Ivlaster'smost recent Slaues o Societyexemplifies their grit, dirtand sweat-style death/thrash metal characterized by songsagainst war, as well political themes in general. Master soundssomething like Motorhead playing death/thrash metal. It 'supfront, aggressive, headbanging, no-nonsense metal. Masterstarted out in Chicago in the early 80s and tl'reir songs havebeen covered by Napalm Death and others. Paul Speckmann, the band leader, nowadays lives in tl'reCzech Republic, whencehe continues to rnake music. Paul is known for outspokerr\.iewS, as this interview shows. www.master-speckmetal.comrv w\,\/.mvspace. orn/ masterspeckmann"slaves to Societv" was available in Europe before the U.S.I lave ),ou toured in support of the album in Europe? the U.S.?Yes we plaved nurnerous shows in Europe in support of thisalbum earlier ir-r the year. A full tour for the albunr tvascompletecl n early sprirrg. just f inished touring the USA fo r l3shows successfully,bu t unfortunately rro one was interested nWisconsiu. You missed a full packed house itr dort'ntort'ttChicago at a so-calledvuppy joint called the Elbow Room. Over200 people supported Master on a Tuesda1,.The U.S. version of the album has four bonus tracks from aderno called "Everything Is Rotten". Can ),ou explain a little?Actually the denlo was recorded in 2005 to secure a nerv dealw, ith 'fwiligl-rt Vertrieb in Europe. The tracks appeared on theFour More Years of Terror alburn later that year, but the den-roversions \.vere us t more aggressive in m1, opinion. The albumkills as well, but sornetimes demos come out better because heyare hurried and the relentless aggression can be felt becauseofthe hunger for a new release. Can )rou comment on the cover of the album? The cover seemsto be l ike a gore sexistcover, but Master is no t about that at all.The cover was designecl by mv friend, IVIichaelKull, back in1995, and I just felt this was a perfect cover for Slaves ToSocietv. In any gas station in the USA as well as in Europe youcan find pornography available so this was fitting with the title. We are all Slaves To Socie[' as governrnent, schools andteachers try to dictate the warr we should live and function.People are brainwashed from an early age and the free thinkersof the world are all lost from the get go. It's time to break awayfrom these stupid ideologies and let the people think fo rthernselves.Television is also a dangerous medium as well withall the hidden messages and false advertising.Have you l-radproblems in some placeswith censorship? In Europe this was used by the record company as an excuse Isuppose, but in the end I thought this n'as quite humorous. And do )rou think ma)'be the cover, without intending it. comesacross as a sexist? You know, l ike being against a stereotvpe, but ends up prornoting the stereorl'-pe?No t reall l ' , I l ike to poke fu n at all issues in life. You moved to the Czech Republic to join Krabathor. Now ),oulive there correct?Yes I moved to tl"reCzech Republic tooriginal bassist left the band in 1999

joirr Krabathor after theI recordecl an albunrs

worth of material first with Christopher and Skull under themoniker Martyr and was asked to join after this project. I hadspent 44 days on the road as Krabathor opened for Master andN4alevolent Creation in 7999 on the System Shock Over Europart 2 Tour. After M days we of course became great friends, hell even the bassist and I were friends. He quit to pursue a soloproject. Was the language difference difficult at first? The language is still difficult and i personally think all peopleshould learn English anyway. Speak English or Die is a fittingphrase from SOD. Actually the second language in scl'rool sEnglish todav so my wife's niece is beginning to learn andthankfully for rne in a few years she will be a new interpreterfor me. I'm just lazy and too old to leam new thirrgs. My Czechwife speaks English and spoke English perfectly when I arrivedso I really \,\ 'asn't orced to learn. I suppose in sotne ways it 's apity but it 's water under the bridge.Do ),ou have kids the Czech Republic non,?I have a rt,ife, bu t rro children as of yet, naybe in the futurelT i r nen ' i l l t e l l .

