Message from Fr. Rey Brothers and Sisters,

As we are mid-way through September, I continue to hope that we will have fewer days with temperatures over 100! I also hope that all of us continue to pray for an end to this pandemic. As the Body of Christ, we grow closer to Jesus and con nue becoming disciples by listening to what He has to tell us. Although we may not hear Him with our ears, if we listen with the ears of our hearts, we may hear Jesus through the Scriptures, through our humble Church leaders, and maybe even through a homily!

I am so very glad that many of you hear Jesus while spending time with Him in the adoration chapel. Several people have asked me when more hours and days will be added. Recently, we checked with those who committed to adoration in the past and many are ready to return to their schedule! So we are happy to announce adoration on Fridays, from 9am to 8pm, will now be included in the regular schedule. Offering a Mass Inten on The custom of reques ng a priest to offer the Mass for a specific inten on, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession, insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrec on. To request a Mass offering for the inten ons of a living person or for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, please feel free to contact the Parish Office. For more information and to make the request electronically (with optional payment by credit card) please visit corpuschristiphx.org/mass-inten on.

Please consider Online Giving! Safe • Simple • Secure

Our parish was founded 35 years ago, and we want it to continue strong in its mission to lead people closer to Jesus for the next 35 years and beyond! There has never been a bigger need, or better reasons, to use Online Giving to support our parish. To get started, please click the ONLINE GIVING but-ton at corpuschristiphx.org and follow the simple instructions for repeat electronic giving to the Sunday Collection.

Thank you for your continued support & generosity!

Corpus Chris Catholic Church www.corpuschris phx.org 4

This week, we’ll take a closer look at the second Marian Dogma declared by the Magisterium, which is Mary’s perpetual, or three-fold, virginity. This dogma was confirmed at the Second Council of Constan nople in 553 AD and then later pronounced by Pope Martin I at the First Lateran Council in 640 AD. By three-fold virginity, we mean that Mary was a virgin before the birth of Jesus, during the birth of Jesus, and after the birth of Jesus. I will explain what each of those mean in more detail and clarify some common ques ons.

To start, Mary was a virgin before she conceived and bore Jesus. This is something all Christian religions agree on and is not much of a hurdle to get across. We look to Tradi on for our first source of authen city on this matter. The Apostles’ Creed, which was developed in the very early Church, proclaims, we believe in Jesus “…who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary…” This shows that even the earliest Chris ans understood the Savior to be born of a virgin. We can also look to Scripture for the founda ons of this belief. Isaiah 7:14 tells us, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Then, a er the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary to tell her she will conceive and bear a son, her response is, “How will this be, since I do not know man?” (Luke 1:34). Here, she is alluding to her virginity. She is not doub ng the word of the angel, but merely asking how it will come about since it will not be in the natural way. Gabriel explains that the Holy Spirit will descend upon her in order for the conception to occur. So, between both Tradition and Scripture, it is not a far leap for Christians to agree on the state of Mary’s virginity

before the birth of Christ.

The second way the Church defines Mary’s virginity is that it was preserved during the birth of Jesus. This is a point that is a li le less understood and I hope to clarify here. When we talk about

virginity in this sense, we are not talking about sexual intercourse, as that would be strange in this context. What we mean is that her virginal integrity was kept intact during the birth of Jesus. Last week we discussed how what we proclaim to be true about Mary, is to protect what is true about Jesus. Jesus is God and it is contrary to the nature of God to corrupt or defile anything. St. Thomas Aquinas quotes St. Augustine in his Tertia saying, “It is not right that he who came to heal corruption, should by his coming violate integrity. Jesus was born by divine power without physical viola on of Mary’s virginity.” Think about any other scenario where God enters into something or someone. Does He corrupt it, or does he sanctify it? For example, when God breathed life into Adam, He did not corrupt him. When the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost, He did not corrupt them. When the Eucharist enters into your body, you are not corrupted, but elevated. So, it is clear to see that this truth about Mary had to be declared in order to protect the divine nature of Jesus Christ. Now, the challenge for us is understanding how Jesus was born without corrupting Mary’s virginal integrity. The early Church fathers – including St. Clement of Alexandria, St. Ambrose, and St. Epiphanius – describe the birth as a miraculous birth, using the image of light passing through glass without harming the glass. We won’t fully understand how the birth of Jesus occurred un l we get to heaven, but for now,

we can have faith in the God of miracles and trust that he did not corrupt Mary’s virginal integrity.

