BENEF ITS :

• Movement in all directions - absorbing seismic energy withlow activation forces, standard seismic bracing is adequatefor adjacent piping. Ball or bellows joints havesignificant breakaway torques or thrust loads that exceedstandard seismic bracing.

• Fire Sprinkler Systems - UL listed, the Fireloop providesseismic protection in a compact, easy to install compo-nent. See the Fireloop Design Guide or websitewww.metraflex.com for full details.

• Gas - Protect against devastating fire by installingC.S.A./A.G.A. certified Metraloops in gas lines asthey cross the building's seismic joints or at theconnection to gas-fired equipment.

• Reduce Costs - Metraloops are far less expensive thanalternative seismic expansion joints, particularlyball-joints.

• Protect Equipment - Metraloops allow equipmentsuch as boilers and chillers to move independentlyfrom the building during an earthquake. Preventnozzles from cracking or shearing in earthquakesby installing Metraloops at the connection.

For Seismic Installations,see Page 11.

YOUR F I RST CHO ICEBECAUSE . . .

• Path of Least Resistance - which is why GUIDESare not always required. With an incredibly low force tocompress, the Loop is the path of least resistanceabsorbing thermal movement before the pipe begins tobow. Long before thermal expansion develops enoughforce to start to compress traditional bellows type jointsor hard pipe loops, the column loading strength of pipeis exceeded and the pipe begins to bow. Hence theneed for numerous and specifically placed pipe guidesup and down the pipe run in traditional piping systems.

• Anchor Loads - Almost None - compared to bellows orhard pipe loops. Bellows type joints exert tremendousanchor loads, requiring answers to: is the concretethick enough, what size anchor bolts, is the steel strongenough, where do I make the attachments??? TheMetraLoop anchor loads are so low; these questionsmay be immaterial.

• Amount of movement - virtually any. Stock sizes areshown on pages 4-5, however movements greaterthan 3 or 6 FEET! are not uncommon.

TYP ICAL SPEC I F ICATION

Provide flexible expansion loops of size and type notedon drawings. Flexible loops shall consist of two flexiblesections of hose and braid, two 90° elbows, and an180° return assembled in such a way that the pipingdoes not change direction, but maintains its coursealong a single axis. Flexible loops shall have a factorysupplied, center support nut located at the bottom of the180° return, and a drain/air release plug. Flexibleloops shall impart no thrust loads to system supportanchors or building structure. Loops shall be installedin a neutral, pre-compressed or pre-extended conditionas required for the application. For steam service, loops must be installed with flexible legs horizontal toprevent condensate buildup. Install and guide permanufacturer’s recommendations. Materials ofconstruction and end fitting type shall be consistent withpipe material and equipment/pipe connection fittings. For natural gas service, connectors shall be A.G.A.certified. Flexible expansion loops to be “Metraloop®” asmanufactured by the Metraflex Company®, Chicago, IL.

THERMAL EXPANSION:The MetraLoop is simply a flexible variationof the tradition hard pipe loop. For any givenlength of pipe and given temperature change, the amount of movement can be calculatedand the appropriate MetraLoop can bedesigned. When installed in a pipe run theMetraLoop’s legs simply bend laterally tocompensate for the pipe’s expansion orcontraction. Unique to the loop is theincredibly low amount of force required tobend its legs, minimizing anchor loads, guiding and installation costs.

SEISMIC MOVEMENT:The two flexible legs connected by anunrestrained return bend, will allow apredetermined amount of pipe movement inany direction. (Typical design movement is±4 inches in any direction, howevermovement of several feet in any direction ispossible). With the loops extreme flexibilityand low force to move, the loop absorbs theseismic energy and imposes minimal loadson the adjacent pipe hangers, supports ornozzle loads on major equipment. See page11 for more details.

Illustrated below are the typical orientations for the MetraLoop. No support is required for the 180° return bend for standard loops 2-1/2”diameter and smaller. However due to the weight of the return bend and the extreme flexibility of the loop, larger sizes require support toprevent the 180 from sagging in all orientations except when installed hanging down as shown in illustration #2. Guides are recommendedbut not always required see bottom of page 6 for more details. Special Note - For steam service minimizing the entrapment of condensateis crucial and loops should be installed as shown in illustration #1. Detailed installation considerations are noted on the following pages.

T Y P I CA L I N S T A L L A T I O N S

SUPPORT MUST BE PROVIDED TO PREVENT THE LOOP FROMDROOPING OR TORQUING PIPE. SUPPORT MUST ALLOW THE180° RETURN, TO MOVE HORIZONTALLY BACK AND FORTH 1/4",AS THE LOOP FLEXES.

*RECOMMENDED INSTALLATION FOR STEAM. ANY OTHERORIENTATION MAY CAUSE CONDENSATE TO COLLECT.

INSTALLATION/GUIDING CONSIDERATIONS

Centered in a pipe run: when the loop is installed in the middle of a pipe run, the loop will flex symmetricallyand the 180 will move toward and away from the pipe. The 180 support should be designed with enough slack toallow the 180 to move 10% of the loops designed movement. For example a loop designed for ± 4 inches of axialmovement will see the 180 return bend move 4 tenths (0.4”) of an inch.

