Message from the Leadership

President's Message

Happy Holidays everyone and welcome to the redesigned andrenamed AAENP newsletter. I'm very excited about the newformat and content. This is another portion of our goal forenhanced communication with the members of AAENP. Otherrecent items of enhanced communication include a retooledwebsite for easier use, our social media hits are up each monthand we held our second town hall webinar last month.

Congratulations to Vicki Bacidore, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC,CEN, TNS - winner of our Name that Newsletter contest. Thankyou to everyone who submitted. There were so many creativetitles.

We continue to work on benefits for members. Expanded vendor relationships formember discounts on quality items and services is a focus of our membershipcommittee. If you have ideas or things you would like to see as a benefit, please reachout to the membership committee.

Developing and expanding our partnerships with other organizations has been verysuccessful this year. We have representation on two ACEP task forces. Our partnershipwith the APRN track at ENA 2018 in Pittsburgh was excellent. The educational sessions

were top notch and I enjoyed meeting several of you at the AAENP booth in the exhibithall.

I would like to share a little of the growth we have seen. Did you know we now have 40state representatives? If you don’t know who your state representative is you can lookthem up on the website under member benefits. We have seen a slight increase in ourinternational membership too. With growth comes change. In March, we moved to a newmanagement services association called SOS Association Management Solutions. Theyare based out of Arizona and proud to be the only accredited association managementcompany in the state. SOS has been a great resource and support to AAENP this year.

It is an honor to represent and serve you in the role of president of the only organizationsolely devoted to the emergency nurse practitioner. 2018 was a very productive year forAAENP and I look forward to more accomplishments next year. Speaking of next year, look for two regional conferences in 2019. The first one will be in Nashville, TN. Thesecond one will be farther west, location and date TBD. Additionally, look for us to haveour 1000th member!

Enjoy the holidays. Celebrate with your family and friends. If you are working clinicallylike I will be, celebrate with your colleagues and remember to take time to recharge.

Make it a great 2019!

Founder's MessageIn October of 2013, Arlo Weltge MD (ACEP), Dr. Kyle Kincaidand I sat in a classroom deep in the Texas Medical Center andfounded AAENP. Over the last 5 years I witnessed theemergence of a tribe of emergency nurse practitioners (over900, Nov. 2018) that are integral parts of the future of healthcarein the United States. Our members are all leaders in theirperspective practice sites and beyond! We have made acommitment to providing the best (safest) care in emergencydepartments, urgent cares, critical access and rural America toname only some of our varied settings.

Many are not aware that in 2014 when I put together our board of directors, I called 10colleagues I had met over the years across the country and asked them first, if they werewilling to give up 10 years of their life to AAENP as volunteers. I then asked them to pay$1,500.00 to establish our first budget. You see - I knew these people had a passion foremergency care and LOVED to practice. We always started out meetings with crazy orcomplex cases we had managed in our personal practice. They all said yes – and herewe are!

It’s interesting how we emergency people can walk into any ED in the nation and behome! That is what I hope this organization promotes. There are many issues in ourpractice spanning from our own nursing inconsistencies with acute vs primary care aswell as being acknowledged as a specialty in the complex nomenclature of theConsensus Model. One of our most devastating and yet elating issues was the complexpsychometric instrumentation science that was behind the ENP certification exam for onlyFNPs. It broke my heart that so many of our tribe were excluded.

Our team members, the EM docs, are now questioning our scope of practice and areaggressively discussing the national movement toward NP independent practice and howthey will fight it with their lobbying power. AAENP is at the table. We are discussing ourmodel of collaboration and its necessity in emergency medicine. We are allying with ourpartners, the emergency medicine physician assistants. It is a tight rope but we balanceand speak with evidence and conviction.

My point? We have a long way to go! We need to stay at the table! We need to be ontop of our game at all times. We now have a voice and I promise you AAENP will neverlose site of the most important variable in all of this – the patient!
