He asked “What is the connecƟon between the miracle of Chanukah and nechama”? He then recounted the following story told by Rabbi Pesach Krohn. In the year 1944, Harav Shmelka Schnitzler zt”l, was an inmate at the dreaded concentra- Ɵon camp Bergen Belsen. He was an inspira- Ɵon to all the other prisoners with his upbeat and opƟmisƟc aƫtude in spite of the dismal condiƟons of the death camp. As the month of Kislev approached, he proclaimed to any- one that would listen that this year they would somehow find a way to light the menorah on Chanukah. He was scoffed at and told to stop dreaming the impossible. However, he was determined and begged his fellow prisoners not to give up. He explained that if we have bitachon and search as much as possible, there is no doubt that Hashem will provide us with the opportunity to fulfill this mitzvah. A few days before Chanukah, the guards took a small detail of prisoners to work in a field right outside the camp. Rav Shmelka was among this small group and he used the opportunity to search on the ground, hoping to find something he could use as a menorah. Suddenly, he noƟced a mound of dirt that looked as if it had been freshly dug. AŌer looking around to make sure that the guards weren't watching, he moved the dirt and gasped in amazement: lying in the ground was a jar of oil! As he conƟnued to dig, he found a package of wicks and eight Ɵny cups for a menorah. AŌer recovering from his startling discovery, he quickly reburied the hidden treasure and returned to the camp. He went to each of the barracks and asked everyone he could find if they had hidden the menorah he had discovered that morning. No one came forward, reacƟng in disbelief that he had actually found what he had promised. When the first night of Chanukah arrived and no one had claimed the menorah, he snuck outside once more and recovered the pre- cious giŌ Hashem had miraculously provided. It is hard to describe the poignant scene that took place in Rav Shmelke`s barracks that first night and every subsequent night of Chanu- kah, as dozens of Yidden risked their lives to witness and parƟcipate in the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros. Tears flowed freely as they witnessed another Chanukah miracle that took place amongst the horrors of Bergen Belsen. They were once again filled with hope of salvaƟon as they witnessed firsthand the power of a Yid that does everything he possi- bly can and has emunah that Hashem will ful- fill his dreams. Reb Shmelke`s unwillingness to give up against the greatest odds inspired countless Yidden, providing them the strength and determinaƟon to survive the trauma they experienced on a daily basis unƟl they were liberated in April 1945. Several years later, Rav Shmelke was visiƟng the Satmar Rebbe, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum zt”l. As they were discussing their experiences in Bergen Belsen, the Satmar Rebbe shared how he greatly regreƩed one lost opportunity from the Ɵme he had spent there. He told Rav Shmelke that he had been liberated very abruptly on the twenty first day of Kislev of 1944, and hadn't had the Ɵme to tell anyone about the menorah he had hidden just out- side the camp. He was saddened by the fact that he had so looked forward to being mezakeh hundreds of Yidden with the simcha of hadlakas neiros, and that it was sƟll buried so many years later. Rav Shmelke jumped up, grabbed the Rebbe and began to dance with joy. “Rebbe!” he exclaimed. A Yid`s effort and deep desire to do a mitzvah is always reward- ed by the Ribono Shel Olam-even against the greatest odds!” He then proceeded to share the details of his miraculous discovery, and the incalculable joy the Rebbe's menorah had brought to the Jewish prisoners at the darkest point of their lives. CHANUKAH FESTIVITIES

Message from our Menahel, con nued:

We see in this story how even in the midst of tragic events, a glimmer of light emerges. Many mes it is not revealed un l years later how the נסים נסתרים (hidden miracles) played a role in the midst of darkness. In the story of Chanukah, (as men oned in the previous newsle er) if one thinks more deeply into the victory of the חשמונאים against the יונים, one can find much נחמה not only in the outcome, but also in the result that brought about the an thesis of what the יונים tried to accomplish. Their ba le was against ישראל נשמת , not their bodies. They wanted to obliterate the הבדלה בין ישראל לעמים , the קדושת ישראל, which is why they tried to eliminate ראש חדש , שבת and מילה. The end result was a great surge in קדושת ישראל. The desire to use שמן טהור when, as we know, טומאה הותרה בציבור (impure oil is permissible for use when it is for the purpose of a ציבור) brought about the נס of שמן טהור, reflec ng the thirst that כלל ישראל had, to bring a greater and more מהודר holiness to the Beis Hamikdash. With the passing of a Gadol in our mes, Harav Aaron Leib Shteinman, zt"l, we too need נחמה. He was a person who gave of his me and energy for every single type of Jew within כלל ישראל. Besides heading a yeshiva and wri ng seforim on Shas and Tanach, he lived simply and with great humility. He was a true tzaddik, right through his last day at age 104. He traveled the world at age 97 for the sole purpose of giving chizuk to Jews wherever they lived. He traveled to Mexico, Australia, US, Canada etc. His sefer was called אילת השחר; the י ,א and ל were for his name, ,ייבלהודה יהרן א the ת was for his Rebbetzin’s name, ,מרת who was נפטרת in 2004. This symbolized who he was, dignified and respec ul of the highest order, to his wife. May we be זוכה to the נחמה אמיתי with the גאולה שלימה. I hope you all enjoyed a freilichen Chanukah! A Peek                    Into Our Week:

Mrs. Skere ’s First Grade Class: The boys have been learning about the kind of energy that helps us see: light! In this experiment our goal was to find out whether light travels or stays in one place. A er the experiment the boys recorded their observa-

ons which concluded that when light hits an object, it reflects, or bounces off the object in to our eyes so we can see it. They are amazing scien sts. Rabbi Rajchod’s Kitah Vav: In our studies of קרבנות in the בית המקדש, we learned that when the meat of a קרבן expires, the pots used to cook the meat for the קרבנות need to be kashered due to the בליעות they absorbed. We also learned about הגעלה, using boiling water to kasher a pot and about לבון גמור, when metal turns red hot. Rebbe brought in a burner, pots and a blowtorch for a demonstra on. Once we had a kosher pot, we used it to pop fresh popcorn.

Mrs. Kwestel’s Fi h Grade Class: We began our unit on chemical proper es of ma er. We made hand warmers, crea ng an exothermic heat chemical reac on using iron, oxygen and water. In addi-

on, we combined our science knowledge of buoyancy and volume method of displacement, with the process of engineering, and built boats. Their designs used everyday materials such as cups, popsicle s ck straws, balloons and tape. As they floated their boats, they added pen-nies (volume) un l the boat sank. Using engineering steps of designing, building, tes ng and re-engineering, another test of volume was performed by building news-paper tables, using only newspaper and masking tape.

The boys in grades 4‐8 who par cipated in the Shabbos learning and davening program called V’chibadto earned

coins used in the denomina ons of the Mishna, which they redeemed for prizes.

Thank you to the eight grade boys for their help.