Finally, we have the third part of Mary’s perpetual virginity, which is that she remained a virgin a er the birth of Jesus. This is the part that many non-Catholic Chris ans, and even some Catholics, have trouble with accep ng. Catholic Bible scholars advocate that Mary took a vow of virginity, which was not uncommon at the me. Joseph would have known this and agreed to it prior to the marriage. When she says, “I do not know man,” she is talking about a permanent state of being for herself. I once heard this example: If someone offers you a cigare e and you responded, “no thank you, I don’t smoke,” you wouldn’t mean that you just don’t smoke right now. You mean that you have the permanent condi on of not being a smoker. Likewise, Mary is not indica ng that she is just a virgin for right now, but that it is a permanent state for her life. Using Tradi on to support this claim, we also have early Church fathers defending her perpetual virginity including, Ephraim, Origen, and St. Augus ne. Remember that her virginity was sanc fied by God, not destroyed, so she would want to preserve this. This is not to say that intercourse between two married people is somehow a form of corrup on, but instead, it made her virginity even more special, elevated, and worthy of preserva on. By preserving her virginal state, she is saying that she values her sexual and bodily nature, and that she gives it back to the Lord as a gi . This is such a hard concept for many today due to our culture’s corruption of what sex should be, but it was not a far leap for Mary in the culture she was living in at the me.

Of course, you’ll hear a couple of objec ons to Mary’s perpetual virginity, which I’ll now address. In Matthew 1:18, we see that “Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child…” and in Ma hew 1:25, we see that Joseph “knew her not un l she had borne a son…” The word “before” in the first quote indicates that he did not have relations with her before she bore a son. That makes sense. However, we must clarify that the word “un l” does not necessarily mean that it happened a erwards. We have other scriptures that support this understanding. In 2 Samuel verse 23, we read, “And Michal the daughter of Saul

had no child un l the day of her death.” Are we to assume she had a child a er her death? No, the word “un l’ only establishes what has not yet taken place. The second common objec on to Mary’s perpetual virginity is that in Mark 6:3 and Ma hew 13:55, Jesus is described as having brothers. The original Greek word used in the text was adelphos, which was used to describe brother, cousin, near rela ve, or kinsman. It does not necessarily indicate a blood brother. Again, we see in other places in scripture where the word adelphos was used in reference to someone who is not a blood brother. In Genesis 13:8, Lot is called Abraham’s brother in the Greek, but you will probably see kinsman in your transla on. In Genesis 29:10, Jacob is referred to as the adelphos of Laban, which again is not a blood brother, but rather more of a cousin rela onship. Addi onally, do we not call our fellow Chris ans our brothers and sisters in Christ? The final common objection to Mary’s perpetual virginity is the idea that it negates the marriage of Mary and Joseph. Again, a vow of virginity was not an uncommon prac ce for different Jewish sects at the

me. The objec on is also a misunderstanding of marriage to imply that sex is a necessary component. While it is a wonderful and beau ful gi in marriage, it is not necessary for a marriage to exist. Again, this is so hard for many to grasp in our culture these days. Marriage really is the uni ng of two wills with Christ in an uncondi onal gi of self, “ l death do us part.” Think of it this way: at the conclusion of a wedding ceremony, when the priest pronounces the bride and groom as husband and wife, are they not really married because the union has not yet been consummated? Of course not. They are already bound to one another for the rest of their lives. Yes, a marriage can be annulled when it has not been consummated, but that is more as an indica on that their wills and hearts were not really united in the first place. So, Mary and Joseph were truly and validly married un l the end.

Hopefully, you now have a deeper understanding of Mary’s virginity. The Church teaches this because it protects our understanding of who God is by highligh ng how He more than just does not corrupt, He also sanc fies, elevates, and glorifies. Meditate on this dogma and see what it moves or inspires in you.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,

be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him we humbly pray;

and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host,

by the power of God, cast into hell Satan

and all the evil spirits who prowl about the

world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Times of Trial

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our na on and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protec on of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this me of trial and tes ng, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.

Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus.

Amen.

Worship Aid — Prayers & Responses for Mass

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Bego en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm: (Psalm 103) The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.

Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven, At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Memorial Acclima on Op ons 1. We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess

your Resurrec on, un l you come again.

2. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, un l you come again.

3. Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrec on you have set us free.

Prayer A er Communion Anima Chris

Soul of Christ, sanc fy me. Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ,

wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me, within thy wounds hide me, separated from

thee, let me never be. From the malignant enemy,

defend me. At the hour of my death, call me and bid me come to thee, that

with thy saints I may praise thee forever and ever.

Amen.
