ACTIVE BRAZE ALLOYSActive Braze Alloys, or ABAs, combine braze alloys with active elements to allow for the direct joining of metal to ceramic. Essentially, the filler materials that are to be used have been formulated to incorporate one of these ‘activating’ elements to form an intermediate layer on the ceramic.

During the brazing procedure the activating element reacts with the ceramic substrate to form a series of highly complex inter-metallic metallurgical phases thus being subsequently wet by the molten filler material. ABA’s should be brazed in vacuum or argon. If brazed in argon, the vapor pressure of elements such as silver should be taken into consideration when programing the peak temperature. ABA’s are best suited for furnaces.

TIPS FOR BRAZING ABAs

1. ABAs must be brazed under deep vacuum or argon -ABAs will readily react with oxygen at highertemperatures and “lose” their active components.

2. Avoid rapid heating and cooling - Metals expand andshrink faster than ceramics. This can cause crackingand misconfiguration.

3. Longer soak time and higher temperatures - A longersoak time at a higher temperature is preferred togenerate that initial reaction layer.

BRAZING FLUXFlux removes oxides that form during the brazing process. Flux must be used when brazing unless in a controlled atmosphere. Fluxes are supplied in paste, liquid and dry form, including several for spray dispensing. We carry a wide range of flux and flux remover for every brazing and soldering application.

APPLICATION

Flux can be applied in any number of forms including flux paste, powder or pre-made brazing pastes that combine flux with filler metal powder. Flux can also be applied using brazing rods with a coating of flux, or a flux core. In either case, the flux flows into the joint when applied to the heated joint and is displaced by the molten filler metal entering the joint. Excess flux should be removed when the cycle is completed as flux left in the joint can lead to corrosion, impede joint inspection and prevent further surface finishing operations. Fluxes are generally selected based on their performance on particular base metals. To be effective, the flux must be chemically compatible with both the base metal and the filler metal being used. As a general rule, longer brazing cycles should use less active fluxes than short brazing operations.

Slitting capabilities provide customers with width flexibility per unique application

Brazing pastes are materials consisting of a metal alloy in a powder form that is well mixed with a binder. A brazing flux is typically added to paste to provide protection from oxidation. Pastes can be custom made to customer requirements to improve productivity, repeatability and ease of use in joining applications. The major advantage of brazing paste usage is that it can be dispensed in accurate and controlled volumes. With this level of control, braze joints are able to receive the same amount of paste on each application.

BRAZING PREFORMS

A Brazing Preform is any solid shape of filler that can be readily placed in an assembly prior to the heating cycle.

1. Elimination of costly hand feed operations.2. Accurate control of brazing alloy volume resulting in fewer incomplete joints.3. Provide access to automated brazing and soldering systems.4. Uniform wetting and smooth joint appearance.

Preform Capabilities• Ring Coiling Wire Diameters: .005 to .187 all alloys• Ring Diameters: .030” I.D. to 13” O.D.• Straight Cuts and Slugs: .005” diameter to .750”• Stamping: Blanked washers, discs, shims and special shapes .001” thick to .100” thick• Four Slide: An infinite variety of configurations• Cold-Headed Parts: Spheres and Discs• I.P.S. Band Rings: To Naby Specifications

RING COILING

P&I’s ring coiling department operates on an individual customer order basis. Each order is statistically controlled (S.P.C) to provide quality assurance to customer specifications.

• Lap Rings are formed with an overlap to allow compression “Cling” within the fitting.

• Gap Rings allow compression “Cling” where wire overlap is undesirable.

• Butt End Rings will not tangle, and lie flat without helix.

• Multi-Turn Rings are used when a joint requires a volume of filler that cannot be provided by a Single Turn Ring.

• Edgewounds are an economical alternative to a washer. They are made by winding flat wire on edge.

STAMPINGS

Prince and Izant manufactures custom stamped preforms from over 1,000 tools already on our shelves. Chances are we have existing tooling to meet your specific requirements. If we need to develop new tooling, our precision in-house machine shop keeps cost and lead-time to a minimum.

• Slugs - Normally the most economical preform to manufacture. Slugs can be made from any brazing wire and cut to required length.

• Washers, Discs and Shims - Fabricated from brazing alloy strip and used where joint clearances or joint design prevent the use of wire forms.

• Multi-Slide Parts - Brazing wire and strip can be formed into an infinite variety of configurations to meet customer application requirements.

• Cold-Headed Parts - Primarily spheres and disc shapes. Used in joints of limited access that require a large volume of alloy.
