Enhancing power generatingcapacityAccording to Mr Chan, the electricity marketin Mainland China resembles that of HongKong in the 1960s when growth in electricitydemand exceeded economic growth by 50%.“The Group believes that demand will remainhigh in the long run, notably in GuangdongProvince . We wil l accelerate our powergenerating capacity to cope with demand andto sustain earnings,” he said. Besides, electricitysales in Macau increased by 9% in the firsthalf of the current financial year. The Groupexpects the trend will carry on due to boomingenter tainment and proper ty industries.

Increasing water investmentsAttributable Operating Profit (“AOP”)of watertreatment and waste management grewremarkably by more than 50% in the first halfthis year. However, growth in urban populationand economic development are pressingdemand for clean water and wastewatertreatment. “According to www.h2o-china.com,water consumption in urban areas is expectedto reach 143 billion cbm and 218 billion cbmin 2010 and 2030 respectively from 103 billioncbm in 2000. The Central Government andmunicipal governments are putting resourcesin and encouraging corporations to expandwater facilities,” said Mr Chan.

Tianj in Tanggu Water Plant and ShanghaiChemical Industr ial Park Water TreatmentPlants commenced operations in April 2005and March 2005 respectively. In view of highercontribution from the segment, the Groupis actively exploring investment opportunitiesin wastewater treatment.

Extending roadway networkAmid increase in traffic flow and rapid economicdevelopment in Pearl River Delta, the Roadssegment posted a 27% increase in AOP inthe fir st half of the current year. Locatedstrategically in the transpor tation hub, NWSHoldings’ roads projects will benefit fromupgrading of the roadway network by theCentral Government as well as higher purchasingpower and car ownership.

Mr Chan said, “We focus onexploring roads projects thatoffer growth potential , forexample , we have recentlyinvested in Bei j ing-ZhuhaiExpressway (Guangzhou-Zhuhai Nor thern Section),G u a n g z h o u - Z h a o q i n gExpressway and Pearl RiverDelta Ring Road (South-western Section).”

Focusing on Mainland PortsEarnings from Hong Kong por ts have beensubstantially eroded while throughput hasdropped dramatically due to fierce competitionfrom Shenzhen por ts. The Group thereforedisposed of its interests in Kwai Chung ContainerTerminal No.3 and No.8 West while maintainingits interest in ATL, which provides steady cashflow and profits to the Group. Occupancyrate at ATL is expected to sustain at a levelabove 90% in 2005. For container handling, the Group will focus on its Mainland Chinaports por tfolio. The investment in Tianjin FiveContinents project to take up a 18% interesthas been signed.

Mr Gordon Kwong explained that according to

the regulations, an INED is mainly responsible for

monitoring the operations of the corporate

lawfully. In fact, the job natures of an INED and

an Executive Director are similar, except that the

former is responsible for decision making in Board

meetings while the latter is focused on daily

operations. Mr Kwong added that based on the

Listing Rules, an INED should balance the interests

of the majority and minority shareholders, and

act as a notary when conflict of interests arise.

Mr Kwong is also a member of both the Audit

Committee and the Remuneration Committee

of the Board, in which he has to monitor the

financial performance and review remuneration

policies of the Group respectively. Through the

channels like the Board and committee meetings,

he can actively participate in the corporate affairs

of the Group.

During the interview, Mr Kwong also shared his

views on the restructuring of the businesses of

NWS Holdings. He believes the new structure

consisting of Infrastructure and Service & Rental

divisions can give investors a clearer perspective

of NWS Holdings.

Time managementFacing enormous meetings and daily routines, Mr

Kwong said humbly that he has no tips about time

management indeed. He depicted that he had

worked in an accounting firm for a number of

years, in which he always needed to serve various

clients and handle various accounts at the same

time. Thanks to the experiences earned, Mr

Kwong has adapted to a tight schedule and

multitasking. He learnt to well manage his time.

On average, he spends two hours on each

meeting. Prior to attending individual meetings,

he needs about two hours to go through relevant

documents. The record that he has made is having

five meetings in a day during the peak season.

