There are forces that direct our lives over which we have little to no control. Governments, workplaces and even denominations pass laws which we may or may not agree with. We press on. Sometimes we are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, for example, waiting to make a turn in our vehicle and the driver behind you does not see in time. Thump! Not much to do about it but press on. Illness and disease find their way into our lives, everything changes, and in the end we have no choice but to press on.

I suppose we could stop living and simply spend our time crying. We could just get stressed out and remain stressed. Anger could be the determining factor on how we proceed, never wanting to let go of past hurts. I don’t know why some people have a knack of letting things go and moving on so much easier than others. It’s ironic, if we could create a universal scale of hurts, that it would be the lesser ones that stick with us longer than the greater ones.

People often say, “Life is all about the little things.” I suppose that depends on whether or not you agree with the scale of hurts we all agreed to. Maybe you

didn’t agree. That’s okay, you are an individual and see things through your eyes only. What is a small event to one person may be a huge deal to you. There is no point in comparing ourselves to each other, we just need to be ourselves. Except, we are not just our selves, we are God’s. God is in each of us and we all ask God to ignore, look past, forget or forgive a whole host of stuff.

I know I have asked God to forgive me for something that I would not forgive in my own life. How many times have I prayed for the maturity of God? Many, many times. The Lord is not withholding it from me, so where lies the problem? It’s not like God chose to forgive my wrong doings, he forgave everyone’s. That’s a level of maturity that seems way beyond our control. It is. That is exactly why we need a savior.

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Youth mission trip setThe 2019 Mission Trip will be in

Milwaukee, WI through Next Step Ministries. This will take place June 30 - July 6, 2019 for 6th through 12th graders. We will be fundraising this spring to help offset cost of trip. If you are are interested please talk to Kevin or Rachel Hinkle.

Musical gifts appreciatedThe first time I had an opportunity to receive a

great blessing to hear Terri Benz playing the organ was on July 29, 2017 for the installation of the new District Superintendent of the LaMoine District. Several months later as Al and I have found a new church home, we are continually blessed at each worship service. Whether she is on the piano or the organ, the inspiration is the same. All of her efforts of directing or playing or singing are second only to her friendliness to new people in town. Her entire family also are a great asset to this church. Cluster Lenten ServicesEveryone is invited to Lenten services sponsored

by our Holy Spokes Cluster at 5:00 pm each Sunday evening. The theme is: “I Am Sayings of Jesus”. Following each service there will be a time of fellowship/refreshments.

Everyone is welcome. All services will be interpreted into American Sign Language for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This year’s offering will be divided between the Jacksonville’s New Directions Warming and Cooling Center and the IGRC UMW’s OUR CONFERENCE – OUR KIDS Campaign. Lenten OfferingPart of our Lenten Offering will be used to support

the Smallwoods who are teachers at Red Bird Christian School in the mountains of Kentucky. Mark is a very talented musician who teaches music and Becky teachers elementary students. Mark will be here at Centenary on April 25 for the Red Bird Choir Concert.

The rest of the offering will go toward the new “Our Conference – Our Kids Campaign”. This campaign by the IGRC (Illinois Great Rivers Conference) will raise money to endow the spiritual life programs of its five child welfare agencies including: Baby Fold, Chaddock, Cunningham, Lessie Bate Davis Neighborhood House, and Spero Family Services.

An envelope was included with the March Messenger. However, any envelope is OK. Just label it Lenten offering. Make checks to “Centenary UMC” with Lenten Offering in the memo line.

Advent offering dividedOur Advent Offering of $790.00 was divided

between Chaddock in Quincy and the Big Brother – Big Sister in Jacksonville. The Mission Committee added enough money so that each will receive $500.

Jacksonville Centenary United Methodist Church will be hosting the Cardinal Singers of Red Bird Christian School in Beverly, Kentucky for a special concert on Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m.. The concert

Cardinal Singers set to perform at Centenary UMC on April 25by the Cardinal Singers is part of an annual Spring Tour that will be stopping in Indiana and Illinois this year.

The concert will include vocal music, drama, and a 24-member dulcimer ensemble. In addition to the musical program, a small display of traditional Appalachian crafts produced in the area of the Mission will be available for purchase. Everyone is invited to this free concert of contemporary and traditional Christian music.

Red Bird Mission is a National Mission Institution in covenant with the United Methodist Women located in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. Red Bird Mission serves the needs of families through a diversity of programs, including a pre K-12 school with approximately 230 students.