Have )tou beerr able to make a lirring from music there?Yes, I joined a companv called Kraft Evention back in 2003,arrdwhen lr4aster sn't touring, I go on the road lvith bands likeVital Remains,Jungle Rot or I l l Disposed as a tour rnanageror anrerchandiser,so this supplements my income and this is how Ilive from the music. I am a true supporter of the ur-rderground.just returned from the tour with Allen West and Lor.r,bron' heduy after I returned from the USA I joinecl this tour. How do you feel about the U.S. when you visit nowada),s?The USA was great fun, the crowds were surprisinglyenormous at nearly every show except for Texas. Those shorvswere small, but I expected this, Bush lives and breathes in thisregion. I really enyoyed he Appease The Beast Two Festival.urHollvwierd on Sunday Oct, 26th, with the 2000maniacs. I go t tosee mJr old friends Macabre as well as Nifelheim from Sr.veden.San Francisco was quite cool the Morrdav after this vr'ith,90diehards supporting IvIastel,Songs like "World Police." "Slaves to Societv," and "ThqDarkest Age" suggest that ),ou basically are still very rnuchinspired to write lyrics by the political situation as you see it.What issues n particular are the ones that push )rour buttons? All aspects of politics and religion inspire my songs. The shitrysituation involving Bush and the geriatric patients that run theUS are a great inspiration for me. Killing seens to be thenumber one issue with the last government. Forcing democrac;.'on individuals that aren't interested seems to be a great themefo r the soon to be previous administration. I suppose this isnothing new among the power-mongers of society. I am anAmerican and damn proud of it , but the polit ics of Arnericareally suck.

. , i , ,Is there unreleased Master music from the 80s? The ralburn"Fuckin' Death" blz Death Strike (another band Paul was irt),isreallv awesorne! s there rnore stuff like that?John frorn lncantation and his Ibex Moon label will be releasingDeathstrike as well as the Funeral Bitch dernos on CD next year. From time to time I fincl unreleased things in rny vaul[5.

Master was against Bush. Now there's a Democrat president.Do you support Obama or do you think that it's better to makea revolution? (Personally. I think working people need to havetheir own revolutionary labor partJr to take political power fromthe caoitalist class).I believe in power to the people. But, in your country peopleneed to be lead, they have trouble thinking for themselves. Thisis the sad truth. It' s time for the youth of today to take a standand take over the USA as well as the rest of world. But I amsure this will never happen in our lifetime. Governmentalcontrol is the future. All freedoms will be relinquished in thenear future. As for the new president, I suppose it will be goodfor the impoverished races in the USA, but we will see whathappens to the rest of society. While on tour with Lowbrowfrom the US, a few of the members were afraid that they wouldhave all their guns taken away from them, and this is agreeablya big possibility and a real problem they will be facing soon. Ithink much trouble is headed your way in America. So theyouth best get organized. The year 2008 is coming to an end. Plans for 2009?Master will play 35 dates in Europe beginning in January 2009,followed by 7 dates in Russia and then South America. Isuppose if time allows, we will record a new CD. Master willtour the USA again next summer. For some twenty years now bands have paid tribute to Master.Have vou qotten a chance to meet a lot of those bands?I run into many of these legends from time to time and yes wehave discussed these issues on many occasions. Napalm Deathcovered the song Master a few years back on Leaders NotFollowers Part2 and actually sent me royalties. I have nothingbut the utmost respect for these legends. It's nice to have been apart of the inception of the genre. I met Terry Butler from SixFeet Under and he informed me on the Massacre re-union tourthat he and Chuckie from Death played a song called the Truththat I wrote for Deathstrike back in 1984 on their first US tourback in the early days. It's really a small world, brother.Last thoughts, comments, iokes or news?Yes, go out and get Slaaes To Society in the USA. If you arelooking for original Master metal then this is for you. Skip thecheap imitators and get the real thing. Thanks for the interviewand the support. These interviews with guys like you are what

