May - June 2014 Dear Friends, On Shavuot we commemorate the events of the Revelation at Mount Sinai. We have a custom to read the profound and moving Book of Ruth on the second day of Shavuot. What is the connection between the story of Ruth and the giving of the Torah? As a righteous convert to Judaism, Ruth the Moabitess brought a fresh and unique perspec- tive to her Jewish experience. As her future husband Boaz told her, Ruth’s journey to Ju- daism opened the eyes of all born Jews. She enabled them for the first time, to see them- selves from outside themselves. When one is born into something, it is not by choice, but simply a fact of their birth. Anything that is foisted upon someone through circumstance and fate is lacking in personal choice and involvement. When one is born into Judaism, it simply becomes an existential reality for them. It becomes for them a fact of birth and a fact of life! When one is born outside of Judaism and makes a journey of self-discovery and search to become Jewish, they truly appreciate the gift and uniqueness of being Jewish. This gift and uniqueness may be lost to a born Jew, who tends to take it all for granted, be- cause it was simply granted to them by Hashem. The Book of Ruth is read on Shavuot in order to re-connect us with the essence of what it means to accept the Torah anew and commit ourselves to a relationship with Hashem. It is through the eyes and heart of the amazing Ruth, that we are truly able to fully appreciate this magnificent gift that has been given to us. We are able to see ourselves anew through the eyes of Ruth. May Ruth continue to inspire us and to re-energize us! Dear Friends,

On Shavuot we commemorate the events of the Revelation at Mount Sinai. Wehave a custom to read the profound and moving Book of Ruth on the second dayof Shavuot. What is the connection between the story of Ruth and the giving ofthe Torah?

As a righteous convert to Judaism, Ruth the Moabitess brought a fresh and unique perspec-tive to her Jewish experience. As her future husband Boaz told her, Ruth’s journey to Ju-daism opened the eyes of all born Jews. She enabled them for the first time, to see them-selves from outside themselves. When one is born into something, it is not by choice, butsimply a fact of their birth. Anything that is foisted upon someone through circumstanceand fate is lacking in personal choice and involvement. When one is born into Judaism, itsimply becomes an existential reality for them. It becomes for them a fact of birth and afact of life! When one is born outside of Judaism and makes a journey of self-discovery andsearch to become Jewish, they truly appreciate the gift and uniqueness of being Jewish. This gift and uniqueness may be lost to a born Jew, who tends to take it all for granted, be-cause it was simply granted to them by Hashem.

The Book of Ruth is read on Shavuot in order to re-connect us with the essence of what itmeans to accept the Torah anew and commit ourselves to a relationship with Hashem. It isthrough the eyes and heart of the amazing Ruth, that we are truly able to fully appreciatethis magnificent gift that has been given to us. We are able to see ourselves anew throughthe eyes of Ruth. May Ruth continue to inspire us and to re-energize us!

With blessings and good wishes,Rabbi Dovid Kaplan

Q. Why is Shavuot only one day (two in the Diaspora) as opposed to Passover and Suc-cot? Isn't it a very important celebration of G-d giving us the Torah?

A. Nachmanides has an explanation that is really quite astonishing - he writes that Sha-vuot is actually the last (and eighth) day of the Pesach holiday. The idea is truly beautiful.Pesach, which represents physical freedom, is not sufficient. It must be coupled with spiri-tual goals and ideals represented by the Giving of the Torah at Shavuot. The Maharal ofPrague explains that the number seven represents the physical world with a natural cycleof physicality and spirituality combined together. The number eight, on the other hand, represents pure spirituality. Seven is the number of the days of Pesach, the physi-cal leaving from Egypt, but the true culmination of that exodus was when the Jewish Peo-ple stood at Sinai and received the Torah from G-d. In effect it means that Shavuot is notreally just one day at all - it is the completion of the cycle that began at Pesach.
