] if you want to get involved.
