Message from the Membership Chairman & 1st V.P. – Drew Anlas: What makes the Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce a great organi-

zation?

As membership chairman of our chamber for the past few years I get

asked quite frequently what makes our organization special or different

from other chambers of commerce or networking groups?

My answer is simple and sincere; the members and all that they do!

When I joined the chamber 3 years ago I saw a chance to help energize

the group by helping grow the membership and enhance some of our events. I have to say I am

very pleased to see how things have gone and how everyone gets involved volunteering for

committees and attending events.

We have added events to our already impressive calendar such as “The Young Professionals

Group” networking dinner and our 1st ever Memorial Day, Jersey Shore Kickoff party which

was simulcast live over the internet from Klein’s Tiki Bar on Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

These events will only get better, trust me!

Some of our other successful signature events are our Annual Golf Tournament and some

big events coming up, Summer BBQ at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como, which is our big schol-

arship fundraiser on August 20, and the 30th Annual Golden Osprey Awards Dinner at Jumping

Brook Country Club in October and the Holiday Gala (and installation of officers) at Barlow’s

of Sea Girt in December.

We cannot thank you enough for making our Coffee Connector breakfast every Wednes-

day morning the place to be. Our average attendance at this weekly event is now over 40 or

double what it was a few years ago. Add that to our increased attendance at our First Monday

networking night and the very popular “Women in Business” networking events and you can

see how much opportunity there is to show off your business and meet some great people.

The one thing that truly sets us apart as a group though is the comradery I see at all the

different events. No matter where we go and what our group does, seeing everyone smiling,

laughing, having a good time and doing business with one another is really special. We are not

just a business group, we are a big family! And for that I thank each and every one of you for

helping make this chamber special.

Sincerely,

Drew Anlas

JSCC 13th Annual Golf Outing

This year’s outing, held at the Pine Barrens Golf Club, was a morn-

ing event, beginning with a delicious breakfast at 6:30 am followed

by a Shotgun Tee Off at 8:00 am.

The Pine Barren Golf Club provided just enough challenge without

taking away from the fun on a gorgeous golf course. Foursomes en-

joyed the company of new and old friends and some old-fashioned

competition with our Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests.

A big thank you to the attentive golf club staff that made sure a good

day was had by all.

As lunch was served the awards were given out; all winners went home with great prizes donated by generous sponsors,

members and the JSCC. There was an opportunity to win door prizes and no one left empty handed, as there were goodie

bags for all.

Dangers of Formaldehyde and Indoor Air Quality in the Home

Formaldehyde is a Hot Topic in the news. If you haven’t seen 60-Minutes Lum-

ber Liquidators piece on Health and Safety Violations associated with Formal-

dehyde; you need to watch it right now! Your family’s health could be at stake!

What You Should Know About Formaldehyde?

Just about everyone is exposed to small quantities of Formaldehyde in air,

some foods we eat and in products we use. In fact, small amounts of formalde-

hyde are produced naturally by plants, animals and humans. But it’s the use of

formaldehyde in the production of resins that bind many of the wood products

in our homes that is of particular concern. The US Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) is a great resource.

Is My Home’s Indoor Air Quality at Risk?

When building materials such as wood floors, plywood and resins; furniture; carpeting and household products off-gas in-

side the home, formaldehyde levels can reach dangerous levels. Formaldehyde is a colorless flammable gas that does ini-

tially have a distinct pungent aroma to the trained investigator. But Formaldehyde quickly breaks down in air making it dif-

ficult to detect where it can take years for new building materials to totally off-gas.

Formaldehyde Health Effects

Some of the more common health effects from low level exposure to Formaldehyde are eye, nasal cavity, and throat irrita-

tion and neurological effects. Coughing, wheezing, chest pains, and bronchitis have also been reported. High levels of for-

maldehyde exposure are associated with reproductive issues, changes in lung function and eczema (inflamed / irritated

skin). Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen supported by inhalation studies. The Agency for Toxic Substances & Dis-

ease Registry (ATSDR) has detailed information of Formaldehyde health effects.

What can I do?

