Mode of operation

The switch shaft with themoving contacts rotates insidethe chamber containing thefixed contacts.

Compression vanes, whichrotate in conjunction with theswitch shaft, divide the arcingchamber into two subchamberseach of which changes in con-junction with the rotation.

During the switching move-ment, the compression vanesgenerate a pressure differencebetween the subchambers.The SF6 gas flows through anozzle, causes a directionalblow-out of the breaking arcand quenches it rapidly.

Interlocking is not necessaryas the CLOSED and GROUNDEDfunctions cannot be imple-mented simultaneously.

Motor operatingmechanism (option)

The manual operating mech-anisms can be equipped withmotor operating mechanismsfor the two/three-positionswitch-disconnector.

Operating voltages for motoroperating mechanisms:– 24, 48, 60, 125 V DC– 50/60 Hz 120 and 240 V AC

Electrical operation:

• Standard: Remote opera-tion (applied to terminal)

Shunt release (option)

Spring-operated/stored-energy mechanisms can beequipped with a shunt re-lease. Remote electricaltripping of the two/three-position switch-disconnectoris possible via the magneticcoil of the shunt release,e.g., transformer overtem-perature tripping.

To avoid thermal overloadingof the shunt release in theevent of a continuous signalthat may be applied, theshunt release is switched offvia an auxiliary switch whichis mechanically coupled withthe three-position switch-disconnector.

Auxiliary switch (option)

Each operating mechanismof the two/three-positionswitch-disconnector can beoptionally equipped with anauxiliary switch for theswitch position indication:– Function switch-discon-

Mode of operation

For the ready-for-service indi-cator, a gas-tight measuringbox is installed on the insideof the switchgear vessel.

A coupling magnet, whichis fitted to the bottom endof the measuring box, trans-mits its position to an outsidearmature through the stain-less steel switchgear vessel.This armature moves theready-for-service indicator ofthe switchgear.

While changes in the gasdensity during the loss ofgas, which are decisive forthe insulating capacity, aredisplayed, temperature-dependent changes in thegas pressure are not. The gasin the measuring box has thesame temperature as that inthe switchgear.

The temperature effect iscompensated via the samepressure change in both gasvolumes.

Insulating capacity

• The insulating capacity is veri-fied by testing the switchgearwith rated values of short-duration power-frequencywithstand voltage and light-ning impulse withstand volt-age according to IEC 60 694/VDE 0670-1000 andANSI/IEEE C37.20.3.

• The rated values are referredto sea level and to normalatmospheric conditions14.7 PSI, 68 °F, 0.00068 lb/ft3

humidity in accordance withIEC 60 071/VDE 0111 andANSI/IEEE.

• The insulating capacitydecreases with increasingaltitude.For site altitudes above1000 m/3281 ft (above sealevel) the standards do notprovide any guidelines for theinsulation rating. Instead,special regulations apply tothese altitudes.

Site altitude

• As the altitude increases, theinsulating capacity of insula-tion in air decreases due tothe decreasing air density.

• For site altitudes above1000 m/3281 ft a higherinsulation level must beselected. This results fromthe multiplication of therated insulation level for0 mm/0 ft to 1000 m/3281 ft(above sea level) with alti-tude correction factor Ka.