Hey man what's up? I like it when interviews don't start onasking the band's biography hehe. Things have been ok afterthat compilation release we have been playing small shows inour country, still, it won't sum up to a "touring" lifestyle for theband it is more like a scene thingie rather than playing to alarge fanbase. But if a tour schedule manages to hit the band wewould gladly accept it. To explain further, if you have a band inthe south east asian region it is relatively hard to get a tourinternationally but it is not impossible at all...bands there arehere going out i.e. Impiety, Chtonic, Daighila, SecondCombat...We are writing some tracks for a proper e.p maybewith some covers target this October. Can you tell us a bit about each member? Songs, lyrics, thedrunkard?Current lineup 2008: Imran guitars (th" big guy), Szha

vocals(the dizzy dope gqy),Edwin bass(the professor guy),Andrew guitars(the kvlt guy and the youngest) and me ondrums(the ghost guy). Andrew is from Guam so he will gethere and rehearse with us during his summer vacafion and endof the year holidays. Lyrics wise its Szha and me sharing lyricalduties, while the songs are done by Imran most of the time. Foryour information we are the band that consumes the least beer!Maybe Andrew drinks the most liquor when he gets here haha, who likes to argue for fun? It would be Andrew and me!How difficult was it to start a band in the beginning. buyinstruments. find other people into metal music?I would say musicians nowadays are lucky as it's easier to form

a band and gather a fairly skilled pool of musicians to play withnow. Gefting good instruments were close to impossible duringthose days when we were adolescents, including the fact wecome from average income families and doing school at thesame time was tough. In the beginning chapter of the band wasnot as simple as going to a website and post classified ads for aband member, in fact we were without a vocalist for 2 years andeverything's seems wrong with the band, until we were able togetSzha to vomit for us. It was also hard to get the replacementguitarist who left in 2007. I got an email in early 2008 fromAndrew, saying he's interested to play with us but limited onlyduring hisWhat is the ciV where you live like? Is there a metal scene? This country is not even big to separate city by city or state bystate hehe. Coincidentally, we would call our country's scene as"the lioncity scene" for the word "Singa" is lion in Malay. In ourcountry we have huge talents for playing metal and these actsgets the most attention during shows/gigs. We are nowhere::,ln::

that; we just do our "thing" at a dark, dusty and droney

What is "Black Disharmonium" about lyrics-wise?When we wrote "Black Disharmonium" most of the guys werein a fucked .tp state of mind. Simply said the background inthat song wants the listener to choose to be in harmony or inbattle with his/her inner devils, he/she could make his/herinner devils work for him/her or go against him/her. Itdepends on the individual if they think that they can feelconnected to the song. Other than that it's a great thrashingsong in our thrash metal books.

    keep the scenealive. THE END.

Helmskey's brand of death metal is a rough-around-the-edgesfeel to it. Not too polished or clean, but rather harsh on the ears,in a good way. They blast some, shred some and sound likethey are not ready to play nice. Helmskey contributes two songson the compilation "Rise of the Eastern Blood" which featuresbands from Asia, like Demonic Resurrection, Severe Dementiaand Dusk. I sent the band some questions and the drummer,Mace, says the following:How have things gone after your appearance of "Rise of theEastern Blood"? What are )zour future plans?

What inspired the song "To Rise and Fall Again"?I called up Szha one night and we were talking on the phoneabout titles on some of the tracks. We were wondering whymost bands love the notion that, once an individual fall, he willone day rise again. It sounds too cheesy and "flowery"...howabout making a title sounding the opposite, how about if anindividual rise one day and he falls miserably in the next day orweek. That's much more metal than anything else, besidesmetal should be miserable, full of anger, hate and thedetachment from everything good...not praising the lord orwhat so ever, it should not even sound huppy and full of hope. One thing's for sure I don't get and will never dig most christianmetal band's beliefs..Do you have children? Do thelr listen to metal music?Szha is going to be a daddy soon, while most of us are notmarried. We are attached to work, school!!

