Machine SelectionFrom the Finishing People…

Whether you make castings, stampings, fabricationsor desire to process gemstones, Raytech has amachine to suit your application. Raytech is the world’sleader in the manufacturing of small mass finishingequipment and accessories. We hold all of our equipmentto the highest quality standards. In the following pagesyou will see Raytech’s full product offering. Eachmachine will deburr, finish and burnish, and performmany other applications. They are task-oriented as is afile and sandpaper, or to use another term, anothertool in the tool box.

Machine Selection From The Industry Leader

Raytech is the oldest and largest manufacturer ofbench top mass-finishing equipment worldwide. Ourvibratory line is over 25 years old and our magneticline was introduced in 1996. No one has moremachines in use or more applications experience thanRaytech in vibratory or magnetic machines.

Vibratory Machines are utilized to deburr/finish irregular/blocky shapes, since the vibrating activity works themedia at blind or hidden areas passed over by theslide action of a conventional tumbler. Vibratorymachines process more complex part configurationsthan tumblers and run cleaner with plastic media. Partsize is not a problem in a vibratory machine. If the partfits in the channel and rotates, it will finish.

Magnetic Machines centrifugally finish non-ferrousparts that are small, so complex, of fine detail andhave areas conventional medias won’t reach that onlyfine small steel media shapes will reach to clean, smooth and burnish, imparting a uniform surface finishto all parts. Magnetic finishing has very short timecycles, in most cases limited to 30 minutes or less.

Oblique, Open End Machines are similar to rotarybarrel tumblers. They are easy to unload and tumblingaction is easily observed; however, longer cycle times are required than with rotary. Generally used forcleaning, part-on-part deburring/burnishing, drying, chemical applications and used with small or loosemedia/abrasives.

Magnetic Finishers

10

What Is A Centrifugal Magnetic Finisher? The machine is a direct drive, fan cooled design. Itsmagnetic disk is made up of many powerful magnetsthat are precisely placed in a cast disk. The alternatingpolarity is constantly changing, thereby allowing themedia to move freely in a liquid solution that constantlychanges its makeup. This, combined with centrifugalforce, allows for super quiet and fast time cycles.

Magnetic Finishing presents itself as the pinnacleof methods to efficiently burnish and polish small non-ferrous metals. With stainless steel pins as small as.010 in diameter and .250 in length, they are able towork in areas such as undercuts, recesses, slots, etc, where no previous method has been found suitable.Centrifugal magnetic finishing is quiet by comparisonto many other forms of finishing. On soft non-ferrousmetals, the finishing cycle can be as low as 30 minutes. This alone assures faster turnaround time on parts whencompared to any other method. Centrifugal magnetictumbling as an automated process addresses the mostintricate and detailed parts imaginable in finishes whereothers fail. It should be noted that on large, smooth orflat surfaces the finish will appear frosted and a slightbuffing or a dry finish is recommended.

Raytech Flex-SystemOnly with Raytech’s Flex-System can you utilize 3types of medias. Raytech models 410, and 610 utilizethree types of media. (Models 400, 900 and 1200 usewet burnishing pins only.)

results, as well as long cycle times.3. The media and compound should just barely be wet

with no standing water. It is recommended to useRaytech’s compound rinsing system to ensure proper dispensing of water and compound.

Basic Guidelines For Successful Finishing

1. Acceptable media to part ratio is approximately 70%media to 30% parts.

2. When running conventional medias that require awet process, be sure to have the correct amount ofwater and compound. Too much water will hamperthe vibratory action thus giving less than desired

Porcelain BallsPorcelain balls are utilized toachieve bright finishes without theuse of steel media. Because of itsshape, it imparts a single point ofcontact resulting in a very fine finish to almost any areait can reach. Porcelain balls will not leave impingementmarks that steel media produces on some softer metalsand/or flat surfaces. Their lighter weight lessens the dis-tortion potential for lighter work and wire forms.Very pop-ular for delicate parts, fine edge blanking and preciousmetal burnishing. Use with Raytech’s Compound D.Mixing the sizes is recommended for good vibratoryaction. Please note that a break-in period of 4 to 6 hoursis required.Density: 125 lbs/cu ft

Important! Under no circumstances should the pinsbe stored in the bowl on the machine. Doing so willcause the pins to magnetize, resulting in over-magnetiz-ing of pins, thus lessening their effectiveness.

Through use, discoloration (darkening) of the pins is nor-mal. They can be cleaned using a tri-sodium phosphatesolution. TSP is available at your hardware store.

How much media do I use?To determine media capacities, multiply the mediadensity (found with each individual media above) bythe cubic foot capacity of the tumbler (found in eachindividual tumbler listing). Examples are listed below.Note this is total media capacity only and actual mediaamounts will vary in direct proportion to the amount ofparts being tumbled. (See Basic Guidelines ForSuccessful Finishing on page 13.)

• Ceramic (90 lbs/cu ft) in a TV-10 (.10 cu ft).90 x .10 = 9 pounds of media.

• Porcelain Balls (125 lbs/cu ft) in an AV-40 (.35 cu ft).125 x .35 = 43.75 pounds of media.

• Stainless Steel Balls (300 lbs/cu ft) in an AV-25SS (.22 cu ft). 300 x .22 = 66 pounds of media.

• Ceramalite (65 lbs/cu ft) in a TV-5 (.05 cu ft).65 x .05 = 3.25 pounds of media.

• Plastic (55 lbs/cu ft) in an AV-75 (.75 cu ft).55 x .75 = 41.25 pounds of media.

• Plastic (55 lbs/cu ft) in an AV-18 (.18 cu ft).55 x .18 = 9.9 lbs.
