Ünlü gezgin Evliya Çelebi, 1671 yılına ait notlarında, Silifke’den
Tarsus’a uzanan sahil yolunda bulunan “Mersinlioğlu” adlı bir
Türkmen kışlağından söz etmektedir. Evliya Çelebi’nin sözünü
ettiği yer bugünkü Mersin’in kurulu olduğu bölgedir. Kaptan
Beaufort, 1812’deki notlarında, “Mersina”yı birkaç kulübeden
oluşan bir yer olarak tanımlamaktadır. Ch.Texier, 1830’larda,
bahsetmektedir. Mersin’in, 1855’ten itibaren Adana ve
civarının başlıca iskelesi haline geldiği, Th. Kotschy’nin
seyahatnamesinden anlaşılmaktadır. Langlois ise, Mersin’in,
Mersin’i de doğrudan doğruya etkilemiştir.
Evliya Çelebi, a famous Ottoman traveller who lived in the 17th
century, wrote about a Turkoman winter camp named
"Mersinlioğlu" he saw in an area, which remains within boundaries
of Mersin province today, while he was travelling from Silifke to
Tarsus in 1671. In 1812 Captain Beaufort defined "Mersina" as a
settlement consisting of a couple of huts in his diary. In 1830s Ch.
Texier described it as a village surrounded by the ruins of ancient
settlements and being used as the real port of Tarsus. Th. Kotschy's
travel notes indicate that Mersin became the main pier Adana
and its periphery after 1855. Langlois defined it as biggest port in
the region constructed on the ruins of ancient Zephyrium city.
This settlement, which is named after a Turkoman winter camp
according to some travelers or after myrtle tree which is
common to this region according to others, entered the 19th
century as an ordinary village which preserved its status as a
village of Gökçeli township of Tarsus county in Adana Province
until the Ottoman reforms declared in 1839. It went through a
radical change early in 19th century when it became the main
pier of Çukurova because Tarsus port was unable to
accommodate the rising demand. Çukurova became the most
busy agricultural and industrial center of Anatolia taking
advantage of the liberal atmosphere that followed the reforms
and Mersin was declared as the center of township in 1851 and
an independent county of Adana province in 1877. Its growth
and transformation gained a new momentum after construction

olan Mersin, 1886’da Adana–Mersin demiryolunun hizmete
girmesiyle hızla değişip gelişmeye başlamıştır.
Mersin, XIX. yüzyılın sonunda dünyanın dört bir yanıyla ticari
ilişkileri olan Akdeniz’in canlı bir liman şehri haline gelmiştir. Hint
l iman ü ze r i nden i h raç
edilmiştir.
Osmanl ı Bankası , Z i raat
Türkiye’nin ilk on ili içinde yer almıştır.
of Adana - Mersin railway line. At the end of the 19th century
Mersin was a dynamic port city in the Mediterranean which was
maintaining commercial ties with countries in every part of the
world. Indian goods, Russian oil, Chinese rice, Manchester cloths,
French coffee and sugar, matches, small ironwares and many
other goods were imported while crops and cotton harvested in
Çukurova and Anatolia, wool, leather, silk-cocoon, live animals,
raisin, carpet, wax, timber were being exported to all the
Mediterranean countries, particularly France and to Russia.
In 1888 Ottoman Bank, Ziraat Bank and Thessaloniki Bank opened
their branches in Mersin. Die
Deutsche Orientbank, La
Banque Française de Syria and
Athens Bank were among other
leading banks doing business in
the city in that period.
In 1924 Mersin and İçel were
separated as two provinces.
They were united in 1933 with
Mersin designated as the
capital city of İçel province.
With its beaches and green
landscape Mersin has a great
tourist potential today. It is a
multi-faceted and rapidly
growing city with a modern
port, a free zone and major
industrial and commercial
establishments. In spite of its
short history as a city Mersin was
rapidly transformed into an industrial city complemented by
trade and service sectors.
It is among Turkey's ten largest cities in terms of industrial, agri-
cultural and commercial potential.
Mersin has potential for further growth thanks to its strategic,
historical and cultural role between Europe and the Middle East
as well as its mild climate.
It has all the factors including its geographical location and wide
hinterland and a completed infrastructure which an investor
would take into consideration before making its decision to go
ahead with an investment plan. On the one hand it has industrial
parks, qualified labor and high living standards and, on the other,
it features numerous plains, beaches, fertile soil and typical
Mediterranean climate preferred not only by local, but also
foreign investors.

