The theme of AME's 2002 Annual Confer- ence in Chicago this November 4-8 is "The Crossroads of Excel- lence." The crossroads idea works on several levels … Chicago is a hub of industry where supply chains intersect and an enormous variety of commodities, both goods and services, are available. It's also a center of transportation— rail, water, and highway — that boasts one of the world's busiest airports. Our economy, North America's, and of the rest of the world, is at a crossroads as well— a hectic, confusing, and often troubling crossroads. Whole emerging, fragmenting, restructuring, outsourcing, migrating, and even dissolving at a dizzying pace. Issues of global competitiveness reach into even the smallest community and enterprise. Running businesses has never been easy. Today, we all need all the help we can get to catch up, keep up, get ahead, and find the .
