He directs the Human Migraine Research Unit at the Danish Headache Centre and Department of Neurology, Glostrup Hospital. His research focuses on experimental models of migraine and functional neuroimaging. What has been the greatest achievement of your career? Establishing a team of dedicated clinical scientists to better understand the complex pathophysiological events that constitute migraine and translating that knowledge into better patient treatment. What inspired you? Migraine is not just headache but a complex brain disorder and understanding the complexity of this prevalent disease could improve quality of life for millions of people. If you had not entered your current profession, what would you have liked to do? Be an architect. Who was your most influential teacher, and why? Jes Olesen, who introduced me to the specialty and provided world-class leadership training. What would be your advice to a newly qualified doctor? Listen to your patients, stay focused on your career, and remember that there is always room for improvement. How do you relax? Playing soccer. What is your favourite book, and why? Dostoyevsky’s “The Idiot”—the greatest soap opera ever written. What are you currently reading? “Man from Zardob” by Rahman Badalov. The book is in Russian and about the life of Hasan bey Zardabi, who is regarded as one of the founders of modern Azerbaijani journalism and theatre. You can have dinner tonight with a famous person of your choice (dead or alive), who would this be? Václav Havel to discuss the temptations of political power. What items do you always carry with you? My iPhone, because I need to stay online and check my emails. I cannot remember how I managed without my phone! What do you think is the most neglected field of medicine at the moment? Stroke, particularly in developing countries where millions of people do not receive proper care.