Tarihten Günümüze From History to Present
İçel’in Kalkolitik, İlk Tunç ve Orta Tunç Çağlarından beri bir
yerleşim yeri olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Yörede Hititler, Asurlar,
Fenikeliler, Frikyalılar, Yunanlılar, Selefkoslar, Araplar, Selçuklar,
Karamanoğulları ve Osmanlıların kültür birikimi mevcuttur.
İ.Ö. 17-12 yy. arasında Hititlerle Kizuvatna Krallığı hüküm
sürmüş, İ.Ö. 1290-612 yılları arasında Kue Krallığı ve İ.Ö.
546’da Persler yöreye yerleşmişlerdir. İ.Ö. 334 yılında
Makedonya Kralı Büyük İskender bölgeyi ele
geçirmiş, özellikle Silifke yöresinde etkinliğini
sürdürmüştür. Kral Selefkos Nikador, adını bu
ilçeye vererek hükümranlığını İ.Ö. 100 yılına
kadar devam ettirmiştir. İ.Ö. 66 yılında
Roma İmparatorlarından Pompeus,
korsanların işgalindeki Mersin ve
çevresini zaptederek Soli
şehrini kendi adına izafeten
Pompeipolis olarak değiştir-
miştir. Böylece Kilikya ve
Selefkoslar ülkesi bir Roma
eyaleti olmuş, daha sonra
doğu bölgesi Antonius’a
verilmiş ve onun yöneti-
minde Tarsus ile çevresi
zenginleşerek bir bil im
merkezi olmuştur. M.S. 330

According to archaeological findings, İçel was a settlement as
early as the Chalcolithic, the Early Bronze and the Middle Bronze
ages. Hitites, Assyrians, Phenicians, Phyrigians, Greeks,
Selefkossians, Arabs, Seljuks, Karamanoğulları and Ottomans
have left their cultural traces in the city.
Between the seventeenth and twelfth centuries B.C. Kizuvatna
Kingdom, which was contemporaneous with the Hitites, ruled
the area and they were succeeded by the Kue
Kingdom between 1290 and 612 B.C. and
Persians settled in the city in 546 B.C. Alexander
the Great, the King of Macedonia invaded the
region in 334 B.C. and he was particularly
influential in the area today known as Silifke
county which was named after King Selefkos
Nikador who ruled the region until 100
B.C. In 66 B.C. Roman emperor
Pompeus occupied Mersin and its
vicinity which were invaded by pirates
and changed the city's name from Soli to
Pompeipolis, derived from his name. Thus,
Kilikia and Selefkos country became a Roman
province and later its eastern part was
granted to Antonius. Under his rule Tarsus and
its hinterland flourished eventually becoming

döneminde (361-363) putperestliğin
resmi din olması ve Hristiyanlara baskı
yapılması nedeniyle büyük karışıklıklar
yaşamıştır.
İlk Kral Arcadius zamanında Kilikya
eyaleti üçe bölünmüştür: Silifke, Tarsus
ve Anavarza. Bu dönemde Neapolis
(Kanlıdivane) şehri kurulmuştur. Bizans
bil inmektedir. Çok kısa bir süre
Selçukluların elinde kalan İçel, 1516
yılında Yavuz Sultan Selim döneminde
Osmanlı topraklarına katılmıştır. Mısırlı Mehmet Ali Paşa
ayaklanması sırasında Mersin ve çevresi İbrahim Paşa
tarafından ele geçirilmiş, 1839 Kütahya Anlaşması ile
Osmanlılar yeniden egemen olmuşlardır.
Osmanlı Devletinin son zamanlarında İçel’de müstakil
mutasarrıflık ve Sancak kurulmuş, Sancağın merkezi Silifke ve
bir süre de Ermenek olmuştur.
Önceleri Tarsus ilçesi Gökçeli bucağına bağlı olan Mersin
1850 yılında bucak merkezi olmuştur.
1864 yılında Mersin’de kaza teşkilatı, 1894 yılında da
a center of knowledge. The region continued to prosper until 330
A.D. and experienced a big turmoil because idolatry was
declared the official language and the Christians were
oppressed during the rule of Emperor Julianus (361 - 363). Kilikia
province was divided into three parts during King Arcadius' rule:
Silifke, Tarsus and Anavarza cities were designated as the centers
of these regions. Neapolis (Kanlıdivane) city was built during this
period. Urbanization continued during the Byzantian rule and
Cyprus and Silifke was invaded by Muslim armies which occupied
Kilikia during Muaviye's rule. However, the Byzantians took control

