Message from the University Librarian

Very seldom do you get a chance to see a library migrating to a new system. And yet this summer, all of the 8 UCG libraries will complete a yearlong process and migrate their library’s online systems to a cloud based shared system.

On July 17th, all 8 university library systems along with the HKALL system moved into the same system within the same platform. We believe this system migration will allow the 8 UGC libraries to initiate more deep collaborations to enhance and streamline our technical processing.

You should have no difficulties searching for library resources, borrowing materials, looking up journal articles or requesting items via HKALL from other UGC libraries. However, with a brand new system, there may be some unexpected bugs or unanticipated issues. Please, let us know as soon as possible so that we can address them ASAP. If you use other UGC libraries, you may need to check to see if you need to re-register your JULAC card when you go to that library.

Faculty and students who are used to the previous library system may encounter some initial differences that may cause some confusion or inconvenience initially. We have scheduled many workshops and prepared many online guides to ease the transition. Library staff is standing by at the Information Commons and Circulation Counter to provide you with demo as well.

Let us know how you do or don’t like the new system. Every suggestion you share with us gives us an opportunity to improve library services. We hope that you will notice some of the improvements we have made this summer, based on your comments from the annual library survey. http://www.library.ln.edu.hk/about/contact-us

New Services/ FacilitiesNew Library System - New 1-Search

More than just a library catalogue, the new 1-Search integrates the HKALL (Hong Kong Academic Library Link), the old 1-Search (searching journal articles) and Lingnan Digital Commons into one system. We hope that the new system will let users have better searching experience by avoiding the duplication of searching different catalogues and databases.

We created a new guide to help you to under the new system.

We will organize training sessions in term one of 2017. If you have any questions/ problems in using the new 1-Search, please feel free to contact our professional librarians at: 2616 8571/ [email protected].

2017 Library User Satisfaction Survey

New Library Logo

Thank you very much for your participation. We are delighted to tell you that we once again obtain a record high overall scores this year, 3.96 in a 5-points scale. Computing Equipment and Photocopiers were the top two items that had the biggest increase (5.2% and 4.9%) this year. We are happy to see very positive feedback in this area. We know that they are important facilities for our users particularly for students. We

In April 2017, the Library launched a new Library logo to update our brand identity. The new logo incorporates the Lingnan red and grey colour. The double “L” represents Lingnan Library. The pixels on

have been constantly enhancing our services in this area. For the detail of the survey result :

the top right hand corner shares our important insight towards the future trend on the importance of digital resources. We believe the new look better matches what we’ve become as a provider of modernized resources to support Lingnan’s research and studying needs.

“Flying Dreams in a Wheelchair Art Exhibition” from Ethnic Minority student Mohammad Moavia by Hong Kong Red Cross Margaret Trench School

The Ethnic Minority student Mohammad Moavia is confined to a wheelchair, but it does not restrict him from creating art and writing. His paintings tell us how truth, goodness and beauty people can be. The opening ceremony and sharing session were held on 9 March as one of the Lingnan University Equal Opportunities week’s programs. In the sharing session, Moavia had a short photoshop drawing demonstration and shared about how he chases his dream with supports from his family, friends and school.

Celebrating: Research at Lingnan (15 March 2017)Our Library supports and encourages the knowledge sharing

culture in the Lingnan Community. We invited Prof. Geng Cui and Prof. Preet Hiradhar to introduce their new books to the Lingnan community. The book edited by Prof. Geng Cui and Prof. T. S. Chan, is about the Asian Businesses in today’s world. The book written by Prof. Andrew Goatly and Prof. Preet Hiradhar is a useful textbook for beginners without any linguistic background.

Booktalk at Library: 《金庸:從香港到世界》

We invited Mr. Matthew Cheng to give us a talk on 20 April, as he has edited a book exploring the relationship between "Jin Yong novels" and Hong Kong social development. Many other commentaries are focused on the text analysis, yet Mr. Cheng's work focuses on examining the Chinese martial arts culture implied in Jin Yong’s novels and explored it from the perspectives of gender and nationalism.

Visual Studies- Philosophy of Architecture Student Art Exhibition (10 April-18 May 2017) The art exhibition is about the combination of

architecture and culture that beyond one’s imagination. Students were required to integrate the knowledge acquired from the course “Philosophy of Architecture”, such as perspective and proportion concepts, to create a unique architectural work. Various materials, including foam board and rice paper, and computer skills were used. When the visitors were enjoying the arts, they had a chance to think out-of-the-box, like the Visual Studies- Philosophy of Architecture students.
