Message from Dean Milnes Dear Friends of CVAD, The spring semester at CVAD promises to be an eventful and creative one. The fabulous Nick Cave performances and exhibition are coming up in March and we have 200 CVAD students and volunteers, 60 dancers and 100 musicians from UNT working on this project with him. Kudos to UNT ArtGalleries Gallery Director Tracee Robertson for coordinating this extravaganza for us! As you will see in this issue of Stories from the Avant-Garde, the spring calendar is full of student and faculty shows on and off campus. The UNTArtGallery, the Lightwell and North Galleries in the Art Building, Cora Stafford Gallery in Oak Street Hall, the Student Union Gallery, Fashion on Main, and UNT on the Square provide well over 100 exhibitions on campus and in our community each year. Message from Dean Milnes

Dear Friends of CVAD, The spring semester at CVAD promises to be an eventful and creative one. The fabulous Nick Cave performances and exhibition are coming up in March and we have 200 CVAD students and volunteers, 60 dancers and 100 musicians from UNT

National Parks Project: Vessels & Haiku by Harlan W. Butt CVAD Regent's Professor Harlan Butt exhibition is inspired by the earth, its plants and animals. The making of art, for him, is more than a record of these things, it is part of the activity of discovering connections. The patterns in his cloisonné represent nature’s repetition in structure and surface. Words are the human marks we make to signify meaning. Since 2003 he has specifically chosen the National Parks as a source of inspiration, visiting a select number of them, spending time there and creating artworks that reflect his experiences. Nick Cave: Herd, a New Performance Piece A new performance piece called Herd, will feature UNT student dancers in 30 horse-like Soundsuits being corralled by UNT percussionists and then breaking apart into 60 hybrid beings that move in increased improvisation. Cave collaborated with UNT at, dance, music

Clyde Igarashi: Drawing & Painting Exhibition Clyde believes when he paints stands for what he is and what he is makes paintings. He is Japanese living in the United States and believes the different cultures of the US and Japan have caused him to question his identity. Mokuhanga Relief PrintingWorkshop with Kazuko Goto Mokuhanga is a traditional Japanese woodblock printing technique also known as ukiyo-e, or picture of the floating world. This workshop will introduce students to the basic mokuhanga technique and enable them to produce multiple color woodblock prints using the kento registration system. Participants will carve blocks, prepare paper, and print a small edition. Because mokuhanga does not require a printing press or toxic chemicals, those who have taken the workshop can print safely at home afterwards. Maximum Enrollment: 10 Oak Street Hall Annex (P.R.I.N.T. 6th Annual Medieval Graduate Student Symposium The keynote speaker is Professor Jean Givens from the University of Connecticut. The title for the keynote address is "Medieval Art and the Wonders of Nature: The Strange Case of the King's Elephant." Jean Givens is Professor of Art History. Her research centers on medieval England and France, the history of visual and verbal literacy, and design initiatives in twentieth-century Denmark and Sweden. She has published two books. Observation and Image-Making in Gothic

Art(Cambridge, 2005) was awarded the 2009 John Nicholas Brown prize by the Medieval Academy of America.Visualizing Medieval Medicine and Natural History, 1220-1550 (co-edited with historians of science, Karen M. The University of North Texas Art Gallery presents curatorial and

installation projects that challenge and promote discourse surrounding living artists and their work. Prominent curatorial projects include Re-Scripting the Story: Mary Beth Edelson 1970-2000; Wenda Gu, from middle kingdom to biological millennium; Liminal Britain; Dafatir: Contemporary Iraqi Book Art; Furniture as Metaphor, Contemporary Sculpture and the Poetics of Domesticity; Daniel Bozhkov Recent Works & Rainmakers’ Workshop; Saint in the Suburbs, Recent Work by Zoë Charlton; Graff, Tag and Bomb: the Influence of Graffiti; and A Place in the Painting Continuum.

Cora Staffard Gallery

Cora Stafford Gallery is a bi-level exhibition space featuring UNT College of Visual Arts and Design MFA exhibitions and faculty-led class projects,

such as the bi-annual Senior Drawing and Painting, Senior Watercolor and Senior Photography shows. In addition, this space provides a venue for experimental and collaborative student-organized exhibitions and visiting artist workshops, rotating weekly throughout the academic year. The Cora Stafford Gallery is named after Dr. Cora Stafford, an imaginative and enlightened leader who served as a faculty member and art department director from 1921 to 1965. Lightwell Gallery

The Lightwell Gallery is a student-run gallery located on the first floor on the College of Visual Arts and Design building. The Lightwell Gallery not only serves as a venue for weekly rotating exhibitions of student work throughout the academic year, but has also been known for hosting impromptu performances, critiques and discussions. The space is named for the open architectural feature that traverses all three floors of the building, ending at three large skylights that flood the gallery with natural light.

North Gallery

The North Gallery provides a project space for work from the award-winning Fashion, Interior and Communication Design disciplines, as well as sculpture, metalsmithing, ceramics, printmaking and other studio disciplines.
