President’s Report (pictured with daughter, Christina)

Hi everyone

The last couple of months have been pretty busy work wise, but I’ve

also been able to catch up on getting the motor reconditioned in the

1928 Oxford. Unhappy motor picture attached. The motor is

reinstalled and we are starting to run it in. The Wolseley Hornet is

next and then it will be back to work on the 1914 Oxford. The last time

I started it, it only ran for a few seconds and then wouldn’t start again,

Oh well the joys of old cars. I’m looking forward to a few weeks off in

mid-December and having a drive again.

A few more entries have come in for the 2018 Rally and the early

entry prize will be awarded soon (thanks Jill). We need a few

sponsors, so if you have any contacts please let the committee know. The more they can support us, the

better the prizes and cheaper the meal costs will be. And don’t forget to put Sunday the 5th February into

your diaries……remember you are coming to Cambooya!! Directions on inside of back page so you can

rip it off and take it with you.

Merry Christmas to all from Col and family

Event Director’s Report

……With Jim and Tricia

Hi everyone, we hope youwere out in your Morris sometime recently. As you have already read since my last report, we have been to The Mini Muster at Carina in September and our Campout at Crows Nest in October. It was good to see you all out at these events. At the Mini Muster, I had the pleasure of meeting the editor of the BMC Experience, Craig Watson, who was busy taking photos of our Morris 1800. In the last newsletter was a photo of a Mini ute which had a modern motor and rear wheel drive. I don't know why one would bother. Also not mentioned at the Crows Nest Weekend, Royce Lane called in his white 1100 to say hello, a new member Jim Dutton arrived on Saturday in his Modern with a 1935 Morris 8 roadster on a trailer. (In Col's report) Shirley's name should have been Sandra. Apologies to Sandra.

Our next event is our Christmas Lunch at Hatton Vale. Thanks to everyone who came along. Our first club event after the new year will be to Col's Shed at Cambooya on the February the 5th. I know a lot of our members travel huge distances to attend these events. With our Club scattered all around Queensland it is hard to find a compromise of a suitable place that pleases everyone. If anyone would like to suggest a suitable park in their neighbourhood, for our monthly meetings, please let us know. We will organize our events for the next 5 months at out February meeting.

FUTURE EVENTS 2017

JANUARY 28/29th Allora Heritage Weekend is on again next year. This is not a club event, but is a worthwhile event if you’re into anything old and vintage.

FEBRUARY 4/5th The Toowoomba Swap. One of the 3 largest Swap Meets in Australia, with around 2000 sites to look at.

FEBRUARY 5th Col's Place at Cambooya. This is our first club meeting for the year. More details contact Col.

JULY 1 2017 I know this is a long way off, but Mike and Lynn Thatcher have kindly volunteered to organize our Birthday Weekend at Gympie.

That’s all that we have at the moment. We would like to wish everyone a

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

See you all in 2017 - Happy Morrising

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Club members Gary & Narelle Troth, Shirley Leitch, Gary Moore, Paul Pantsou, Jim & Trish Robertson, Graham & Carolyn Anderson, John Scowen, Sandra & Allan Klein and Jill Fowlie got together for the annual Christmas party. We met for morning tea at Forest Hill not far from Laidley in the town park. In the early 1900s Forest Hill was Australia’s largest produce distribution centre. After catching up we drove through part of the beautiful Lockyer Valley to our lunch venue at Fairways Tavern and Golf Club at Hatton Vale. After lunch we had our Christmas cake supplied and decorated by Trish. Thank you Trish, we loved it.

May we take this opportunity in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Shirley’s thought of the month:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the friends out there

Life’s truest happiness is found in

friendships we make along the way

Morris Register of Qld is hosting the 21st National Rally on the Fraser Coast Queensland

at Easter 2018

This will be the 21st National Morris Registers Rally, the 2nd Australasia Vintage Minor Rally and our 40th year as a Morris Register. Go to the Rally Link on the website www.morrisregisterqld.org or contact Garry Troth for Bookings. Gary Schulze, our Rally Regalia Officer in Bundaberg is proud to present our new National Rally Logo. Straight off the press, we are all excited with the outcome. Having to fit two Rally Registers on the badge with respective logos proved a challenge but I don’t think anyone could do any better than what we have now. Well done to Gary and his trusty team….now what about the shirts and hats!

