Dear all...Easter is why I am a Vicar. I see the Easter story mirrored in our day to day lives and I am full of hope and expectation for us. The Easter story has despair, betrayal, death, and sadness, transformed by a new hope. Our lives so often have despair, betrayal, death, and sadness, that it is easy to see that story in the world around us today. We all have our cross to carry, and for some the burden is heavy. But the Easter story does not end in despair.

Today, in our lives and the lives of people around us, resurrection hope is very real. God is always working to bring about transformation, a new and different life for us, a life with resurrection possibilities. A new hope. God does not impose it upon us; he offers it to us gently. It is not proclaimed loudly to be obeyed by all; rather it is whispered to a grieving woman in the Easter garden, and offered to us gently and softly.

We cannot have our old life back, but what we are offered is a new life, new possibilities, not restricted by our imaginations but open to the security and confidence of God’s plans for us. Look out for the signs of resurrection in your life and those around you, and welcome them. Alleluia!

Easter Blessings

New BishopThe Venerable Julian Henderson has been appointed to be the next Bishop of Blackburn, and will be consecrated at York Minister later this year. The Archdeacon is currently based at the Diocese of Guildford, covering most of Surrey and part of Hampshire. The Diocese cathedral is Guildford Cathedral and the bishop is the Bishop of Guildford. It is part of the Province of Canterbury.

Here are a few facts about our new Bishop:• The Archdeacon is 58 and was born in 1954.• Educated at Keble College Oxford he became an ordained Deacon in 1979 and a priest in 1980.• From 1979 to 1983 he was Curate at Islington St Mary; Diocese of London.• From 1983 to 1992 he was Vicar of Emmanuel and St Mary in the Castle in Hastings;

Diocese of Chichester.• From 1992 to 2005 he was Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Claygate; Diocese of Guildford,

where he was also Rural Dean of Emly from 1996 to 2001.• Since 2005 he has been Archdeacon of Dorking.• He has also been Honorary Canon of Guildford Cathedral from 2002.• He is currently chair of the Church of England General Synod Business Committee.• He also supports The Limpsfield Trust which works to provide fun activity holidays for

young people from across the UK from all backgrounds.

Earlier this year, the PCC wrote to the Crown Nominations Committee, in support of a call for the new Bishop to be prepared to ordain women as priests. The following is an extract from the Archdeacon’s letter, which was sent to all parishes when his appointment was announced.

“Until becoming an Archdeacon seven and a bit years ago my ministry had always been in a parish. That is the front line job in the Church of England and my view is that if the local church is fulfilling its calling, then we are able to offer a clear and powerful message to the wider community of what Jesus called ‘ life in all its fullness’.

I will want to encourage the vital work that is going on all round the diocese in the name of Christ, support church leaders, lay and ordained, in their crucial role and get to know you in due course.

I am excited by all the opportunities there are for mission and ministry at this time, not least because we have the Good News of the Gospel to proclaim. It is the power of God for salvation to all who believe. I look forward to sharing in the mission to which God has called us, praying for a fresh wind of His Spirit to blow across the county.”

Archdeacon Henderson, in a recently released press statement, added, “I am in favour of women serving as bishops, and will want to introduce a change in the current diocesan pattern by ordaining women as deacons and priests.”

Our meeting in March was well attended as members were curious to discover what the Revd Linda Macluskie had to say to us about “Crocuses, Cabbages and Corfu”. As she so rightly said, “Lent Reflection” may not have sounded so attractive!

Linda’s theme was about getting the balance right in our lives, time to ‘work, rest and play’, as the old advertisement for the Mars Bar used to say. The crocuses represent ‘rest’, and we heard from scripture (Luke 13:10-17) how Jesus healed on the Sabbath, challenging the hollow, hair-splitting Pharisees who had 1521 things they couldn’t do on that day of the week, including rescuing a drowning man. No, Linda said, the Sabbath is a gift to us from God, a time to be still, to wonder and delight in creation and reflect on our priorities.

The cabbages represent ‘work’, and things we maybe don’t always want to do. We were reminded that the Lord himself came to serve and that his work was to open his arms on the cross for us. As Christians we are commanded to love our neighbour, to forgive and to have mercy. Each person has a ministry and all need to contribute, she said.

With her illustration of Corfu, Linda asked us to consider ‘play’ and reflect on the spontaneity of children who are curious and carefree, hungry for life. ‘The birds of the air’ and the ‘lilies of the field’ (Matthew 6:24-34) are all taken care of by God our Father and, as his children, we too can be assured of that same unconditional freedom and care.

Linda shared jokes to illustrate that laughter is good for us and quotations from writers, including the Christian author C.S. Lewis who said, “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” We prayed together with the response, “Thank-you, playful God”, and were each given a bookmark with a meditation and prayer for Lent. A lovely afternoon, and a timely reminder how to try and get our lives in balance.