What is it about metal music that you connected with so muchthat you decided to play it?For me personally I listen to any tunes that catch my attention. One thing about us as a band we grew up listening to widerange of genres, ranging from the thrash of Slayer to the reachesof hardcore punk of Born Against. Metal just was music that wethink we were able to relate closely and of course playl It's justso hard to point a finger to what bands the guys hadexperienceda major impact in their lives...ya that's basically itWhat is a "helmske)'"? Is it a key to a helm? What kind of helm?A ship's helm? Do you like ships? Is your life like a ship? How?At what moment did this question get out of hand and becomeridiculous?Well it's actually taken from 2 sources. Firstly, Lord of TheRings. It was the battle of Helm's deep that killed us! And theother of the band Attacker that had that album "Battle at Helm'sDeep." The cover album had a retard looking warrior slayingthis green creature. That album just kills! All interpretations arewelcomed! What do you think? What kind of jobs do you have?Lots of jobs like building technician, IT support, water cyclingcontroller, shipping supervisor etc... Our old guitarist iscurrently doing street busking full-time.What is a good book that you read recently that you liked? The recent book that I got hold of was, "Fragile Things" by NeilGaiman which was really a bad ass read. I just started reading itand never stopped since. What advice do you have for )roung metalheads that want tolearn how to growl really well? What is the best walr to growl?Hahaha I have no idea bro! Just use your lungs correctlymaybe?Last thoughe? Thanks for the interview bro and the interest in us. For any ofyour readers would like to contact us, they could do so [email protected] drop by

Closer's A Darker Kind of Saluation is one of those cool, memorable albums by a band tha t seems confident in their notfitting in a particular genre. All sorts of modern metal elementscan be heard in their melodic, with somewhat growled vocals.Closer is not t ying to prove they are the most evil, but justcome across as pretty cool. Plus, their album is certainly akeeper because the songs are good all the way around. I guesssome people think that Closer sounds very Swedish. Go figure.http: / / www.myspace.com/ closerswedenWhat is happening now after ]rou released "A Darker Kind ofSalvation"?We are currently booking as many gigs as possible here insweden the next couple of months and we're looking for a tourslot sometime in feb/mars for a european tour. We arecontacting booking agents right now but no luck yet :("Hell Is Where the Heart Is" sure is a wiseacre name for a song!Who in the band' came up with that?!Well the name for that song was made up by me (Andreas) as Iwrite all the lyrics for the band, it was actually the first song weever wrote as a band and this version is a re recording of thesame. I came up with the name cause at that time I really feltlike the title, all my lyrics are reflections of how I feel. Are the songs part of an overall concept or just individual songswith different topics? Isn't "Caressing the Insane" something todo when you are home, you know, "Hell" where the heart is?!Well all the songs are linked together cause they tell all myemotions the past three years following depression and sucidalthoughts and such, "A darker Kind Of Salvation" is for me thelast resort out of my problems and hense the title for the album. Are you guys in other bands? If so, what are they?Per (guitars) is playing in The Bereaved together with TravisNeal from San Diego (currently touring with Divine Heresey).Johannes (Bass) is playing together with Johannes Kochy whowon a swedish TV-show called popstars. (kinda lika AmericanIdol)What is the album cover supposed to be?The cover art is a heart buried in the soil as a reflection of meand how I (Andreas) felg the heart represents myself and how acrushed heart makes you feel sometimes..Here in the U.S. some people are worried because capitalism isnot delivering the wealth and happiness that the corporationskeep promising. How are things for you all as a band?Well I don't think the finacial crisis hit sweden a hard as in theU.S. Both Per and Johannes work in a musicstore and they can'ttell any difference in peoples consuming. Our swedish crownhas a very low value as a result of the economic sifuasionthough. This makes exoprting swedish products easier. As a band it's hard to say. I guess people always wanna go outand see a good band play live even if their wallets are empty :)Do ]rou get together to jam or do you work individually andorhttp:/ / www.myspace.com/helmskey. Bon Soiree! THE END.

then send each other files with songs?I (Per) write almost everything from the start and then we takeit to the rehersalroom and play with the ideas. I think it's easierto present an idea with an audiofile to the rest of the band firstso they will know how the riff or song sounds in my head. Therest of the band usually puts their own twist to it later. It's hardto be creative on demand, like when your in the rehearsalroomand try to come up with new stuff. I think it's easier to beeffective if you already have ideas that you can work on anddevelop instead. Magic doesn't happen in the rehearsalroom! What are vour plans for 2009?We wanna do a european tour somewhere in-spring 2009 anddo as many summer festivals as possible. After the summer wehopefully have some new material finished to really startworking on our next record! What are some fun things to do in your town? What do you dofor fun during the winter? How about during the summer?I remember when I was a liule child.. It used to be so muchsnow in the winters.. nowdays it's just rain most of the time.Sucks. I guess we enjoy ourselves like everyone else.. Playingmetal, drinking milkshakes and watching simpsons on TV.Sunshine or snow. it doesn't matter :)Do you have a favorite meal? What kind of drink goes with it?Spicy meat and Gosser beer.. Thats the best. Have you triedaustrian beer? They sure know how to make great beer andkeep their daughters looke up in their basements!Last thoughts. comments, jokes or news?1_*""." Rock!Rock! THE END.