One end anchored: When installed at or near an anchor the 180 will have a lateral component to its movement,in addition to the movement shown above (“Centered in a pipe run”). The lateral movement will be 50% of thethermal expansion or contraction and it will be in the same direction as the pipe movement. Again a sufficientlyslack hanger rod or slide support is all that is required.

Guiding Requirements: Thermal Movement -Being the most flexible component of your pipingsystem, the MetraLoop is the path of least resistance. And unlike other expansion joint devises, bellows, hard pipe loops, ball or slip type joints, the loop willabsorb any thermal expansion before your pipedevelops a tendency to bow out of position. As longas the loops design parameters are not exceeded theloop does not need guides.

However, the Mechanical Contractors Association ofAmerica “Guidelines for Quality Piping Installations”section 3 Pipe Hangers and Supports, suggests toensure movement is directed as expected and if yourpiping is supported on pipe hangers that will swingmore than 4 degrees from vertical when the pipemoves it is recommended that a pipe guide beinstalled anywhere within 15 pipe diameters on eachside of the MetraLoop. Loops anchored on one sideneed only one guide on the traveling side.

Guiding Requirements - Seismic Movement - Whenspanning a buildings seismic expansion joint, guidesare not required. See page 11.

A P P L I CA T I O N SNESTED METRALOOPS:Nested MetraLoops can be used in parallel piperuns to keep all the expansion or seismicdevices at one location. MetraLoops can benested in any sequence, large inside of smallerdiameters or small inside of large and anynumber of pipes can be made in a nest.

C.S.A./A.G.A. GAS LOOPS:Selected sizes, designs and materials ofconstruction for the MetraLoops have beentested and certified by C.S.A./A.G.A. for use ongas pipe lines. These MetraLoops are beingused primarily in commercial and industrialfacilities located in seismic zones to minimizethe possibility of gas line ruptures. Firescaused by broken gas lines are the major causeof damage after earthquakes.

MEDICAL LOOPS:Many healthcare facilities, especially inseismically rated areas, require flexibility in allpiping systems. Optional cleaning, capping, andcertifying, for all medical gas applicationsincluding medical oxygen, vacuum, andcompressed air. For sealed systems, such asoxygen service, loops are supplied withoutdrain/air release plugs. The Metraloop isaccepted by the California Office of StatewideHealth Planning and Development (OSHPD) foruse in hospitals.

SPRINKLER SEISMIC LOOP:Historically, seismic flexibility in fire sprinklerlines has been accomplished using a complexseries of couplings. The UL listed Fireloop is apre-tested factory warranted seismic expansionjoint that is compact and can be oriented in anydirection. The Fireloop meets NFPA-13standards A-6-4.1 & 4.2 for seismic joints infire sprinkler systems. See catalog Fireloop orwww.metraflex.com for complete information.

CORNER LOOPS:One Metraloop simultaneously absorbs thethermal expansion of two pipe runs. Space-saving inside corner Metraloop eliminates theneed for an anchor at the corner. Support mustbe provided to prevent Metraloop fromdrooping or torquing pipe and must allow forsufficient movement.

LINED METRALOOPS:Liners are used when flow velocity exceeds 25ft/sec. through the hose assembly or when thefluid is erosive.

A liner will reduce turbulence and pressure dropif this is critical to the application. Spiral woundinterlocked flexible hose is commonly used forthe liner.

CONTAINMENT LOOPS ORSTEAM JACKETED PIPING:Containment MetraLoops for hazardous mediacan be built of almost any compatible material.A large inspection port in the return bend is acommon option. Containment loops can bedesigned for thermal expansion, seismic, tanksettling, nozzle loading requirements, etc. . .

Steam jacketed loops are used to heat or reheatmedia and at the same time absorb orcompensate for thermal movement. Steamconnections can be made anywhere except inthe flexible legs.

SEWAGE (POOP) LOOP:Lined to minimize sediment collection, theseloops are designed with a clean out "T" tofacilitate servicing and to comply with mostcode requirements. The loops are installed inthe sewage lines as they exit a buildingfoundation to allow for building settlement. They are also used in and outside the buildingto accommodate seismic movement.

Use Metraloopson storage tanks, building separations, or anylarge equipment where stress relief is required. One assembly may be used to simultaneouslyabsorb seismic, thermal, and settlementmovements.

ROOF LOOPS:Due to their large forces, most rooftop thermalexpansion devices require penetration of theroof to anchor and support the piping.Metraloops permit the use of wooden sleepersor other similar supports that maintain theintegrity of the roofing material.

BURIED LOOPS:All of the benefits of using The Metraloop forabove ground systems can be applied to buriedsystems as well. The Metraloop will virtuallyeliminate all anchor loads from the systemreducing anchor plate and thrust blockrequirements. The Metraloop will take up 75%less space than conventional hard pipe loopslowering excavation cost, and can beincorporated into the design of conduitsystems. The Metraloop will provide anadditional benefit of protecting the pipingsystem and equipment from the effects ofbuilding settling and soil shifting.