If you registered your rally entry by the 1st December you were eligible to go into the draw to win a 2 night stay at

Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island The winner will be announced in the December issue of the

Fraser Flyer Rally newsletter…. Good Luck

THE FIRST REDEX RALLIES – Story Provided by Mick Thatcher

In 1953 the Redex Cars came to town (Mackay), and back then this was the greatest event ever to happen, as my most treasured possession being dinky toys was being replaced by the real thing. At this time Dad was now the proud owner of a 29 Essex and Uncle Allan was letting me steer his 27 Chev-Ute on his cattle property.

The roads the Redex cars had to challenge were unbelievable to today’s drivers. Bitumen south of Mackay only went to the Sarina Range with a two mile section in between of concrete and north about twenty miles, then dirt between and around the trees to Proserpine. In January 1953 1 was in one of the first vehicles to get through the black soil from Marlborough to Rockhampton, it being one of the first short wheel base Land Rovers.

The corrugations were so bad on the highway from Mackay to Rocky that sometimes you had to change gears to get over them and also they could loosen your teeth and every nut and bolt on your car.

Some of the drivers to check-in to Mackay were Norm Hamilton in a Porsche 356 (something wrong with this car with a spare engine in the boot, that's not fair), Jack Brabham, old Holden (he did teach Australia how to get the most out of a V 8), Lex Davidson in a Holden finished 4th only three points behind the winner. I think Lex was one of the nicest blokes I have ever met. It could be that his grandson drives in V8's today.

Other big names driving was Alan Jones' dad Stan in a Holden, Larry Perkins' dad Eddie driving a Rover 75 but winning in a VW 1200 in'56 and '58, Jack Davey of radio fame driving one of the first Customlines, Kenny Turban the winner in a Peugeot, the first time I had ever seen one of them, Frank Klining from Queensland in a morris minor who six years later supplied the alloy head for my '52 side valve minor at 14 to 1 compression.

Oh! by the way gellignite Jack Murray did win in '54 in a '48 Ford V8 without loss of points.

He did let a stick of gelly off before leaving town. Heavy rain had fallen between Mtlsa and Townsville making a really sticky section with only two cars driving through. One was "Granny" (who was a great character) made it across in her post vintage Rolls Royce with 21inch diameter wheels. She also towed a lot of others through. The other vehicle being a Morris Minor that the rally team had fitted spacers on the rear wheels, so as to attach duel-wheels outside of the mudguards for occasions like this.

I believe it must have been a side-valve Morris Minor as their diffs and rear axles were indestructible as I certainly proved in sprint meetings at Lowood, Lakeside and motorkhanas, one of which in Sydney, as competing for Queensland against 120 other drivers from all over Australia, I came 3rd in the forward and reverse parking, and meeting Stirling Moss who was chief judge. Sadly my neck has trouble bending for reverse parking these days, but strangely it works a bit better if a beautiful woman walks by.

THE REDEX GYMPIE CONNECTION

In 1953 Viv Burton (the Gympie agent for Nuffield Tractors & Morris Vehicles) driving a Morris Minor finished ahead of 108 other cars of which 43 did not finish as most of the roads were only built for horse and cart. So in '54 Viv with brother Wes determined to do it more comfortably driving a Morris Oxford and I can tell you this comfort would have cost at least 40% more in fuel costs, though the end result did prove worthwhile.

Up with the leaders close to the Sydney finish they hit an oil patch causing a tree to jump out in front of the car, but with road side helpers chewing lots of gum, the radiator was repaired for finishing. Lord Nuffield rewarded them with a new Morris Oxford in exchange for the redex car, which was used for sales promotion around the world, as back then this rally was worldwide news.

LAMA 2017 - October Invitational Run 7th to 8th October, 2017

Elise Pakeman wants us to know that LAMA’s Annual Invitational Run is run on the first full weekend of October each year. The 2017 run will therefore be the weekend following the long weekend. It will be LAMA’s 25th anniversary as a club so it will be an extra special celebration.

Participants who have made their accommodation bookings for the long weekend will have to change the booking. Our new motel should be operational early in the New Year and this will alleviate the problem of accommodation for a while. Further information to follow as the event gets closer.
