Ever since it was founded MET has led the way in developing innovative solutions for keeping cyclists safe.

Complex systems require a complete engineering package. By bringing to-gether our expertise in design, soft-ware, electronics, predictive model-ling, virtual analysis, accidentology, ergonomics, anatomy and industrial design, MET is able to develop sys-tems which compliment each other perfectly thus making it possible to of-fer products which provide outstand-ing performance.

Let’s take as an example the brand new Drone Wide Body, the most aer-odynamic helmet ever designed, or what about the Parachute, the lightest full-face helmet in the world, the re-sult is a clever mix of functionality and safety criteria which, with each new project, challenges the status quo and constantly pushes a little further those limits which others imagined had been set for ever.

The company’s head office is located in Talamona, a small town in the heart of the Italian Alps. It is no coincidence that the MET brand has always been associated with the values which char-acterize its Alpine heritage: efficiency, attention to detail, design, innovation, high-performance, reliability and sus-tainable development.

ALL THE ADVANTAGES OF THE NEW OCCIPITAL RETENTION SYSTEM - THE SAFE-T ADVANCED

When you reach a high level of performance, each gram counts. By reducing the weight by over 20% the weight of the new Safe-T Advanced compared to the previous system, we have obtained a really significant increase in comfort and performance while reducing tiredness. The contact area has been in-creased yet pressure on the head has been reduced thanks to a more even distribution.

Like all occipital retention systems in the 2015 MET range, the new Safe-T Advanced goes around the whole circumference of the head. Unlike most of our competitors’ sys-tems, it does not push the back of the head against the front part of the helmet, but in-stead keeps the helmet away from the head. By allowing the helmet to rotate very slightly in the event of an oblique impact, it helps ab-sorb part of the impact energy and reduce the risk of consequent brain damage.

By reducing the space between notches on the central adjustment wheel, we have increased adjustment precision by 25% compared to the previous system. The ver-tical adjustment has three positions, with up to 18mm adjustment range compared to the two positions and adjustment range which was limited to 8mm on the previous system.

Fitted on all the mid to high end models of our range, the new occipital retention system, the Safe-T Advanced, increases the circum-ference adjustment available by about 1 cm compared to previous system. Those cyclists who previously needed an L size may now find that the M size fits them well. Oth-ers who were at the upper limit of the L size will now have greater manoeuvrability and will even have enough room to wear an un-der helmet cap in the winter.

ALL THE ADVANTAGES OF GEL 02 INTERIOR FOAM PADS

Some helmet manufacturers choose to use traditional fabric foam pads with extra thick-ness in order to keep the helmet in position. However, the inconvenience is that this sig-nificantly increases head temperature. GEL 02 pads have the ability to naturally adapt to any head shape making it unnecessary to over tighten the occipital retention system.

Traditional foam pads rapidly deteriorate as a consequence of constantly absorbing transpiration. Especially when the helmet is used intensively. GEL 02 pads are much less susceptible to the acidity in sweat and pre-serve their inherent properties for up to 10 times longer.

Traditional fabric foam pads absorb sweat. To keep them clean, you are recommended to hand wash and then dry them naturally each time you have used them. As they do not absorb sweat, you only need to wipe them with a sponge after each bike ride in order to clean GEL 02 pads properly. And they will be dry in the blink of an eye.

Even if they are made of high quality fibre, tra-ditional foam pads made from fabric remain limited by the characteristics of the material used. Originally used in the medical indus-try, the morpho-polyurethane from which our GEL 02 pads are made was especially de-veloped for medical use. Hypo-allergenic and anti bacterial, it was first designed to be used as an interface between the skin and various medical appliances.

When defining ventilation efficiency, a fundamental aspect which directly influences a cyclist’s performance, most helmet manufacturers simply indicate the number of air intakes for such and such model, implying that the helmet with the greatest number of air intakes is therefore the best ventilated. However, in reality, this indication alone does not provide any real information about the true capacity of the helmet to keep the head cool.MET, on the other hand, has developed its own protocol to measure the helmet’s per-formance in terms of ventilation called Air Scale, which measures two fundamental parameters. The Head Contact Surface (HCS) and the Cooling Factor (CF). 

