REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago?

Mesa 4 Wheelers 30 Years Ago

November 28th, 29th & 30th, 1986 Crossing the Dunes in Mexico

This Trip was an Annual trip taken by the Mesa 4 Wheelers every year for many years. It was a trip that required one to take everything needed to survive a remote sand dune crossing in Mexico to the beach of the Gulf of California. The trip this year was lead by Hec Ramsey. He had lead this trip many times and knew where the best route was.

Crossing the Dunes in Mexico (Continued)

Leaving Mesa Friday, we all headed for the border crossing at Lukeville. The crossing at the border had to be done before 12 PM.. The group then took Mexico Highway 2 about 15 miles west to our starting point. We set up camp there. The next morning the journey across the sand dunes was started. This trip required some finesse on the throttle, low tire pressure, about 8 - 10 psi, and momentum to keep from becoming stuck in the sand. We always stopped at a little town called Lopez Collada that was along the train route. We were met by the children of the town who we handed out treats to. They were very excited about this. We all enjoyed their enthusiasm. From there we drove over more dunes and around the estuaries on our way to the beach. We arrived at the beach in the late afternoon. Driving the beach was much easier, except you had to watch for the hidden water inlets that could upset your Jeep. We stopped along the way to check out the tide pools to see interesting sea creatures and shells. We made camp on the beach about 2 miles south of El Gulfo. After camp was set up we went to town to buy some fresh shrimp. We would bring the shrimp back to camp, boil a big pot of water, add some seasoning and enjoy a delicious shrimp feast. Sunday morning, we were up early for breakfast. We packed up our camp and gear, stopped in El Gulfo for gas and headed for the border crossing at San Luis. The crossing sometimes took a couple of hours because of all the people coming back from the long weekend in Mexico. We would stop in Yuma at McDonalds for a hamburger, gas up and head for Mesa. This Trip can no longer be done due to Mexico’s cross country restrictions. It was always a challenging trip with sometimes mechanical failures, but the hardy Mesa 4 Wheelers always made it safely back home. Ray Jenkins

CLUB TRIP REPORTS Annual 4-Peaks/Sugarloaf Cleanup, Sponsored by Copperstate 4-Wheelers Trip Leader: Rory & Lori Moore Date: November 5, 2016 Those attending the Copperstate 4-Wheelers Cleanup this year were: Rory & Lori Moore, Bob & Ann Nyberg, Mike Drawsky, Don Doty, Jeri & Harold Liberman, Rob Hayton, Lee Coppage, Mic & Jamie Radford, Nathan Stringer, Bill & Amy Mihailov, Jim Kawa, Walt & Gert Leible, former Mesa 4 Wheeler member Bob Schmeckpeper and guests Glenn & Terri Luce. Thank you to all that attended! This year we worked on several areas on the Old Bush Highway. The first spot that we came to, Bob Schmeckpeper was already hard at work. A lot of hill side to clean! A few of us went further down the Old Bush Highway, where we found Glenn and Terri Luce cleaning. We jumped in and helped get that area clean and then moved on down the road picking up along the sides of the road until we found our next spot. We had some help here from a couple of men that had been out target practicing. They helped in cleaning up that spot. A big thank you to Nathan and Lee for bringing out their trailers! There was lunch and a raffle after everyone returned to the staging area. I did hear that several Mesa 4 Wheelers ended up with a gift certificate. All in all, we had fun and it was for a good cause. Hope to see everyone out there next year! Lori Moore

Like all past 4-Peak’s cleanups it does not take long to fill up a trash bag!

The biggest pile of garbage on today’s cleanup, was this complete roof of composition shingles. There was enough to fill up Bob Shmeckpepper truck, and Lee trailer!

Lee’s trailer made cleaning up the roofing shingles a bit easier. The size and weight of the shingles was too much weight for the garbage bags, so we loaded them directly into his trailer.

Past member Bob Schmeckpepper, had arrived early and already had one garbage bag full of spent ammo and target debris.

Rob’s Jeep was full of target debris that Mike, Nathan and he had gathered up from across the wash on a neighboring hillside.

After 3 hours of steady raking, shoveling and hand picking, we had this trashed shooting sight cleaner than it had been in years!

Nathan Stringer built most of this trailer himself. It sure came in handy for today’s cleanup!

Bulldog Canyon Trip Leaders: Harold & Jeri Liberman Date: Nov 12, 2016 Members in attendance: Walter & Gert Leible, Bob & Ann Nyberg, Dave & Paula Brown, Don Doty, Mike Drawsky, Kurt Loga, Rory & Lori Moore, Nathaniel Stringer, Jack Gray, Jim & Kiery Clawson and Jan Northcutt. Guests in attendance: Mike & Sue Spahle, Terri, Sara & Glenn Luce, Chad Spangler, Chad Chaney, Steve & Jacque Smith, Dan Lundberg and Pamela Vespie.

The run had a super turnout on a day with excellent weather & conditions. The run started at 10:00 am at the assembly area off Usery Pass Road and ended just north of Goldfield where most of the participants enjoyed good food and camaraderie. The route utilized trails 3554,10, and 1356. We had a total of 19 vehicles consisting of twelve members and seven guests. Traffic on the trails was a little heavier than usual with a Pink Jeeps now doing runs on Bulldog and ATV's. One ATV running too fast in a blind area had to lock up his wheels to avoid hitting the lead Jeep.

Most of the V8 transplant issues on Rory & Lori’s TJ have finally been resolved! This was the first trail run they had taken it out on since the install began over a year ago.

In preparation for today’s run, Rory & Lori had their TJ professionally detailed. The paint was oxidized and faded. The detailers had done an amazing job bringing the shine back!

No better way to spend a perfect Arizona weather day, than to be wheeling in the desert!

Bulldog Canyon’s gorgeous scenery always attracts a good number of participants.

Ann, Bob, Lori and Rory discussing the possibility of starting up a Red Jeep Club!

Today, 4 out the 18 Jeeps were red, including our trip leader’s Harold and Jeri. Standing out from the rest, it was the largest number of red Jeeps I can recall seeing on any previous run!

This was the first time we had seen Mike in the passenger seat and Sue behind the wheel. She was enjoying the drive so much, she told me they may be looking for a second Jeep!

Starting from the Bulldog Canyon staging area, off of Usery Pass Road, they first third of the trail is in a sandy wash. At this large rock outcropping we turned right, out the wash, where the road turns from soft sand to hardened rock pan.

Driving a YJ, the last generation of Jeeps to use leaf springs, Mike had to air down more and take it slow in order to make the ride as comfortable as the newer model Jeeps running coil spring.

Taking a break at the main Bulldog Canyon entrance, off E. McDowell Road. Here, a couple vehicles in our group return to pavement, while the rest of us got back in line and followed Harold & Jeri on FR1356. This stretch of road lead us further east, tying into the Apache Trail, a couple miles east of Goldfield.

Before breaking the group up, we lined our vehicles up for one last panoramic photo!

At the end of FR 10 we took a group picture of everyone and the vehicles, then most of the group proceeded to the final leg of the day on FR 1356.

To cap off today’s great run, we headed over to the Mammoth Saloon, in Goldfield for cold drinks, delicious burgers and to take in a good old gun fight!