We will be serving an evening meal for the Red Bird students at the church. Donations of food and volunteers to help serve are needed.

Volunteers are also needed to host the students in their homes on Thursday night after the concert. If you can help provide food or host two students, over-night please sign the list in the narthex or contact Kevin Hinkle or Martha Vaché.

Everyone is invited to come hear this wonderful singing group.

UMW Reading Program book reviewsColor-Blind: The Rise of Post-Racial Politics and the Retreat From Racial Equity, written by Tim Wise, is a 2019 Reading program book in the Social Action category. Focusing on disparities in employment, housing, education and healthcare, Wise argues that racism is indeed still an acute problem in the United States today, and that colorblind policies actually worsen the problem of racial injustice. The author presensts a timely and provocative look at contemporary racism and offers ideas on what can be done to achieve true social justice and economic equality.

Strong Was Her Faith: Women of the New Testament, by the beloved author J. Ellsworth Kalas, focuses on 11 women of great faith who were crucial, in ways both obvious and understated, to the story of the New Testament. The author looks into the life and times of these women, such as Elizabeth, Mary, Dorcas, and Mary Magdalene. With his well-known style, Kalas examines the Scriptures to see what we can learn about these women, what we can learn from them, and how each woman fits into, as well as shapes, the New Testament story. This book is a 2014 Reading Program offering in the Spiritual Growth category.

UMW April ChallengeA simple tip for freshening up the stale winter air in

your home is to crack open windows when possible and to buy new indoor plants. One plant can clean the air in a 100 square feet area. Buy as many as you need.

Our United Methodist Women’s Spring Salad Luncheon will be on Wednesday, April 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Invite your friends and neighbors. Tickets are available from UMW members, the church office or at the door for $8.00.

Our luncheon is always a success because everyone in the Centenary family helps and donates salads. Volunteers (men and women) are needed on Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. to set-up the dining room and bazaar and prepare food. On the day of the luncheon we need lots of help – in the kitchen before serving time, in the dining room, and during cleanup.

We also need donations of baked goods, plus craft items and white elephants. Please bring Bazaar items to the Narthex by Tuesday morning. Baked goods are needed by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. It will be helpful if you would price your items.

FHS planning Famous BreakfastThe “Famous” FHS Breakfast will be held on

Sunday, May 5 at 9:30 between services. This special fundraiser will benefit the “Take It To The Streets” summer lunch program. Come join us for great food and fellowship to support the children of our community!

UMW LaMoine Spring metingThe LaMoine River District Spring Meeting will be

held on Saturday, April 27 at Hull UMC. Rev. Jan Foulk will be our featured speaker. When visiting Liberia on a mission trip, Jan realized that young women needed to have a marketable skill to support their families. Jan has dedicated her retirement to providing sewing machines and sewing training for women in Liberia. Jan uses her artistic skills to raise money for this project. She will share her passion for mission and her art work with us.We will have devotions, music, a memorial service, UMW updates, fellowship, and a delicious lunch prepared by the host UMW ladies.

Registration and breakfast snacks are at 9:00 a.m. with the meeting starting at 9:30 a.m. Tickets for breakfast/lunch are $10. Let Angi or Martha know if you plan to attend by Monday, April 22 so we can call in reservations and plan car-pooling.

Food Center reportsJAN REPORT - We served 97 families for food

orders, a total of 228 people at a cost of $9,779.05. We served 450 families for extra bakery, a total of 976 people at a cost of $6,586.89. The churches contributed $6,651.61 in money and $515.25 in food donations. This report is late due to the cancellation of the food meeting because of weather.

FEB. REPORT - We served 150 families for food orders, a total of 312 people at a cost of $14,795.65. We served 465 families for extra bakery, a total of 1,228 people at a cost of $7,879.29. The churches contributed $1,047.00 in money and $490.75 in food donations.

The Food Center requested that the food from the food drive be brought to the center regularly, rather than all at one time. It is easier to weigh and place in smaller amounts, and possibly food would be received that would have to be purchased.

Changes in recycling at churchPlease check the flyer on the kitchen wall to see the

changes on what can and cannot be recycled at Centenary. Centenary is considered a business so different recycling rules apply than for private homes. Some of the items that you recycle at home aren’t permitted for a business.

