Messages From Your Principal
Helping Children To Learn Well Term 2 Week 2 2014
Dear Parents and Friends of Albion Park Rail Public School
What a fantastic Camp Week we have had! Our Stage 2 and 3 students and staff experienced a fun
filled week. There were many highlights, each and every student will have experienced something
they will talk about for a long time.
Thank you to our dedicated School Learning Support Officers who shopped for and prepared all the
food, served with style! A huge thank you to Lorena Gee who joined both stages at Camp, and to
Cathy Levy and Kay Prothero who ably assisted with the preparation and serving. We couldn't do it
without you!
I am immensely proud of the Camping Program we are able to offer our students at Albion Park Rail
Public School. It is unique amongst our community of schools as it is a "real camping experience" .
The staff are dedicated to offering our students this fantastic opportunity every year. Sometimes it is
the first time your children have spent a night away from home. It is great for their confidence, social
development and also a fantastic learning experience.
NAPLAN
A reminder to parents that the NAPLAN assessment process will occur next Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday. Students are advised to stay calm throughout the tasks and try and get a good night’s rest
between each assessment. Staff will be on hand to make sure all students manage the process well.
In May 2014 the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be
completed by all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. These assessments will be conducted
from 13th to 15th May 2014. Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) and
Writing will be held on Tuesday 13th May, Reading on Wednesday 14th May and Numeracy on
Thursday 15th May. The Friday is normally set aside as a catch up day for students who missed the
other assessment days. Some students will be exempted from the assessment process due to significant
need or parent request. If you have any concerns, please see your class teacher.
School Hats
Sun safe policy states that all students should be encouraged to wear a suitable hat. It is school policy
that hats are worn properly and not worn in class or during inside activities. As part of our uniform
policy, all students are required to wear the school hat, when playing outdoors. The policy of No Hat,
No Play is enforced in accordance with our Uniform Policy. Surf hats or other logo hats are not a
component of our school uniform. The school hat is our uniform!
All school hat orders have now been delivered. As of Monday 12th May, the black school hat is our
school uniform. Our new sports hat has been ordered, and hopefully will arrive soon. You will also
notice a sample new shirt design in our school foyer. Please let us know what you think. We have
already had many positive comments.
I will be taking some leave over the next few weeks. Glenn Southwell and Phil Maitland will be
sitting in the chair ensuring all will be running smoothly.

Wollongong Public School in Years 5 and 6. It is a two year
placement program. There is NO provision to apply for Year 6
placement.
Offers for opportunity class placement will be made on the basis
of the Opportunity Class Placement Test, school assessment, and
where necessary, other evidence of academic merit.
More information and on line application forms are available at
www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement

Applications Close: Friday 16th May 2014
Test Date: Wednesday 23rd July 2014
On Monday it was Stage 2’s Camp at Shoalhaven Heads Caravan Park. We got on the bus at 9am. When we got
there we got our stuff and went to the campgrounds. The teachers showed us how to set up our tents. When we
finished setting up the tents we put our stuff inside the tent. Some people had to help others set up their tents.
When we finished that, we went for a swim in the pool. We had to take a test for who could swim in the deep
end. Most people got a yellow band for their wrist, and others got a blue band. After that we had lunch. When we
finished lunch we went for a bushwalk to the beach. When we got back we had dinner and watched a movie
called The Wild before bedtime.
On Day 2 we got up and went fishing. No one caught a fish but we got heaps of bites. Then we
went swimming again. After swimming we played with the sports equipment and the jumping
pillow. We had dinner and watched another movie called Surf’s Up before bed.
On the last morning we got up and had to pack up our stuff. When we finished we went sand
modelling on the beach. Then we got on the bus and went home at 2pm. So that’s my camp. I
can’t wait for next year’s camp in Year 5.

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party - Friday 23rd May 2014
This year Albion Park Rail Public School will be raising money for the Illawarra Cancer Carers by having a
Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for the students in Week 4 on Friday 23rd May 2014.
The Illawarra Cancer Carers have been in the Illawarra for 21 years and is a 100% volunteer organisation which
supports cancer patients, provides patient transport and supports Wollongong Cancer Research. In past years our
school has sadly lost some students and teachers from cancer.
We ask you to please encourage your child(ren) to:
Wear a MAD, CRAZY HAT on Friday 23rd May 2014
Bring their favourite morning tea to share with their class
Bring a gold coin donation
Students will go to the Primary Cola and place their gold coin on the outline of a morning tea cup which will be
drawn on the ground. This will be a great day and I’m sure our students will feel proud that they have contributed
to such a worthy charity. Thank you for your support.

FIRE & RESCUE NSW ANNUAL OPEN DAY
Fire & Rescue NSW is hosting its Annual Open Day on Saturday 17 May 2014
between 10am and 2pm.
Children and their parents are invited to watch fire safety demonstrations, hop
aboard our station’s fire truck, hold a fire hose and get an information bag while
chatting with firefighters about what they do.
This is a fantastic opportunity for children and their parents to meet their local firefighters and learn
about fire safety in the home.
Winter is just around the corner and it’s the worst time of the year for house fires, so this is a great
opportunity to learn as much as you can about home fire safety.
So come and see us at Station 207 located at 180 Princes Highway, Albion Park Rail.
There’s plenty of parking behind The Bike Hub across the road!
Regards
Your Local Firies
