The Metal Arts Guild of Nova Scotia is a not-for-profit
organization composed of metal artists and craft workers
founded in March 1951. The organization’s Guild Mark
bears a salmon (en fesse) centred across a shield and
surrounded by three silversmith hammers.
These crafts and arts include jewelry, silver and gold
smithing, sculpture, enamelling, and blade making. They
involve the use of precious and non-precious metals, alone
or in combination with alternative materials.
The purposes of the Guild are to:
• stimulate and develop interest and practice in
traditional as well as innovative metal crafts and
art.
• encourage and assist members in developing their
skills and improving their standards.
• provide instruction to members in these skills and
crafts.
• give members the opportunity to participate in
craft displays and markets.

The Guild Mark, salmon en fesse with 3 silversmith’s hammers, was designed by Dr. Donald C. MacKay who was an original Honourary Member of the Guild and Principal of the Nova Scotia College of Art. The Mark, registered in 1953, was based on the first Nova Scotia Provincial Crest and also echoes the arms of the Edinburgh Guild of Hammermen (Deacons). It can be used by Guild members on work made of precious metals. Its use is controlled by the Warden of the Guild.
For the wise man looks into space and he knows there is no limited
dimensions.
- Lao Tzu