Please recycle these items after rinsing: cardboard, plastic bottles, milk jugs, aluminum cans, tin/steel cans, cereal/cake/cracker boxes, paper/magazines/newspapersCentenary cannot recycle these items:

PASTOR(CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE) We all need a savior to help us press on and accept those things that are beyond our control. When Jesus hung on the cross he asked God to forgive us. Was our savior demonstrating that help is needed in the hardest times?

Whether its a forced decision from earthly factors, a fender bender, a misspoken word, an illness or whatever else you face, Paul tells us to press on. He seems to get it, because he doesn’t just say press on, he writes, “straining towards what is ahead.”

We know life can be difficult and ‘pressing on’ may make reality seem all too easy. I believe God is telling us, through Paul’s writing, that our struggles are known in Heaven, and that help is not only needed, but readily available. God cares about all that we face.

Whatever you are facing, Paul suggests that we focus on the goal to win the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus. The goal is not to find 100% satisfaction in this life, that is not God’s promise. Paul’s reminder is that we press on towards the real prize, our goal, which is our salvation through Jesus. In an unsure world, it is a blessing to have one thing which we can be sure of.

Boy Scout clean up dayScouts from Troops 103 and 107 will

be cleaning 4 campsites at the Fruendenberg Scout Cleanup Day, Sat., Apr. 6. A lot of work needs to be done to clean a long overgrown trail. Revival at Franklin UMCA revival is being planned, Apr. 7-9 at the Franklin UMC, 102

State St., Franklin, IL. Scheduled for Apr. 7 is the Rev. Kevin Hembrough with music by F.A.I.T.H. Ministry. April 8 will feature the Rev. Jame Hahs with music by Jame’s Kidz. the Rev. Gifty Smith will preach on Apr. 9 with music by 4 His Glory. Each evening begins at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.


Mother Daughter BanquetMark your calendars for our annual Mother/

Daughter Banquet on Monday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will be entertained by Jamie Headen and David Hayes. They play guitars and banjos and do country and gospel music.

Hamilton’s will provide a delicious meal of chicken and noodles, baked ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, sautéed vegetables, toss salad, assorted dressings, and rolls. UMW circle members bring desserts.

Advance ticket purchase is required. Tickets will be sold in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or in the church office. The deadline to purchase tickets is Tuesday, May 7. The UMW will provide a meal for the men in our Centenary family who are willing to help that evening with serving and clean-up.

Salvation Army FLEA-ESTAThe Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary’s annual

FLEA-ESTA will be on May 17 and 18 in the Merchants Building at the north side of the Morgan County Fair Grounds. Donations of used but still useful furniture and other items are wanted. (No clothing, shoes, or electronics.) Drop of items between 9 am and 4 pm on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday the week of the sale.

Share the LoveShare the Love 2019 will be held on Saturday,

April 13 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at 200 E. Douglas. It will provide individuals with the following items free: clothing, cleaning supplies, shoes, food, hygiene items and bedding. Centenary is collecting mashed potatoes and rice. Volunteers are needed. Contact Barb Ginder for more information.

Community Shoe DriveThank you to everyone who donated used shoes for

the Shoeman Water Project. The shoes are exported to retailers in the developing world. The resale of shoes provides affordable footwear, protecting the new owner’s feet and overall health from foot abrasions, parasites and mites. Money from the sale is used to purchase well drilling rigs, water filtration systems, and other supplies to bring clean, fresh water to those who thirst.

Take It To The StreetsDid you know that there are children in

Jacksonville who are hungry? Grace UMC sponsors a program called “Take it to the Streets” that provides Free Sack Lunches for Kids during the summer. Last summer they provided lunches at several locations every weekday. You can help by donating food, money, and/or time. Watch for more information.

MNBS sets new studyThe Monday Night Bible Study will begin a Lenten

study from April 1 until May 6.Ê The book we will be using is “Simon Peter:Ê Flawed But Faithful Disciple”by Adam Hamilton.Ê Join us as we take an in-depth view into the life, faith, and character of Simon Peter.Ê The stories of Peter’s shortcomings serve to humanize Peter, allowing ordinary Christians to identify with him.Ê We hope to see ourselves in Simon Peter, the flawed but ultimately faithful follower of Jesus Christ.Ê Direct any question to Diana Phillips

Community Easter Egg huntCentenary will be hosting a Community Easter Egg

Hunt on Sunday, April 14th at 2:00 in the afternoon. (weather permitting) All children ages 1-10 are invited to participate in the Easter Egg Hunt. Everyone is invited to attend. We are expecting a special guest!
