Our true major highlights the August tournament schedule, the New England Section PGA Professional Championship, August 22-24 at Pinehills Golf Club presented by Club Car, Mercedes-Benz and Omega and supported by Titleist/FootJoy, Nike Golf, Callaway Golf, TaylorMade-adidas Golf/Ashworth and the PGA Tour. One hundred seventy-eight players have entered; if you are one of them look for continuing updates and information concerning this event through emails and on the NEPGA website. I can tell you I have already made my initial on-site visit and both the Jones and Nicklaus courses are in pristine condition. Big thanks to our host John Tuffin, PGA and Superintendent Joe Felicetti.

While we are on the subject of major Championships, con-gratulations are in order for the performances turned in by NEPGA Members Chip Johnson, PGA, Jeff Martin, PGA and Frank Dully, PGA. They all survived the cut and played all four rounds at the 44th PGA Professional National Championship presented by Club Car and Mercedes Benz and played at the Hershey Country Club, Hershey, PA.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, before we get to Pinehills we will have headed north to New Hampshire on Monday, August 1 for our fourth AHEAD Series event. The event will be contested at the exclusive Montcalm Golf Club. It is the next to last chance to earn points if you want to be one of the elite 36 players who will qualify for the year-end AHEAD Se-ries Championship at Turner Hill Golf Club. Cary Gordon and Golf Buddy will be on-site, as always, to help you navigate this beautiful layout. Check out the point standings on the NEPGA website (look under Tournaments & Player of the Year Points).

From there it is on to the beautiful Okemo Valley Golf Club in Vermont for the New England Section Senior Professional Championship. Jim Remy, Honorary President of The PGA of America and Superintendent Rod Williams will be our hosts. For those who are attempting to qualify for the Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Mercedes-Benz, the Champion and the next six low scorers will advance. How many times can we say Thank You to Terry Frechette for his support of both the AHEAD Series and as the long time sponsor of the NEPGA Seniors Championship. “T”, we all appreciate what you do for the New England Section. One last Championship is on the docket in August, the NEPGA Pro Senior-Junior is scheduled for Wednesday, Au-gust 31 at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Many thanks to Paul Parajeckas, PGA for hosting and our event sponsors Mizuno and Sales Representatives Matt Mikan and Brent Skinner, as well as Antigua and Jeff Dibona.

Finally, August is also the month that the NEPGA and its Pro-fessionals give something back by participating in the Joey Coakley Memorial Pro-Am at Charles River Country Club and Woodland Golf Club. This ongoing relationship continues to

help fund the battle to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. Kudos to Jim O’Mara, PGA, Charles River CC and Ted Griffin, PGA, Woodland GC for once again hosting this event.

So by the end of August we will have determined two of our most important Champions, but September is no slouch ei-ther.

The New England Open returns to the Mt. Washington Re-sort, September 7-9, and then it’s on to The Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, September 14 for the final AHEAD Series event. Another Championship, the New England Sec-tion Assistant Championship, September 21-22 at Tedesco Country Club and the Head Professional Championship at Granite Links on September 26. Finally, the Pro-Superintendent Championship at Red Tail Golf Club on Sep-tember 30. Wow! September is a busy month, isn’t it? Hope-fully many of you after a busy season at your clubs will have some much deserved free time and be able to come out and play some golf, we hope you have the opportunity to join us at some of these events.

We want to recognize some terrific performances in July. Congrats go to Greg Sandell, PGA and Rick Karbowski, PGA and their teams of over 50 players from Golf Club of New England and the Auburn Driving Range respectively; both squads fired 8 under par scores of 63 to become Co-Champions at the NEPGA Pro-Senior Championship. Thanks go to Dave Lane, PGA and Hopkinton Country Club for host-ing.

Sandell continued his stellar play, teaming with David Grygiel, PGA to take home the Pro-Pro Stroke Play Championship. A second round 60, yes, that’s right, a 12 under par 60 sealed the deal. I obviously need to start setting these golf courses up harder!! Many thanks to Sales Rep extraordinaire Jeff Dibona, who sponsored this event and Matt Walsh, PGA and Superin-tendent Todd Sauer for hosting.

The extreme heat didn’t slow down the team from Abenaqui Country Club, Jim Sheerin, PGA and Dana Harrity took home the title at the Pro-Lady Championship, once again hosted to perfection by professional Frank Dully, PGA and the Kern-wood Country Club. Many thanks to Tail & Kathy Lynch who were our sponsors. I once again ate too many of Chef’s BBQ ribs! Please continue to check out the weekly “Mixed Bag” emails and the NEPGA website for updates and more information on all things tournaments and we’ll be back with more Tourna-ment News next month. Turning Cans into Cash

Squirrel Run GC PGA Head Professional David Moore contin-ues to lead the way at his home club – turning bottles and cans into cash – and then into charitable donations to junior golf. Moore is pictured below marking another milestone for this season with a goal of $24,000 by the end of the summer!

Moore’s program, which involves staff/ members/ and juniors who routinely play Squirrel Run, is leg-endary in the Plymouth area, raising well over $100,000 since its incep-tion many years ago. Squirrel Run is also host to the Cape Cod PGA chapter Pro-Junior each year. Thanks Dave!!!

