TAMMY BERTRAND Director

Foundation Facts

Isn’t it wonderful that we have been given the amazing opportunity to receive our vaccinations and protect ourselves from a deadly virus that shut down the world for over a year? I finally feel like I can breathe again and am thrilled to be able to get back out and be with family and friends. We are extremely lucky to have the option to protect ourselves and those we love, as well as those we don’t even know. Is there any better example of “Love they neighbor” than that?

I hope you all had an opportunity to join us outside in May for the 1st Annual Wesleyan Village Classic Car Show. We were blessed with a perfect weather day and ended up with more cars than we had parking spaces! There was such an amazing

variety of cars to look at including the large selection of Model A’s brought to us from our own Norm Ingold and his Model A Club. Wonderful food trucks, great live music, a visit from Mayor Whitfield and free ice cream treats courtesy of the new Elmer’s Ice Cream topped off a great event!

I am excited to announce that Brian Sheetz, the manager of the Wesleyan Senior Living Foundation Endowment Fund and Annuity Fund has generously donated a day of his time to come out to both Wesleyan Village and Wesleyan Meadows to do an informational event on planned giving options. If you are looking to invest in a gift that pays you back or have been thinking about making a future gift through your life insurance or will, Brian can help explain the benefits of all these options. These type of gifts, made to the Foundation for the Life Care Fund, come with an invitation to join the Mary Lilly Society as well. Brian will be here on July 21st so let me know if we should reserve a seat for you.

After a long break we will be starting up our Mary Lilly Society social events with the return of the Mary Lilly Society Annual Luncheon in October.

This will be a nice opportunity for our long term members to get reacquainted as well as introduce our new ones! We will have a delicious lunch, compliments of our wonderful dining staff, with live music and some special surprises. What a nice way to honor our founder’s memory and carry on her legacy of helping others.

I hope to announce our new board members to all of you very soon. We have put out an invitation to three outstanding candidates with years of experience in Lorain County both professionally and in their community support. These people will join the Wesleyan Senior Living Board in order to promote and build the Foundation funds so that our ability to maintain the Wesleyan Promise remains strong.

Please enjoy the fresh air, warm weather and your friends within our community. How happy it makes me to see people walk by my door everyday on their way to bingo, or to play pool before dinner, or to take advantage of any of the many fun events Activities has planned for you. Feel free to stop in anytime to say hello!

We LOVE our volunteers!

*Thanks to Leadership Lorain County for their amazing volunteer work on the Beacon House gardens! Our memory care residents and their families appreciate their efforts!

This time of year brings back the words of the old song by Nat King Cole, “Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, those days of soda and pretzels and (root)beer.” It brings back memories of the past and the anticipation of making memories for

the future. As the campuses of Wesleyan Village and Wesleyan Meadows move past the memories of the past year’s pandemic, we express thankfulness to God for the staff and resident of Wesleyan. Together we have weathered the storm and have begun to get back to some kind of normal within spiritual life at the Wesleyan. The Meadows recently gathered together for a good old fashion Hymn Sing and Sunday Services in Wesleyan Chapel are now open to all residents and the surrounding community who have been vaccinated. Weekly devotionals have now resumed on all the healthcare floors and our two memory units, Beacon House and Light House. This fall we will begin offering in-person Bible Study and other opportunities

to nurture faith and spiritual life at Wesleyan. We will come together to remember all that we have been through during this last year and a half and remember the lives who have passed on. God tells us that throughout all the ups and downs in our lives, and beyond, we are not alone. God is with us, not just in the spirit, but through the eyes, hands and feet of those around us. There is no where we can go, that God is not present in our lives. Psalm 139 describes it so well. “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” God is with us all.

Chaplain Kurt Walker

As summer gets into full swing, we are once again enjoying life as we did prior to the COVID pandemic. Vaccinated individuals may come and go without a mask. Kids can once again play sports and interact with each other at a playground. Normalcy is creeping back into our lives!

While we focus on returning to our previous routines, I believe we have also created some new norms that we can embrace and continue to utilize in our everyday lives. Look at how mindful we all have become when it comes to washing our hands and cleaning our cell

phones, doorknobs and keyboards. We are also now more mindful of maintaining a safe distance when meeting new individuals. Our new heightened sense of our surroundings, as well as our need to maintain a clean life style, are definitely things we should all plan on keeping and practicing in our lives.