Leaae None Liuins is the title of this album with some L8 songsby Apocalyptic Visions, a brutal death metal band, thatsurprisingly, has quite a bit of musical diversity and somemelody in the midst of the blasting growling chaos. Don't judgea brutal death band based on their name or image or song titlesbecause it is not correct in this case! The vocalist, War, explainssome very interesting things that metal listeners should knowabout the dirty music business. Capitalism sucks, kids!www. myspace.com/ apocalypticvisionsWhat is happening currentl)z with Apocalyptic Visions afterreleasing "Leave None Living"?Our plans are to spread misery and suffering as widely aspossible. When the album was complete we started touringright away. Venues as distant as the Whiskey A Go Go in LosAngeles were soon outraged at how quickly we can frightenaway their customers. Mexico was completely differen! theyare so warlike they seemed to immediately understand us.Same for the Zuni Indians. We are currently booked for concertsin New York and other cities along the East Coast. There is apicture-disk single on Vinyl in the works, new t-shirt designs, and some of our songs were included in upcoming compilationCDs from Deathgasm Records, Explicitly Intense Magazine, andsomething called "Metal Maniacs," whatever that is'

Is the album released by the band? Did you decide, "Forgetrecord labels! We'lI release it ourselves!"Few people understand just how popular your music has to bebefore you can turn the leash around and control your master. This is fine for the hundred-foot monsters who walk the earthsuch as Iron Maiden and Metallica, but not for the tens ofthousands of bands beneath them. Even when a band generatesmillions of dollars this does not mean that the musicians seethat money. Shelf-space at Target and Hot Topic is not free. It isvery expensive to keep your name visible. Bands are deceivedof their success until their bills come due. Typically they areforced to buy back their unsold records back to pay debts orworse. We do not perform popular music so for us this wouldbe a terrible mistake. The last album cost us a crippling amountof money but we are never deceived about our position either. We have no regrets, we understand our fate, and for us this isthe most rewarding path. As far as the exact dollar amount Iwill only say this, it is more than most people think yet cheaperthan the final product sounds. How many albums does Apocalyptic Visions have in total?Officially there are only two: Doomsday Deuice and LeaaeNoneLiaing. Most of the album is blasting death metal, but there's also otherthings going on. like instrumentals that add variety to thealbum. Are those songs written collectively or individually?Who came up with the Spanish-language lyrics to "Tamboresde '.luetra"?Everything in Apocalypfic Visions is a collective effort by thefour of us. Everything is then refined through a harshlyeffective technique called "fighting." The foreign languages aremy thing because I am a Linguaphile. Spanish is not the onlyforeign language used on this album, there are at least twoothers I can recall at the moment. I feel like there is much magicin the mystery of alien languages and soon I will likely dropEnglish altogether. Is this y'all full-time, only band? Does War, Famine, Pestilenceor Plague have other bands they Play in?For all of us Apocalyptic Visions is our first, main, and onlyconcern. We pour our lives into this and everything else is just adistraction. But we do enjoy distractions. Pestilence has anexperimental noise project called Embersreich. They're crazy.Nobody in Atlanta can play metal for shit so Famine is oftenasked to lend his shredding talents to other bands in last-minute concerts. My twin sister is a versatile musician and wehave many bands together in various genres. Plague is the leastfriendly member of the band and few people dare to ask for hishelp, they usually will ask me if he will play drums for them. Ifigure if you want him, ask him yourself. How are the vocals recorded? Do you have several voices or isit vocal effects that )rou use? In a live situation do you haveonllr one vocalist? There are no effects used on our voices, ever. We are eachcapable of many vocal techniques which sometimes leads to theconfusion that there are extra singers, but the truth is there areonly two: Pestilence and myself. There is a lot of work involvedwith creating maximum impact for live performances with the