İlçe olmuş, böylece İçel’in ilçe sayısı 13’e çıkmıştır.
of the region after a while.
We know that Muslim armies recaptured the region in 705 and
maintained their rule for a period of 250 years. İçel remained
under Seljuk rule for a very short period and it was annexed to
Ottoman territory by Yavuz Sultan Selim in 1516. However, Mersin
and the neighboring areas were captured by İbrahim Pasha
during the revolt led by Mehmet Ali Pasha from Egypt and
Ottomans reinstated their rule under the Kütahya Agreement
concluded in 1839.
During the final years of the Ottoman Empire, İçel was
reconstituted as a province and a governor was appointed. Its
center was first Silifke and then Ermenek for a certain period.
Mersin, which was a subdivision of Gökçeli township in Tarsus
county, was declared the center of the township in 1850. In 1864
a district organization was established in Mersin and a provincial
organization, whose center encompassed Mersin and Tarsus,
was set up as part of Adana province and it became a province
in 1915.
French and British armies, who had invaded the entire Çukurova
region in 1918 after the World War 1, left Mersin on January 3,
1922 according to the Ankara Agreement signed after the
Liberation War. Mersin Province was established in 1924.
İçel province (capital city Silifke) was abolished in 1933 and Silifke,
Anamur, Gülnar and Mut counties became a part of Mersin
province whose name was changed to İçel. But because of
several reasons in 2002 the name Mersin has been dedicated to
be used as the name for the whole province.Mersin has thirteen
counties including Erdemli constituted in 1954 and Aydıncık
(Gilindire), Bozyazı and Çamlıyayla counties which were
established in 1989 and Akdeniz, Yenişehir, Mezitli and Toroslar,
which participated within the borders of Metropolitan
Municipality, constituted in 2008.

The economy of Mersin is composed of agriculture, trade,
industry and domestic tourism sectors where all sectors are
growing together. The trade sector is however the most
advanced of all thanks to the international port, improved
activities in the Free Trade Zone, and exports based on
agricultural and industrial products. Agriculture sector has
become the second in rank due to citrus fruit grown in large
areas, out-of-season vegetables and fruits grown in greenhouses
and viniculture. Petroleum refinery, glass industries, cement,

Akdeniz kıyı şeridinde (Adana, Mersin, Hatay, Antalya) Türkiye
limon üretimin %42'si, greyfurt üretiminin %85'i, portakal ve
mandalin üretiminin %68'i gerçekleştirilmektedir.

chrome, soda industries, cellulite paper, woven textiles, food

The Mediterranean coast of Turkey (Adana, Mersin, Hatay,
Antalya) accounts for 64% of the country's citrus fruit
production, 42% of lemon production, 85% of grapefruit
production and 68% of orange and tangerine production.
33% of the country's citrus fruit exports come from Mersin firms.
Mersin accounts for 50% of the country's exports of cereal.
It is also an important potential for development of tourism that
there are virgin areas along the coastline of 320 kilometres.
Domestic tourism activities are very much developed, but
recent years Mersins' tourism reached to an international level
with the tourists coming from Middle East countries.
Due to intensive building activities in Mersin, the construction
sector is also one of the fast developing sectors.

Uzuncaburç (Olba–Diocaesarea)
Silifke’nin 30 km kuzeyinde bulunan Uzuncaburç’a vadi ve ormanların arasından geçilerek gidilir.

Uzuncaburç which is 30 km north of Silifke is reached through valleys and forests. Being one of the religious centres of the Hellenistic era, Uzuncaburç was called “Olba” in that period and “Diocaesarea” during the Roman period. In the entrance to it, there is a theatre dating back to the Roman period and, around it, there is a holy road with ancient remains. All the 36 columns of the Zeus Olbios Temple, which is 2,300 years old, surrounded by high walls and with a vast courtyard, are intact. At the end of the holy road is a temple built for Tykhe (Fortuna), the goddess of success and good luck. The City Gate which has a monumental character was constructed with cut stones. The tower which dates back to the Hellenistic era and the stone graves which cover the slopes along the valley in the north indicate that Uzuncaburç was one of the most important cities of the period.

Caves of Heaven-HellThis is a large pit which came into being when the ceiling collapsed as a result of chemical erosion caused by an underground creek. It is said that the cave which is located at the bottom of the initial subsidence and is one of these natural wonders known as the “Corycian Caves” in the ancient ages was the home of the Monster Typhon. At the entrance of the cave, there is a small church which a pious man named Paulus caused to be built. One goes down the subsidence of Heaven by a stair of 452 steps each of which is quite wide. There are 300 steps to the church. After the church, one hears the sound of a mythological under-ground creek at the point where the cave ends. The pit of Hell which is 75 metres ahead of the subsidence of Heaven came into being in a similar way. The pit of Hell looks awe-inspiring. Rumour has it that sinners and criminals were thrown into this pit in the past. It is recounted that Typhon, who was “the giant of giants” in mythology and who destroyed every place through which he went, was confined here. The Cave of Dilek and Asthma which is located 18 metres under the ground is in the vicinity.