Members and friends are reminded that we hold our Coffee Morning on Wednesday 3rd April in the Old Boys’ School, when we try to raise funds for the work of our own church and Mothers’ Union projects at home and overseas. Items to sell on the stall are always greatly appreciated and may be passed on in church or by giving me a call for collection.

Our April meeting is on Wednesday 17th April, when our speaker is the Revd Yolande Burns from Christ Church URC – “An afternoon with Yolande”.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families of two much loved members of Mothers’ Union, Pauline Wood and Violet Lloyd, who have recently died. It was a privilege to have known them and they are greatly missed.

May we continue in this Easter season to ‘work, rest and play’ and live Christ’s risen life in our day-to-day living, for his sake.

with love, Pam Bentley, Enrolling Member

Men’s Group AGMThe Annual General Meeting of the Holy Trinity Men’s Group was held on 11th March. After it, the President, the Revd. Nancy Goodrich gave a talk about her career before entering the Church. First she produced three objects from her working life; a stapler, a paper punch and a calculator.

Nancy’s first job as a girl was selling coal. She used to answer the telephone, and take orders, telling customers such things as ‘5 hundredweight of nuts, no problem’, whilst having no idea what nuts were.

On moving on to university, she had various holiday jobs. One of these was working for ICI (now Zeneca) where she had to enter details of questionnaires on a computer. One old lady answered the question about her sex drive by not ticking the box, as she was supposed to do, but writing ‘chance would be a fine thing’. A favourite job she had was as a waitress at an Italian Restaurant, where she had to learn just who had ordered what.

Following on from University, Nancy did a marketing course where she learned that most businesses failed from lack of financial acumen. She then trained as a Chartered Accountant, working for Price Waterhouse, working in the tax department, completing tax returns. There, she saw how much a bishop gave to charities as they all had to be listed, and how much was given by various very rich people. With travelling time, it was a long day, from 7.45am to 7.30 and later at night. She stayed there for 5 years. At that office, people were either promoted or had to leave, they were not allowed to stand still.

Nancy worked at Swizzell’s sweet factory, where she was financial controller. That job was given up when she married Nigel and moved to the Midlands.

Nancy had various other jobs over the years, including helping Nigel with a Community Shop, before becoming a vicar and moving to Bolton-le-Sands.

Dear friends...As I write this letter it is about ten days to Easter Day. The new Pope, Francis, has just celebrated his inaugural mass in the Vatican and Justin Welby, the new Archbishop of Canterbury was today enthroned in Canterbury Cathedral. Both leaders are in post ready for the Easter celebrations.

This is an important time for the two major Christian denominations. These men have huge tasks ahead of them and need our prayers as they face the challenges in their own denominations and ecumenically.

Although Easter Day is the last Sunday in March, we continue, for another six weeks, to celebrate the season of Easter until Pentecost when, as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and the church was born. And so I wish you all a very Happy Easter !

As we look back over two thousand years we see how the sacrifice made by one man on the cross has influenced the world and the church. The church is Christ’s body here on earth - we are the church! What a mixed bunch of people we are! From east to west, from conservatives to liberals from traditionalists to modernists. We all have our own particular ways of expressing our faith but most importantly we all proclaim one faith. The faith that tells of Jesus Christ who died, was buried and rose again that we might all have the hope of eternal life with God. Continue with your Easter celebrations for:-

Christ is risen – He is risen indeed !Alleluia !

Yolande

EasterAccording to my dictionary, the word ‘Easter’ derives from a German word Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess associated with spring, and whose festival was held at the Vernal Equinox. The following story has both an Easter and a spring feeling to it:

www.bolton-le-sands.co.uk messenger | 11

A Sunday School teacher asked her class if they knew what a miracle was. One little girl put up her hand and said that she had seen one the previous day.

This left the woman rather mystified and she asked Emma to tell them all about it. The little girl then described how she had witnessed baby chicks hatching out of their eggs when she visited her uncle’s farm.

A small miracle maybe, but just one of the many that surround us every day.

Amusing quotes from church magazinesRemember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.

Don’t let worry kill you off – let the Church help.

Miss Charlene Mason sang ‘I will not pass this way again’, giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

“Spring will be a little late this year,” according to the song, which seemed very appropriate for we have had spells of very cold weather this winter. But the weather has improved and we had enough daffodils to make up the bunches for our Mothering Sunday Service. The children gave out the posies and Ellie, Robert and Toby did the readings so well and took the collection.

The Church Garden is looking like spring is on its way too. First the snowdrops appeared and now we have the lovely clumps of yellow polyanthus brightening up the borders.

A BIG THANKYOU to everyone who helped in anyway both with the flowers and also delivering Easter cards round the village.