combination of our styles and for me the live concert is myfavorite. on the album we sometimes stack our vocals in a verycomplex patterns. The nature of studio recording itself is amasslve cheat anyway, so why not? What are your plans for 2009?Touring? Writing a new album?we should be ready to put the new songs in their grave afteranother six months of concerts. so the third album willprobably heave into view sometime late 2009.Y'all are based in Atlanta. Georgia. what is the metal world likefor you there?Atlanta metal doesn't like us, and we don't lfte Atlanta metal. We make few friends and many enemies, which is great. Whatthe fuck did I start writing music for, to wind up in the bardown the street where I spend all my time off anyway? Hell no,I want to go someplace new and piss off new people, make newfriends and new enemies in other cities.By the way, did you come up with the corre. a.t -ork. It,s like ahuge octopus Cyclops.Yes, I painted it. All the artwork for the band is my creation, butas I said before everything we do is a collaborative effort so it isnot unusual when pressed for time that I will only drawoutlines and then all four of us will form a sort of artisticassembly line. None of them have any background inillustration or design but they are intuitive and need littlesupervision. For that matter, I understand nothing aboutcarpentry or electronics but I end up doing a lot of blind slavelabor for them too, because they are all construction workersand there is a surprising span of disciplines used in this bandfor all sorts of reasons. Remodeling our tourbus, assemblingstages and lights and drum risers, repairing our own amplifiers, programming HTML code for electronic presskits, and all sortsof odd things I never anticipated when I first stole my father'sflr:r.

Apocalyptic Visions is my life, and it will be the death of

Anything else?No . THE END.r{,ErTROr@DREctOsstruggling with the Darkby Nuestros Derechos is one clever andfun album: this type of thrashpunk just has a cool, sincere vibethat exemplifies a mafure attitude about music: they don't careabout all that sfuff about "success" artd,,making it,, and all thatmoney-centered mentality. sometimes the music sounds likethrash with a punk attitude, sometimes vice versa. What do youthink?Terry: Music is a form of art. Art should be something to enjoy. We want as many people as possible to enjoy our art. If wewanted to get rich of our music, we would have chosen acomplete different direction. But we do what we do onlybecause we enjoy doing it. We want to share that witheveryone.Tanet: If creativity is a field, copyright is the fence, to quotecomposer John Oswald (who, by the way, also invented theterm plunderphonics to describe his illegitimate craft). It hasbeen said many times before, but basically we believe thatcurrent copyright laws are unjust, and are choking freeexpression.TohnnE In the eighties I copied tapes for and from friends. That's how we discovered. new music and new bands. Would you errer want to get sigoed to a label? Do thethree of your band members contribute to palzing for therecordings and thinss like that?Terry: A label could be helpful and do a lot of work for us,especially the promotion and distribution of our music. In ouropinion DIY actually means do-it-together. so working togetherwith a small label could be a good thing. As long as we keepour freedom in writing and playing our own music that we likethere shouldn't be many problems.Tohnny: DIY offers an alternative to act and create outsideestablished systems. Thanks to DIY you can reach a bit ofautonomy and freedom. small record labels driven by the samepassion fo r music rather than money are not necessarilyopposed to acting according to DlY-principles.Ianel As for the money: we contribute to a shared bankaccount. All the money we earn with gigs plus that monthlycontribution gives us the possibility to save enough money torecord our music. Though our last cd was a bit more expensivethan planned and we had to contribute a little more thanexpected... Forfunately the end result was worth it g

Tohnny: We t y to have a couple of gigs each month. Somebands work real hard to play at least once a week or even on adaily basis. I think that would be too much for us. We all haveat least one full-time job and relationships, so we're pretty busy. With this frequency we're always hungry to get on stage again. You are from Holland and the name of the band means "OurRights" in Spanish. I'm sure you have been asked this a lot, butsince I and the readers of this zine don't know the story, canyou tell us: 1. who came up with name 2. why did you choose aname in Spanish (it could have been in English or Dutch...) 3.the name is kind of "punk"; what kind of statement did youhave in mind 4. were you more of a punk band back then (nowthe sound is more like midtempo and uptempto thrashTohnny: I came up with that name. When we started we neededa band name in order to book a rehearsal studio. We didn'twant a name like all the others. We had a hard time getting aproper band name as all cool names seemed to be taken. Plusmany possible names had some connotations that did not seemto fit.Terry: Actually Johnny got inspired by the declaration ofuniversal children's rights. He stumbled across a version of thisdeclaration which was written in multiple languages, includingEnglish and Spanish. We agreed that it just sounded right inSpanish. This language somehow sounds so passionate, wordsseem to spark. There wasn't any specific statement meant bythis.Tanet Yeah, I agree it is a kinda punk name: Nuestros Derechosmight mean we got the right to make lots of noise, or the rightto play live as much as possible, or the right to drink beers asilHl as possible, r the right to... well

