MLHS Christmas Concert Invitation The Manitowoc Lutheran High School Christmas Concert at the Capitol Civic Centre will be held on Wednesday, December 23rd at 4:30 and 7:30pm. All students in Kindergarten through 8th grades are invited to join the MLHS choirs on the last anthem of the concert. The students are all invited to sing the refrain of Go Tell It On The Mountain. Since this is the 60th year of MLHS we will also be inviting alumni to take part in this closing anthem. Can you imagine the joy that will be brought to those in attendance to hear voices from age 5 – 75 proclaim “Jesus Christ is born!” In addition we are planning with current students and alumni to play the instrumental parts from the side balconies so that we can fit all of the singers on stage. This should be a very special performance for all involved! Please mark this on your calendar and join the Lancer family at the CCC!

Winter Dress The cold winter weather is now upon us. Please remember that the students should dress

appropriately for the weather.

Students go outside for recess if the temperature is 5 degrees or more above zero. We follow the actual temperatures and not the wind chill readings. (The wind chill can be a factor in extreme cases.)

All students need to wear winter hats, coats, and mittens or gloves. When there is snow and ice on the ground, all students need to wear winter boots.

This includes grades 7 and 8. Old shoes or a second pair of shoes cannot substitute for boots.

If your son or daughter does not own a pair of winter boots, please get a pair of boots for your child as soon as possible. If you have any questions about how we do things for the winter months, please stop by and share your questions or concerns.

Parenting Bible Class

Please join us on Sunday, December 20th at 9:00 am for the next Bible class in our Parenting Bible Class series, “A Recipe for a Happy Family – Priorities.”

Christmas Eve Practice

This year’s rotation (child’s last name):

A – K…..4:00 PM service (Practice- Monday, December 21st 3:15-4:30)

L– Z…..6:00 PM service (Practice- Tuesday, December 22nd 3:15-4:30)

Please make sure that your family and friends are aware of this breakdown, as the Christmas Eve service times listed in the newspaper were incorrect.

Medical Consent Form

If you have a prescription medication for your child that is stored in the school office, we have a form in the office for you to complete and sign. We are always updating our forms due to new information that comes to us regarding safety regulations.

Classroom News Kindergarten - Mrs. Klatt

Next week we will be finishing up some Christmas projects and learning our recitation and Christmas songs! The class has been doing an awesome job at focusing during rehearsals! Because of some extra Christmas projects, Christmas Eve rehearsals, and singing at the nursery home, we are running behind in Writing Workshop, ELA, and Math! We will finish up what I had planned this last week on Monday and Tuesday! Wednesday will be our Christmas party! If anyone is interested in bringing snacks or drinks, please let me know! Have a great weekend!

Grade 1 – Mrs. Plocher

A reminder that the Christmas party will be Wednesday, December 23rd. Please remember to bring gifts and items for the party. We begin using hymnals in January. Some of you ordered a hymnal at the beginning of the year. I have those hymnals here at school. If you did not order a hymnal, please send one to school, or you can go to the school office to purchase one. Merry Christmas and enjoy the holiday break!

Grade 2 – Mrs. Hauf We’ve been studying goods and services in social

studies class. Next Monday, we are having a trading day of goods. Each child should bring five or six things they no longer want to keep and bring them to school to trade with a classmate. Some things might be stuffed animals, small cars, dolls, or other things they think the other children may want. Also, they will learn how to barter.

After Christmas, I’m looking for some parent helpers during our reading groups from 12:45 to 1:15 PM. If you are interested in helping, please email me. If you could pick a day of the week that works for you, please let me know. Wednesday morning after the Christmas service at 9 A.M., we’re having our Christmas party where we exchange gifts and have snacks. The children may start bringing gifts on Monday. Please let me know if you’d like to send a treat. Have a blessed Christmas and I’ll see you in the new year!

Grade 3, Mornings – Mrs. Kanitz

This week the students studied the Bible story “Jesus the Good Shepherd,” “The Parable of the Good Samaritan,” and “Mary and Martha.” You can locate these stories in John 10 and Luke 10. Next week we will study “The Parable of the Foolish Rich Man” located in Luke 12. In other classes we are learning about textual point of view, narrative poems, using context clues to figure out word meanings, and important regional features of the United States. In handwriting we will be finishing up the lower case cursive alphabet before Christmas. We will also finish our writing unit about informational text before Christmas. I wish you a very joyous Christmas. God’s richest blessings to you in the New Year!