If you suspect you are being exposed to Formaldehyde, engaging a qualified Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) professional to per-

form an IAQ investigation may be needed. They will interview the occupants, assess building materials and contents and

take air and / or bulk material testing and followup with a detailed report of findings with recommended courses of action.

How do I get relief?

The quickest way to get relief is to remove your-

self from the premises and start ventilating the

home. If no relief is obtained and you still experi-

ence ill health effects, removing suspect materials

may be your only option.

Do You Have More Formaldehyde Ques-

tions?

Does your family have persistent respiratory or

other health issues that you suspect may be com-

ing from Formaldehyde? An investigation by a

qualified IAQ Firm such as GreenWorks Environ-

mental, LLC would be helpful in determining your

next move. Call one of their Environmental Advi-

sors at (732) 223-2073 to help you get the an-

swers you are looking for.

Leverage Your Membership with the

Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce

Here are three ways to leverage your JSCC Membership to better

your business and the community.

Membership in the Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce provides your business with powerful tools to mar-ket your services, reach potential clients, and foster positive economic development in the communities where you live and work. Joining the JSCC is about more than attending General Membership Meetings. Here are three hot tips for making your membership dollars work for you: Contribute to our newsletter and have your article reach our entire email database….all for FREE. By writing articles in the quarterly JSCC Southern Exposure Newsletter, your words of wisdom will reach the entire JSCC email database. This is a surefire way to leverage your membership dollars and market your industry know-how to a friendly audience that you will meet again. Articles with an awareness or education focus can be forwarded to clients who need your services, providing endless opportunity to work with the existing membership to reach your ideal customer. Hosting a “Business After-Hours” is the lowest cost solution for bringing customers through your door. One of the benefits to JSCC membership is the opportunity to host a “business after-hours” gathering that is broadcast to members with plan-ning advice provided by the Chamber. There is simply no more inexpensive way to create advertising, broadcast a message, and reach a willing and enthusiastic audience. What would you pay to have 30 – 70 potential customers in front of you at once? Joining the JSCC allows the Chamber to flourish and provides an important business incubator for startups and entrepre-neurs. Let’s face it, the past two years have proven that we all share the same national economy. Whether your business has 300 employees or you are the “chief cook and bottle washer,” a vibrant chamber allows startups the best opportunity to reach customers, test their business models and grow into success. Your chamber membership is about more than reaching customers. Even the largest of companies in our area can do their part in supporting the community around them.

JERSEY SHORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOLDS ANNUAL BUSINESS EXPO

Sizzlin’ Summer Business Expo 2015

The Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce Sizzlin’ Summer Business Expo 2015 was a great success. With over 300 people

walking through the doors, each participating vendor had maximum exposure. The Expo was held at Jumping Brook Coun-

try Club in Neptune, NJ. Over fifty area businesses set up tables at the Expo, each offering information about their services,

as well as handing out giveaways and offering chances to win fabulous door prizes. Several local restaurants donated deli-

cious food, providing attendees with a sampling of their fare. The restaurants provided a plethora of culinary dishes as well

as plenty of desserts and a cash bar offering a variety of beverages.

One Grand Prize winner picked exclusively from the JSCC Member Exhibitors won a free membership to the Chamber for

2015. This year’s winner was Linda Talbot of kearny bank. All attendees had a chance to win the Grand Prize of a 40” Flat

Screen HD TV, which was won by Lowe’s Express. A special thank you to Optimum Health Chiropractic for sponsoring this

grand prize. We had over 30 door prizes donated from our members, as well as a $2500 advertising package from Greater

Media which was won by World Financial Group. Last but not least a Taste of the Jersey Shore Gift Basket. The basket was

filled with wines from Spirit of ̀ 76 Wines & Liquors and gift certificates from all the food exhibitors participating at the

Expo and was won by our own Tom Froehlich. Thanks to all of our members who donated such amazing door prizes.

Thank you to our special Guest Emcee, Doug Sjonvall of Greater Media WRAT 95.9/WJRZ who kept the atmosphere fes-

tive and the energy high. And special thanks to Joe Sharp of All is Sharp Photography for capturing all the great moments

in pictures. Their participation added great fun to our event. A special thank you to all of our Sponsors, Alcoeur Gardens,