MET’S AIR SCALE

The cooling factor is calculated using Fluid Flow Analysis. Through this very high-tech computerized analysis system particle traces are used to visualize and measure the mo-tion of mass-less particles that are placed in a flow field. In our case we measure the velocity and temperature of the air as it goes through the helmet in order to rate each hel-met accordingly to its capacity of keeping the head cool. The higher the Cooling Factor, the cooler the head.

The Head Contact Surface indicates in per-centage how much of the head is in contact with the helmet. It is easy to understand that where the head is in contact with the hel-met there is no room for the air to circulate. The HCS provides a key information to rate a helmet ventilation. The lower the HCS, the better the ventilation.

The overall objective of our Research and Development department is to improve our understanding of what humans need to increase their level of safety when cycling - in particular in the event of a fall but also in other circumstances – and to respond when needed with suitable technical solutions. The specific demands which are associated with particular types of cycling (urban, enduro, child, road etc.) need a really excellent understanding of a wide range of fields. During our research we have developed our own software for dynamic modelling which provides us with a huge capacity for ana-lysing movement and constraints in three dimensions (3D). They enable us to define the geometry of a model in its entirety and to test its properties virtually. The different construction solutions that we have fine tuned have all come out of the constant work carried out by the Research and Development department.

JUST SOME OF THE MET INNOVATONS IN HELMET CONSTRUCTION

In the event of an impact the pressure on the helmet shell is uneven; we can see that most of the pressure is concentrated within a limited area. HES construction, which in-volves embedding two homothetic shells, spreads most of the pressure built up by the compression at the impact point and thus dissipates the force of impact over the whole shell.

HES construction also provides the possibil-ity to reduce the density of polystyrene in some areas of the shell, which translates in a reduction in weight and thus an increase in performance.

In order to be able to resolve problems, to suggest innovating solutions and to invent new possibilities for each new project, our designers have to take a multidisciplinary approach. Their culture is just as likely to be inspired by art, technique or social sciences as by natural science. The concept behind the Wide Body comes clearly from the au-tomobile industry, where it is synonymous with increased performance.The result of years of virtual testing then testing in the wind tunnel and finally on the track then the road, the construction of the Wide Body offers a distribution of mass and volume far above the usual standard re-quired for ‘against the clock’ racing helmets. Our Wide Body concept lowers the helmet’s centre of gravity and increases its volume on the sides in order to partially eradicate the ‘wall’ created by the rider’s clavicles, an area of turbulence which naturally offers wind resistance and creates drag. Never, before the Drone Wide Body, has an against-the-clock racing helmet reached such a high level of efficiency.

Unlike its predecessor, the new Parachute is a real full-face helmet and its chin guard is not removable. The fact that it does not use the traditional construction technique for full-face helmets using fibreglass or other mate-rials (carbon, etc.) soaked in resin, can, at first, be quite unsettling. But shouldn’t the role of all revolutionary technologies be to stun the observer? The MET monocoque con-struction based on an In-moulded helmet, in other words a fusion of polycarbonate shells and polystyrene and an integrated chin guard, enables us to set a new standard for weight reduction. But also to respond to the most demanding specifications concerning safety. The Parachute is certified according to American standards ASTM F1952-2032 which are used for full-face helmets for DH or BMX.

An exoskeleton of ICE Lite composite ma-terial unifies the three distinct elements which make up the helmet’s structure. This concept, which was inspired by animals with carapaces, when combined with In-mould construction, gives outstanding structural performance. The specific shape of the deflectors (the visi-ble part of the skeleton) is designed to direct maximum air flow towards the interior of the shell helping make Sine-Thesis the best ventilated helmet ever designed according to the German magazine Road Bike after a comparative performance test.

MONOCOQUE

Exclusive technology developed by engi-neers in our Research and Development laboratory. In-mould construction involves fusing to-gether in the same matrix the two parts of the helmet shell (the interior which is gen-erally black or grey polystyrene and the coloured polycarbonate exterior) during the moulding process. This construction technique provides better shock-absorption results than the Twin-Shell at equivalent volume and material density. Thanks to the In-mould Intelligent Fusion process, MET goes even further by using different densities of material depending on the characteristics of each model to improve the weight/volume ratio while optimising the shock absorption capacity.

At MET the product development process is based on virtual modelling and impact test-ing simulation by finite element calculation. Helmet development is completed using flu-id flow analysis for products with optimized performance in ventilation and aerodynamics.