Here at Wesleyan we continue to execute the best practices we learned during COVID into our everyday routines. Not only did we purchase and utilize state of the art sprayers for sanitation, we increased our focus on sanitizing high touch areas where it is more likely for germs and infections to live and spread. In addition to that, we analyzed and increased the filtration of the air that flows through our building. We also considered the social and emotional impact COVID had on our residents and their family members. We introduced programs such as ZOOM, and apps such as Facetime, to our residents and families to allow us to continue visitations while we all lived in lockdown. We also took into

consideration that our staff was greatly impacted by the pandemic. We felt it was very important to increase the level of education and communication with our staff on topics such as infection control and resident rights. At Wesleyan we will take the positive changes grown out of the COVID pandemic to continue to improve the quality of care we provide for our residents, staff, and all of their families.

I ask you to look at things in a different light when you are asked to comply with the ongoing requirements from the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services. Practices such as signing in at our kiosk in the lobby, wearing a mask when going to visit your loved one, and sanitizing your hands frequently throughout the day are all things may not have been required before, but past practices prove they help us protect our residents and staff. As always if you have a compliment, a suggestion to better ourselves, or a concern you would like to voice please feel free to contact me directly!

“Once Upon A Time”

“Once Upon A Time” there lived an elderly lady whose home was on E. Second Street in Elyria. She saw other elderly women living alone and struggling financially and physically. Mary thought something could and should be done to improve the lives of those elderly ladies. So Mary found and rented a rambling old building on E. Second Street with just that in mind. She invited those “old ladies” living on her street to pool their resources and live together in a much more comfortable and secure environment than they had lived in for many years. Mary Lilly became the supervisor, cook, janitor and matron, drawing upon her own resources to cover any deficits in running expenses. Mary was determined to show the need for such an institution in Elyria. Now 125 years later, that tradition continues as Wesleyan Village has grown into

the largest continuing care retirement community in Lorain County, with 400 residents and staff, over 17 acres—right alongside the Black River. From Independent Living to Long Term Care and everything in-between, Wesleyan Village remains a Beacon as a Faith-Based, Non-Profit Organization--continuing Mary’s Promise to provide shelter and care for its’ residents, even if they outlive their funds.

How do you know when it is time to downsize or to start searching for senior housing for your next chapter? Here are some questions to ask yourself:

* You spend too much time on home maintenance and/or some of the tasks may become too difficult or even pose a threat to your overall health due to chronic conditions or mobility issues you’re facing.

* You haven’t used some of the rooms in years or are connected by stairs that are too difficult to use properly.

* You would like to save some money. Upkeep, taxes, and big-ticket repairs can quickly add up and deplete your savings account.

* You need to reduce your stress and enjoy more free time & travel.

* You would like a peace of mind for your future needs.

Wesleyan Village is a wonderful community with wonderful residents living wonderful lives.

A GIFT TO BE REMEMBERED

Jan and Truus van Galen were Dutch immigrants who came to America after World War II. They came here with just about nothing, except the will to work hard, study hard and become citizens. Mr. van Galen taught a variety of languages while Mrs. van Galen shared her artistic talents as art teacher.

The van Galen’s were some of the first residents to call Wesleyan Meadows home in the late 1990’s. During their many years here they made lasting impressions on all who knew them. Mr. van Galen had a marvelous personality, warm smile and a love of music. All things he shared with those he encountered. Mrs. van Galen found joy in her gardens and teaching residents of The Meadows how to paint beautiful pictures. You’ll find her painting of pink rhododendrons

prominently displayed in the arts and crafts room where she spent so much of her time.

Upon their passing, the van Galen Trust bequeathed a generous gift that was to be used to modernize, redecorate and refurbish the Wesleyan Meadows Community Center. The refurbishment is now complete.

A Dedication Ceremony and Open House will be held on Thursday, August 5th 4pm-6:30pm at the Wesleyan Meadows Community Center.

Please join us in celebrating and remembering Jan and Truus van Galen. Kindly RSVP to Tracey Murphy 440-934-9400 x4712 or [email protected]

The weather put a damper on our convertible parade outdoors but we moved the fun inside and had a great party! This party centered around Walt’s 107th birthday

so we celebrated him and the six other Centenarians we have the honor of living here at Wesleyan Village! Mayor Whitfield came by to deliver a few words of

wisdom and present all our 100 year old residents with a Proclamation from the City of Elyria. An honor guard presentation by the American Legion, in honor of Walt’s military service in the US Air Force, which raised Walt from his scooter to put his hand over his heart. We all enjoyed lots of games, food and music that rounded

out this wonderful celebration.

Congratulations to our honorees:Walt Westermann, Marian Van Valkenberg, Marie Archer, Vera Hughes, Maxine Linn,