    - you know what ITerry: When we started the band, I was the only one with somemusical experience. So at first we were pretty bad. Back then wedid sound more like punk. Nowadays we have grownmusically and we sound much more metal. The punk attifudestays though! Was your song "Insomnia" written from personal experience?Do you know people with that problem? It's certainly a seriousproblem for some people and a very frustrating one because forthe person, they cannot do what everyone does withoutthinking about it: sleeping.Terry: For years I've had problems with falling asleep. Andthat's the time when you start asking yourself all kinds ofquestions that will keep you even longer awake. It has, forfunately, never been a huge problem for me, but I do know aperson who really suffers from insomnia. This person cannotfunction rightfully, because there's absolutely no energy left todo something. It's a horrific thing.Of the seven songs on the album. one. "Deimos" is in Dutchand the other ones are in English. Why only one? It is easier foryou to write lyrics in English or in Dutch? Does it ever seemstrange to )zou that it's "normal" for bands from all over theplanet to write lyrics in English? Do )zou know of metal or punkbands in Holland that write lyrics only in Dutch? On the cdbooklet there is another band called "Sin Dios" with a name inSpanish. Care to comment?

Terry: There are not many metal bands who write songs in. Mostof the lyrics are in English, probably because everyone wantshis/her music to be heard all over the world. English is themost common language then. There are a few metal and punkbands though, that write lyrics only in their native language. And yes, even some bands who sing in Dutch only.Ianet: I don't care in which language I sing. Dutch languagelends itself, however, well for protest songs. Hard consonancesemphasise some words well.Tohnny: It has grown a tradition for Nuestros Derechos torecord one song in Dutch. We started doing that on our firstdemo (PAN Recording Session, 2003) when we decided to makea new arrangement for an old song called Het Wijnglas(meaning The Wine Glass). This song was composed around1917 and deals with the horrors of World War One. It is perhapsthe first protest song in the history of popular music in TheNetherlands. When people responded enthusiastically on it, wedecided to add another song with Dutch lyrics to our nextrelease. That was De Strop on'Split 'em All' (2005).Tanet Sin Dios is indeed a Spanish name. They were ahardcore/anarcho punk band from Madrid. We've shared thestage with this band a few times. Too bad they decided to stopmaking music. On the cd booklet it says "thanks" to "all volunteers whohelped with sound. food and drinks at our shows..." Do youhave friends and people from others bands that help out settingup for the shows? Is there a scene like that where you live?Does your band get any airplay on the radio or tv where youlive? Are there late night radio shows on which your music getsplayed?Tanel I like playing in places, where they make an effort to cookyou a good meal and organise sleeping places. It also increasesyour social network and communities.Terry: Like we said before; DIY means do-it-together! There arealways people that are as crazy abou t music as we are. That'sone of the great things about playing everywhere. You alwaysmeet people that have a great passion for this kind of music. These are the folks that make a lot of effort to get a few bands totheir town to play. Most of them do it without asking anythingin return. Without those folks we would still be playing in ourrehearsal studio without ever getting out. Unfortunately TheNetherlands are only a small country and our music is not verypopular with the majority of music lovers. So we don't get anyairplay on the regular radio and television stations.Tohnny: Luckily there are still a bunch of small local radiostations that go against the grain of commercial music. TakeMoonrock Radio (http://www.moonrock.nll) for example:they played about six of our new songs and did an extensiveinterview one night. A great illustration of people who are ascrazy about metal, hardcore and punk music as we are (if noteven crazier). Plus the number of metal 'radio' stations on theweb keeps growing. We'd like to recommend Brutalism(http:/ /www.brutalism.com/), a Dutch online station that hasplayed Nuestros Derechos as well.Have you seen any good movies lately? Which ones? Have youread any good books lately? Have you heard anlr good bandslately?Terry: I've just seen Hellboy 2; the Golden Army. That was fun.