Having fixed the design and the geometry de-tails, we carry out a simulation of certification testing procedure by finite element calcula-tion. It allows our R&D dept. to understand how the product would react to impacts in advance of any pilot tooling production.

Technically speaking, our printer machine works with ABS material and the printing pro-cess is based on a moving head that produces the object in a 3D shape layer by layer. There are many benefits which convinced us to adopt this technology internally at our main R&D dept.

Considering the considerable losses involved when a product development is not fully op-timized, early checking of details can make a big difference to the final quality of a success-ful project.

Once the real product shape is available, it is possible to arrange additional laboratory checks for certification and also fitting tests. It is a means of completing the technical steps of finite element calculation and fluid flow analysis. In some cases, like for instance our last project of the new full face helmet, it also allows us to apply wind tunnel testing to vali-date the data of the fluid flow analysis.

The designer is completely free to test several different style options, because even a draft study of a style can be produced as a physical item with the 3D printing process.

The last benefit of 3D printing is related to pro-tecting confidentiality of information about a new project. Having the 3D printer in our R&D office means that all the data remain in our headquarters during the engineering process and until the project has been finalized.

The MET Design Lab unit, at the heart of our R&D department, has been assigned the task of searching relentlessly for the unique and the exceptional. The heir to a long line of helmets which have made their mark on the history of modern cycling, the Drone Wide Body is the 100th helmet model developed by Met since the company was founded in 1987. Its architectural design is the fruit of far reaching research which enabled us to test numerous solutions, first virtually then putting those results to the test under ‘real life’ condi-tions in a wind tunnel, then on the test track and finally on the road. It’s a design which transcends classic codes for this type of helmet and which has helped achieve a spectacular reduction in aerodynamic drag.

SINE THESIS ICE LITE

An Exoskeleton made of composite materials is at the heart of Sine Thesis’ architectural design. The streamlined fins are just the visible parts. They link the main ‘structural gaps’ in the polystyrene shell and guide the air towards the inside of the helmet. The air flow is also increased by the fact that only 20% of the head’s surface covered comes into any contact with the hel-met. Add to all that the fact that the strap fixture points are embedded inside the shell, thus leaving the exterior of the shell completely smooth, and you can understand why the Sine-Thesis is not only the best ventilated helmet ever de-signed but also one of the most aerodynamic.

X-country riders have always been obsessed by the weight of their bike and the size of their tyres. Research shows, however, that they should be paying more attention to their helmet. A high head temperature means an increase in the amount of sweat the body is producing. That leads to a higher loss of liquids and to dehydration, which in turn has a negative impact on the rider’s level of perfor-mance. Not with the Veleno, the most X-Country style helmet in our MTB range. What’s more, they are specifically designed to meet children’s needs when it comes to protection and style. The Crackerjack is no exception to the rule. Intelligent fusion In-Moulding construction, Led light built into the occipital retention system, anti-insect net, removable visor, anti-pinch buckle.... Both its shape and specific features make this helmet a pure concentrate of vitality and safety. Size is adjustable from 52 to 57 cm head size to grow with the child.

All of the colours and graphics found in our junior ranges have had to go through a fierce selection process. It’s the kids who choose, and their parents don’t have any say in it whatsoever! Intelligent Fusion In-Moulding construction provides a robust and safe construction solution; hypoaller-genic internal foam pads, anti-pinch buckle and led light built into the occipital retention system are all part of the standard equipment on the Gamer. And so that the helmet has no problem keeping up with the child as he grows so quickly, the size of the Gamer can be ad-justed, with a simple size adjustment wheel, from 52 to 57 cm head size.

MET’s kids helmets have always evolved from a simple but great idea to not just reproduce adult models in a smaller size but to pay special attention to the specific demands of our youngest customers. And even the Elfo is not a small version of Genio, it has its own shape with greater head coverage and is better suited to ba-bies. Other examples of specific adaptations: the back of the helmet is almost vertical to enable the child to sit up straight in the bike seat and then there is the Bimbi-Secure internal geometry concept. It ensures there is no contact between the helmet and the fontanel, the most fragile zone of the child’s head, even on impact.

Striking the perfect balance between solid volume and air in-take vents has led to this compact and well-ventilated shell at a highly competitive price.
