MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANIZING TEAM

Dear Friends,

It is our pleasure to invite you to 'Innovation, Startups and Social Impact: Strengthening the Ecosystem', a joint initiative by i-TIC Foundation of IIT Hyderabad and Action For India (AFI). This is an engaging dialogue among distinguished private, public, and social sector leaders to identify opportunities and address the challenges often faced by innovators seeking to scale up their social enterprises. This initiative focuses on bringing together inputs for designing a leading social entrepreneurship accelerator at IIT Hyderabad.

We, at IIT Hyderabad and AFI, collectively believe that it is an exciting time for the social entrepreneurship ecosystem with so many innovators setting the stage for a growing worldwide movement. The social entrepreneurs are the game changers who are setting the rules of today’s world riddled with its complexity and nuances. These bold efforts warrant the creation of an enabling environment for the social entrepreneurs to thrive and reach new heights.

It is a privilege to note that India is increasingly becoming a fertile ground for this new stage of the intermingling of technology and social causes. The available resources and success of social enterprises have attracted attention from across the world.

However, there are certain challenges faced by social enterprises on their way to success which must be addressed at an early stage to allow functional growth and development. With this proposed accelerator, we will collectively try to support social enterprises on their technology based innovations in the healthcare, agriculture, and education sectors. Through this initiative, IIT Hyderabad and AFI, intend to identify high-potential social enterprises and provide a supportive system to help them in their scaling journeys. In this partnership, IIT Hyderabad’s in-depth expertise in technology and innovation will complement AFI’s rich experience in working with the leading social entrepreneurs of the country for nearly a decade.

By playing a more direct role in these scaling journeys, we hope to realize our eventual goal of creating impact unicorns over the next few years, who can in turn have an uplifting effect on the lives of people at the Bottom of the Pyramid.

We would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to our partners – T-Hub, RICH, and SVP and our sponsor, CtrlS Datacenter, without whom this initiative would have not been possible.

We sincerely hope that you are able to explore the full potential of the event and the upcoming accelerator program as an opportunity to network, collaborate and build lasting partnerships with technocrats, corporates, investors, and government representatives.

Warm Regards,

Team i-TIC Foundation & AFI

ABOUT ACTION FOR INDIA (AFI)

Action For India’s mission is to help social innovators in India overcome barriers to scale and achieve greater impact at the Bottom of the Pyramid. AFI connects social innovators with impact investors, mentors, technology resources, government contacts, and local partners. Launched in 2012, AFI is headquartered in New Delhi, India and has a chapter in the Silicon Valley, California, USA. AFI Annual Forums

The AFI Annual Forum is our flagship vehicle to support social entrepreneurs. This exclusive, invitation-only event that brings together 100 leading social entrepreneurs, along with 100 “influencers” drawn from the impact investment, philanthropy, government, technology, and public policy sectors. Since 2012, we have organized seven annual forums in Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai. At the Annual Forums, social entrepreneurs have the opportunity to build on their knowledge and skills, as well as gain from conversations, discussions, mentorship, partnership and networking opportunities with industry leaders.

AFI Silicon Valley Challenge Trek / Silicon Valley Chapter / Silicon Valley Leadership Circle The Silicon Valley Challenge (SVC) is an annual business plan competition that selects high-potential social enterprises from India for an immersive, experiential learning program held in Silicon Valley, California. AFI has designed and conducted five SVC Treks, a two week intensive trip to the Silicon Valley for competitively selected set of India’s leading social innovators to connect them with the top investors, entrepreneurs and executives of the Valley. The Treks enable Social entrepreneurs to raise money, identify technology partners and connect with Mentors. It is also responsible for building a strong Silicon Valley Leadership Circle – a distinguished group of investors, entrepreneurs, executives and academics who are interested in fostering links between Silicon Valley and India’s most promising social ventures. AFI Social Enterprise Advisory Services (SEAS) The AFI Social Enterprise Advisory Services (SEAS) is a comprehensive set of advisory services, interventions, information sharing, and face-to-face meetings designed to connect social entrepreneurs (SEs) with sources of funding, mentors, technology resources, government representatives and customers. Over the past seven years, through its work in organizing the AFI Forum as well as organizing the Silicon Valley Challenge and Trek, AFI has had a close view of the challenges and opportunities that SEs face. Based on this insight, AFI created SEAS and this package of interventions to assist selected social entrepreneurs in scaling their business operations. The main objective of SEAS is to work continuously, year-round with a set of social entrepreneurs and get them investment ready or the next round of funding. We do this by reviewing the social enterprise business plans, help fill gaps in their top management teams, and help connect them with revenue generating customers or government contacts. AFI Impact Investment Fund The AFI Impact Investment Fund is being established with the objective of making investments in early stage social enterprises at the intersection of technology (e.g., AI, ML, Big Data, analytics) and sector impact (e.g., healthcare, agriculture, education). The Fund will address the need for capital in these key areas to build and provide comprehensive support to help promising social enterprises attain their full potential. One of the differentiators for the Fund is the emphasis on leveraging the Indian diaspora in Silicon Valley, including their capital, their technology domain expertise, and their company building skills. We are currently finalizing the administrative and legal fund structure, and we expect to make the first investment in 2019. Please find attached a two page overview of the Fund.