And I've been to a concert of All Shall Perish recently. They hadthe band Warbringer as support act, who really blew me away!Great old-school thrash band.Tanet: I just came back from my holiday in Norway. There Iwent to see the Dark Knight. Brilliant!! Hail Heath Ledger!Book: A star called Henry by Roddy Doyle. The set of the novelis the era of political upheaval in Ireland between the 1916Easter Rising and the eventual truce signed with England in'1,927,seen through the eyes of young Henry Smart, from hischildhood to early twenties. Henry is a member of the IrishCitizen Army.Bands: The Absence from Tampa, Floria. Their album 'Riders ofthe Plaque' is just great.Tohnn)': I'm always hopelessly behind with cultural things likefilms, movies, books, art expositions and fashion trends. So, agood movie I recently saw (on video) was The Ice Storm from1997,directed by Ang Lee. I love to read but rarely seem to findenough fime. However, this summer I enjoyed reading 'TheGod Delusion' by a British biologist named Richard Dawkins, and'jPod' by Douglas Coupland. Both books are great in theirown way. Bands? Mmm... Utrecht based group Karaktermoord(yes, that's a Dutch band name) have just released a split singlewith Tunguska from Ireland. They sound dark! Grindpad (yes, that's another Dutch band name) are also from Utrecht andhave recently released a 4-track ep called "Killing for a Living".Heavy and fast! Way less heavy and less dark is I Wish I Knew. Also from Utrecht, they debuted with a full-length cd called'The Bubble Revolution'. Don't expect metal or punk! Were all three of you born in Holland? Do any of you comefrom immigrant families from other parts of Europe or Africa orAsia?Terry:Nope, totally Dutch.Tanet:My mother is GermanTohnny: Why would you like to know that? Would it make ourmusic sound different?what are your plans for the rest of 2008 and for 2009? Is thereanything you would like to mention that I have not askedabout?Terry: Just wanna play live as much as we can, hopefullyincluding some shows abroad.Tanet:And to have lots of fun!Tohnny: Please check our web siteftttp:ZZwww.nuestros ) fo r all upcoming gigs. We're looking forward to meeting old friends and new peoplein real life.Have you heard the new Metallica? Do you like it?Terry: I don't listen to any other Metallica albums than Kill ,emAll, Ride the Lightning and Master of puppets. All the rest isanother band!Tanet No, I have not yet taken the effort to listen.Tohnny: Haha, you're funny!Terry. Tanet& Tohnny: Thanks an awful lot for your support!THE END.

DeathspellOmega: Manifestations2000-20012002Ms. Little Money for Cds (LMC): Despite the fact that this isprobably for the diehards only, the music on here is prettyenjoyable black metal, though there is nothing nearly as great asthe later albums. These are two separate compilations of earlymaterial.Mr. Ever the Optimist (EO): These two albums demonstrate theorigins of the band that some people consider to be the greatestblack metal band currently. If you have never heard the band, try myspace or youtube to find fansites and stuff like becausetheir website doesn't seem to be up and running ye! since thisband tries to be low-key.

They sound competent for what they do.Mr. Ever the optimist (Eo): These four songs have that hard-working, griff rock music, like a 2008 sound of Stone TemplePilots or maybe Godsmack. Not metal. They sound very muchlike American hard rock inJluenced by classic rock and moremodern hard rock. Has potential. Not metal. Some hardrock. Next!

I am not sure that I agree, actually. However, the category is irrelevant here because this is so good. It's kind of thrashy, fast, you know, uptempo metal. The songsare infectious, to make you sing along. The lyrics are inLithuaniary which is no problem, because here in Wisconsineverybody speaks thaf anyway. OK, maybe not, but it's easy tosing along, despite the language difference. Seriously. It's thatgood!!Mr. Ever the Optimist (EO): V"ry good stuff!
