Today there are migrants who are walking away from their mother land looking for a better place to live. The journey of the Holy Family is similar in spirit to the treacherous paths’ migrants must take when politics or economics displace them. So many other footsteps are hidden in the footsteps of Joseph and Mary. We see the tracks of entire families forced to set out in our own day. We see the tracks of millions of persons who do not choose to go away but, driven from their land, leave behind their dear ones. In many cases this departure is filled with hope, hope for the future; yet for many others this departure can only have one name: survival. Helping people fleeing home for a better life, or just to survive, is a Christian imperative. We must remind ourselves Jesus taught that “true power and authentic freedom are shown in honouring and assisting the weak and frail.” As a parish, I encourage you to bring a food gift card to the parish which we will in turn give to needy families.