Ruth

P.S. Going back many many years ago, I remember making up bunches of snowdrops for Mothering Sunday, so it must have been a very cold winter that year! Editor’s note : The song, ‘Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year’ was featured in the 1944 Deanna Durbin film ’Christmas Holiday’. It was written by American songwriter, Frank Loesser (1910-1969), whose many hits included the Broadway musical ‘Guys and Dolls’. He also won an Academy Award for the best song with ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ – another appropriate reference, perhaps!

Bolton-le-Sands WITuesday 12th March was a cold night but this did not prevent lots of people coming to the Community Centre for the February meeting of the WI. We welcomed two guests who will soon be members, and welcomed a guest speaker from Kendal who would astonish us all by his talk on the Pacific Crest Trail-more about that later.

We were given of notice of the forthcoming Group Meeting at Nether Kellet on 23rd April; tickets are £6.50 including light refreshments. We do need more helpers for `our own` Coffee Mornings. The proposed trip to Martin Mere has been postponed due to lack of support, later in the year maybe. There is a lot on offer for anyone interested in Crafts. Judith Spotswood is in charge, you can learn anything from `Getting to know your Sewing Machine`, Cake decorating, patchwork and quilting, and card making. Something for everyone. A special Craft event has been organised for the afternoon of the 21st May in the Community Centre-watch out for this one.

Our speaker was Jim Bishop, a milkman from Kendal, who had hiked The Pacific Crest Trail, 2650 miles - an incredible journey, which he completed in 2008. This is a recognised trail, such as the Pennine Way, but much longer. It stretches through 7 countries and 8 climate zones, from the Mexican Border through to the Canadian border. Forward planning was very important and took about a year to organise permits, locked food boxes (so bears could not get at it) and arrange insurance and antibiotics. On the Trail he encountered some hardships but also many friendships, not least the Trail Angels, who are complete strangers who go out of their way to help Trail Hikers. After lots of `catch up` gossip the meeting ended at about 9.15. Next month we look forward to welcoming back Ken Dagger to talk on “My Entertaining Life”.

Cheers Marian.

Bolton-le-Sands CE Primary School Water AidDuring Lent our House Captains (Year 6) organised a Lent charity appeal to support Water Aid.

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ is a programme that encouraged us all to collect loose change and try to fill a jam jar during Lent. We could give up sweets or do something positive to raise money to fill the jars. The money collected will be used to help children in the world who do not have access to clean water and make a big difference to their lives and health. We will let you know the total after the Easter holiday.

From the Year 6 House Captains.“The problems people here are facing are tough, really tough. Good people - Godly people - understand that God’s love has practical implications: when you see a situation like this, or it’s shown to you, you cannot ignore it, you must help.”Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu

News from the Trefoil GuildAt the February meeting of the Trefoil Guild we had a fascinating talk by Susan Walker. Susan is a Preston girl, who as a young woman decided that there was more to life than being a civil servant. Inspired by her dad talking about his national service in the RAF, she decided to apply for acceptance in the WRAF. Her siblings thought she was crackers even to contemplate going for an interview. No doubt that spurred her on, to at least have a go.

At RAF Henlow in Bedfordshire, in 1974, she was successful in her interview and was accepted for officer training. So off to Cranwell, the RAF college for three months, and she graduated as a pilot officer with a commission in the supply branch of the RAF, supplying anything from fuel, food, clothing to a piece of equipment. To begin learning her job, she was sent to Hereford as an assistant for three months, and from there on to busy Brize Norton on an air movements course for a further three months. Then it was back to Hereford to learn about kitting everyone into uniform.

Next to Brize Norton for two and a half years to learn how to load planes like VC 10’s and Hercules. Promoted to flying officer, she was sent to RAF Binbrook in Lincolnshire to learn about nuclear equipment. Then it was off to RAF Bruggen in Germany for two years with a maintenance unit repairing runways and whatever was required. Whilst there she was able to holiday all over Germany and ski in winter.

In 1981 she was back in Britain with a permanent commission at Newton in Lincolnshire, where the dog handlers are trained. The next two and a half years she was at Cranwell, training cadets on their sixteen week courses. Following that, she was off to Harrogate for three years, manning the Nimrod early warning system with the Ministry of Defence.

As officer commanding supply movement, she went to RAF Waddington for two years, before promotion to Squadron Leader sent her back to Cranwell as senior instructor to supply officers. In 1990 she was the only woman in the Falkland base as staff officer for six months working with the army, where she found the variety of wild life fascinating to watch.

The last four years of her service were spent back at Cranwell, with the personnel selection Officers’ course, becoming the selection training officer. A remarkable twenty two year career for a woman in a man’s world. As she would say “CHOCKS AWAY”. Betty Cottam