Grade 3, Afternoons – Mrs. Foelske

The December book report is due on Tuesday, December 22. January’s book approval date is Tuesday, January 5. January’s book needs to be a fiction book. The December Pizza Hut Book It calendars can be turned in when we return to school in January. After the Christmas service on Wednesday morning the students may change out of their church clothes into more casual clothes for the Christmas party.

The Lutheran High School choirs have invited our students to join them for the last song at their Christmas concerts on Wednesday, December 23. Any grade school student is welcome to go on stage and sing Go Tell It on the Mountain with the choirs. The concerts are at 4:30 and 7:30. I hope students from our class will be willing to participate. I pray all of you have a very blessed Christmas as you celebrate our Savior’s birth. May God bless you in the new year!

Grade 4 – Ms. Koch

We have been working hard on our Christmas Eve Program.

On Wednesday, students should wear nice clothes for the Christmas Eve service at 9:00. They may bring clothes to change into afterwards. We will then exchange gifts. Students can bring presents anytime. If students would like to bring snacks they are welcome to do so. I will bring beverages, cups, plates, and utensils. Next week I am going to send home Friday folders on Tuesday. I will send everything home so students do not necessarily need to bring assignment notebooks and backpacks to school on Wednesday. We will take a recess break on Wednesday so coats, hats, and gloves should be brought.

Looking ahead: January Book It and Memory Work calendars will be sent home in their Friday folders. January Book Report is a non-fiction book.

Have a blessed Christmas and New Year!

Grade 5 – Mrs. Garceau I gave the students the format for the December mystery book report. While no one likes to do work over the break, unfortunately this will be due the Monday we return. Some parents have offered to send a snack on Wednesday for our class party. Thank you! I have just asked that the snack be gluten free. Merry Christmas!

Grade 6 – Ms. Raddatz

Happy Friday! Only half a week left until a much needed break!

6th Grade will have a Catechism test on Tuesday.

Please bring your food items for the Christmas party on December 23rd.

Presents may be brought starting on Monday.

Have a blessed Christmas break!

Grade 7 – Mr. Manthe Catechism 5 – Tuesday (12/22): Test on Lessons 13-27. Study sheet has been handed out. Memory Work 5 – Tuesday (12/22): 10th Commandment ~ included on Test; Thursday (1/7): The Conclusion Part A “What does God say about all these commandments?” Memory Work 7 – Friday (1/8): Galatians 4:4&5 Math 6 – Monday (12/21): Test on Unit 5 Math 8 – Tuesday (12/22): Test on Unit 4 Music 7&8 – Thank you and job well done for the Advent Concert on Wednesday! Have a great weekend and a blessed Christmas!

Grades 8 – Mr. Krause Tests next week: None The 8th grade students are reminded to bring their gifts for the student exchanges on Monday or Tuesday so that we have them for our Christmas Party on Wednesday. All of the students in our school have been memorizing their passages and lines for the Christmas Eve service for Thursday. Parents, feel free to have your children practice their recitations in front of you. The boys should be running through their narrations 5 or 6 times a day in order to be fully prepared for that evening. Have a great Christmas Vacation! Mr. Krause’s Office Hours: Every day from 12:30-1:15 and 2:00-2:50 P.M. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00-9:00 A.M. [email protected]

Social Skills – Types of Communication (part 81)

Passive: Passive communicators tend to avoid expressing thoughts, feelings and opinions. They allow others to take advantage of them. As a result they often feel depressed, confused, and hopeless with no control of their life. Behaviors may include allowing others to dominate, speaking softly, limited eye contact and using submissive body language.

Passive-Aggressive Communication: This form of communication hides thoughts, needs, frustrations, and opinions to avoid confrontation. However, under-handed behaviors (embarrassment, sarcasm, sabotage, lying) are used to challenge others. There is usually underlying low self-esteem coupled with feelings of resentment. The passive-aggressive communicator alienates others by not being straightforward.

Aggressive: Aggressive communicators stick up for their rights in a direct but inappropriate way. It stems from low self-esteem and a perceived lack of power. Aggressive communicators try to dominate others and use threats, criticism, intimidation, force, and blame to gain power. As a result, others are alienated leading the aggressive communicator feeling less control.

Assertive Communication: Assertive communication is the most effective. Assertive communicators stand up for their needs, wants and opinions in a respectful, clear manner without trying to push ideas on anyone. They are open and honest while remaining calm and courteous. They are willing to listen to others and compromise. Assertive communicators tend to have healthy, high self-esteem and relationships based on honesty and mutual-respect.