Management philosophyWhile being a partner at Pricewaterhouse for

about 10 years, Mr Kwong worked with various

corporate clients from different countries. Each

had their own style, and one made a deep

impression on him about its management motto:

“Teamwork as the foundation, services as the

means, regulations as the base and efficiency as

the core.” Mr Kwong stated that these four factors

cover every essential aspect of a corporation while

all of them are of equal importance.

Work-life balanceDespite the busy work, Mr Kwong does know

how to balance his life. Golfing is his first choice

for relaxation. Besides sports, he is interested in

travelling and reading. He recommends a book,

The River at the Centre of the World, written by

Simon Winchester. He described this is not an

ordinary travel book, but one outlining the history,

culture and customs of the region along Yangtze

River where Mr Kwong is

eager to travel to

L ittering is subject to a HK$1,500 penalty. However, if it happens on the airport apron, itcan cause serious accidents. Therefore, aproncleaning is a crucial part of aircraft safety. SinceJuly 2003, Pollution & Protection Services Limited(“PPS”) has been providing apron cleaningservices at the Hong Kong International Airport. With advanced equipment and management, PPSplays a vital role in maintaining the world’s busiestairport safe and spotless.

Requirements of apron cleaning are stringent asany tiny objects such as a screw and polythenesheet may cause fatal accidents. “There are allkinds of debris we find on the apron. It is nosurprise as there are tens of thousands of peopleworking in the airport every day,” said Eric Wong,Deputy Operations Manager of PPS.

Stringent requirementsIn the busy zones of passenger aircraft parking,PPS employs small apron sweepers withstretchable vacuum parts and water sprayer toremove objects and oil spills. Small vans patrolaround the area to make sure the ground iscompletely cleared. No litter weighing more than50g (about 50 paper clips) per 10,000 sq m shallbe found in a cleaned area or it will be consideredas failing the standard. PPS has so far not failedeven once.

In the cargo apron and aircraft maintenance area,PPS enhances work efficiency by using largerunway sweepers to clean the vast area. Thereare two drivers seats in each of these sweepers,so drivers may have a clear view on the left andright side respectively during their work.

After joining NWS Holdings for a year, I foundthat the company resembles a “Shao LinTemple” where I can acquire different skills andknowledge.

Working in Mainland ChinaI was first assigned to the Infrastructure divisionas par t of my three years’ training. During thelast six months, I was engaged in the TangjinExpressway and Guangzhou City Nor thernRing Road projects. Now I am at the Watersegment and will rotate to the Energy andPorts segments as well as the Corporate Officeduring the remaining period.

My spoken Putonghua has been improved afterworking in Mainland China for a period of time.At the same time, I learned more about thework culture in Mainland China and thenecessary interpersonal skills. The colleaguesthere often invite me to dinner after work.Hardly can I forget the bitter taste of Chinesealcohol! Upon completion of each of mytraining in the two projects, the colleaguestreated me to dinner and bought me local foodwhich made me feel very warm and touched.

Being a toll collectorIt was not as easy as I had expected being atoll collector. Good eyesight, fast typing skillsand accurate calculation are prerequisites. When a vehicle arrives at the toll booth, oneneeds to distinguish the vehicle type, inputinformation into the computer system andcollect tolls; at the same time, not to forgetwaving, nodding, smiling and maintaining eyecontact. It is not uncommon to see driversventing their anger on toll collectors, especiallyduring peak hours. However, our staff are allwel l trained that they remain calm andcour teous towards these dr iver s . Theirprofessionalism sets a good example for me.

A challenging taskI and other Management Trainees were a bitnervous when being asked to do simultaneousinterpretation at the Management Conference,as we had never received such training. Thoughwe did lots of research and consulted certaincolleagues beforehand, the job turned out tobe more difficult than expected. Listening, organizing and translating were all done withinseconds. Our performance might not meetprofessional standards, but each of us gainedvaluable experience. We also realized thatsuccess does not rely on luck, but on sufficientpreparation and teamwork.

Working for a year in the Group, I am not anew kid anymore. To be a role model for thenewly recruited Management Trainees, I willkeep working hard and contribute to theGroup.