Quashnet Valley’s PGA Head Professional Kevan Evangelista fired an even-par 57 at Squirrel Run GC in early July to win low pro and lead his team to 2nd place in the Cape’s annual Pro-Junior. Finishing 2nd low pro was Oyster Harbors PGA assistant Matt Baran. Special mention to sales representatives David Woods (FootJoy) and David Moynihan (Titleist) who provided tee-gifts, lunch and proximity prizes for the entire event. Kevan and his team are pictured below.

Evangelista Captures Low Pro

Cape Cod National’s PGA assistant professional Brad Wheatley topped the field with a stunning 67 at the Ahead Series event at Andover CC held in mid-July. Brad’s efforts pocketed him $1,185 and huge Ahead Points which almost guarantee him a spot in the year end Ahead tournament, fea-turing the top 36 points earners.

Four teams cashed in at the annual PRO-PRO Stroke Play Championship held at Mt. Pleasant. Led by LeBaron Hills PGA Head Professional Tom Rooney and his former assistant Rob Bradley (now at GolfTown/Avon) who finished 8th (-7) our chapter was well represented also by Kittansett’s PGA Head Professional Steve Demmer and PGA Teaching Professional Larry Demers T-9 (-6) and CC of New Bedford’s Joe Cordani who paired with Rhode Islander John Rainone, PGA assistant at N. Kingstown GC on the same score of -6. Rounding out the Cape’s teams who fared well were Rochester’s PGA Head Professional Rusty Gunnarson and Bay Pointe’s PGA Head Professional Tom Tobey who finished T-14 (-5).

Cape Cod Junior Golf Association News

Summer fun for Cape Cod junior golfers continues as the CCJGA has held a weekly event since the end of school averaging over 100 kids per event. At each tournament site local professionals volun-teer their time and exper-tise to conduct clinics for

new golfers. Pictured below are Pocasset GC’s PGA Head Professional Jeff Halunen, Kevan Evangelista and Woods Hole’s PGA Assistant Professional Roman Greer at The Fal-mouth CC event in mid July, where over 130 kids of all ages enjoyed the competition and instruction.

As the NHC mid-year is upon us, Dan Wilkins, Laconia CC Director of Golf has taken the lead in the chapter’s Player of the Year contest. Wilkins, due to his steady playing in recent events has 159 points and leads Lake Sunapee Assistant Pro-fessional Matt Arvanitis (149.9) by almost 10 points. Rounding out the top five are: Bill Schmedes, CCNH Assistant Pro with 130.5; Rich Berberian, Jr., Hoodkroft Assistant, 123.8 and La-conia PGA Head Professional Todd Rollins at 93.2.

The New Hampshire Chapter raised over $13,000 from its annual Super Raffle that was spearheaded by Rob Hardy of HardyGolf. Rob was very instrumental in soliciting prizes for the raffle from his fellow sales representatives who donated sets of irons, various clubs, golf shoes and other equipment. The chapter is also grateful to its members who contributed complimentary rounds of golf for prizes and especially to those members who sold tickets. The money raised is distrib-uted directly in to the professional purse at each NHC event.

The New Hampshire Chapter is gearing up for its annual championship which will be held at the North Conway CC on August 15-16. Defending champion is Rich Berberian, Jr. (pictured right) of Hoodkroft CC who shot a 6-under par score of 136 last year to best Joe Clark, Jr. and Bob McGraw by 5 shots. The latter pair were declared co-champions in the senior division.

RHODE ISLAND CHAPTER

North Kingstown GC PGA Professional Brian Owens took firm hold on the Player-of-Year race in the Rhode Island Chapter with his masterful 4-under par 68 at the scenic Quid-nessett CC on July 26th. Owens, coming off a T-20 at the section’s most recent Ahead Series tournament at Andover put together five birdies with one lone bogey enroute to his three shot victory over Brad Gardner, PGA Professional from Metacomet GC who was the only other pro under par for the day. Gardner’s 71 could have been a winner but a triple bogey seven on the 18th hole cost him a chance at victory. Many thanks to PGA Head Professional John Del Bonis for his gen-erousity in hosting this event. Owens leads his co-worker and fellow PGA Professional John Rainone in the annual POY race with Tramonti just points behind, as the chapter readies for the fall season slate of events at Aoaxet, Misquamicut and Warwick CC. Four chapter teams finished in the top 10 at the section Pro-Pro Stroke Play Championship. Jeff Martin & Troy Pare, win-ners earlier of the Section Match Play Pro-Pro Championship placed 3rd (-12), Dave Baluik and Eddie Kirby finished 7th (-8), while the teams of Brent Amaral and Steve Deimoz and John Rainone and Joe Cordani tied for 9th (-6).

The Vermont PGA Junior Tour has had a very suc-cessful season with partici-pation considerably increased. We have averaged 50 players at each venue for our first four events. Our thanks go out to our sponsors, hosting clubs and their PGA Professionals, our juniors, and especially to all the parents who handle the trans-portation. Our state championship will be conducted on Fri-day, August 5th at Ralph Myhre GC. David Christy, PGA NEPGA Vermont Ch. Operations Manager 802-476-7007 [email protected]