TRENCH BOX SYSTEM:Requiring a fraction of the space of hard pipeloops, excavation and dirt disposal areminimized using the Metraloop. Rack supportsusing pipe rollers or slide supports are ideal forthe pipe runs.

The Metraloop is an inexpensive alternative to other methodsof designing for thermal expansion such as bellows-typeexpansion joints, slip-type (packed) expansion joints or hard-pipe loops.

System costs are reduced because the Metraloop exerts onlya fraction of the anchor loads of all other type expansionjoints. And, due to it's natural flexibility, the Metralooprequires far fewer pipe guides than are required for bellowsexpansion joints and takes up less space than a hard-pipeloop. (See inside front cover for anchor load and spacecomparisons.)

Metraloops reduce the entire cost of the system in three ways:

* Reduce Anchor Costs - Smaller anchor loads means smaller, less expensive anchors. No expensive thrust blocks or heavy-duty main anchors are required.

* Reduce Guiding Costs - Only two pipe guides are requiredper Metraloop. Compared to the stringent requirements of otherexpansion joints, this can add up to a considerable savings.

* Reduce Construction Material Costs - Metraloops requiremuch less space than hard pipe loops. That means smallervaults when digging steam trenches, less concrete and less dirtfor removal.

METRALOOP

Metraloops can be used in any thermal expansion application.Virtually any amount of movement is available.

Steel Pipe - Metraloops are available in flanged, weld, or groovedor any combination to suit the system requirements.

Stainless Steel Pipe - For corrosive or seawater applications, allstainless steel construction is available.

Copper Pipe - The column strength of small diameter copper pipe isvery low. Bellows type copper compensators require many pipeguides to maintain column strength. Metraloops exert no pressurethrust on the pipe reducing this requirement.

Plastic Pipe- Typically has much greater coefficients of expansionthan either copper or steel and is more brittle. Again, the Metraloopwith its low spring rate is ideal.

The best configuration to accommodate thermal expansion isthe Metraloop. When the loop is installed in a pipe run thatis expanding or contracting axially, the flexible legs, beingperpendicular to the movement vector, are flexed laterally. Aslong as the legs are designed with sufficient live length theoffset amount never exceeds the elastic limit of the hose and itwill flex indefinitely.

In hot and cold water systems, Metraloops may be installed inany orientation relative to the piping and at any locationalong the pipe run. The pipes expansion or contraction willfind it's way to the Metraloop. Due to the loops ability toaccommodate large amounts of movement, it should belocated in such a way as to limit stress on branch lines.

In steam systems, care must be taken to prevent condensatebuild up that could be harmful to other componentsdownstream of the loop. For this reason we require steamMetraloops to be oriented horizontally. (See page 3,Illustration #1). Vertical steam risers do not apply. As anadditional safety precaution all steam loops are doublebraided. Please specify service when ordering.

Flexible stainless steel hose and braid is an excellent product for absorbing lateral offset and angular movement. It is not well suited foraxial compression, or torque. Under axial compression the braid is relaxed which lowers the pressure rating, and torque introduces complexstresses that quickly fatigue the hose.

With the above in mind, if hose and braid is to be used as the stress relieving, movement compensating component of a piping system itmust be installed in a configuration that minimizes the axial compression of the hose and braid.

BENEFITSThe Metraloop is a better alternative to other methodsof designing for seismic movement such as dual-tiedbellows expansion joints, or ball-joints.

System costs are reduced because the Metraloopexerts only a fraction of the anchor loads of a ball-jointor a bellows expansion joint. That means no expensivethrust blocks or heavy-duty anchors are required. (SeeInside Front Cover for anchor load comparison)

The extreme flexibility of the Metraloop also makes itideal as a seismic connector to equipment such asboilers, chillers, and fan-coil units. Metraloopsminimize equipment nozzle loading conditions.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONSThe randomness of themovement in an earthquakerequires that seismic expansionjoints be capable of movementin any direction. Of all the sixpossible directions ±X, ±Y, ±Z(Figure 1) the Metraloop is theoptimal configuration ascompared with other type offlexible hose and braid seismic connectors. By design, flexible hose and braid connectors are limited toangular motion and lateral offset. Axial, compressive,or torsional movement is not possible. By fabricatingan assembly with two sections of hose parallel to eachother, and allowing the 180° return bend to movefreely, the Metraloop minimizes the likelihood ofcompressive movement.

For movement in the +X, -X & planes (expansion &contraction), the Metraloop uses hose offset motion toachieve this movement. Also for movement in the +Z,-Z planes (front & back), the Metraloop uses hoseoffset motion. Movement in the +Y, -Y Plane (up-down), the legs of the Metraloop use hose angularmotion for this movement.

Note: The use of assemblies with flexible hose sectionsoriented at 90° relative to each other can result in axialcompression or torque of the hose. This may result infailure or shorter service life of the assembly. A non-structural disadvantage of these types ofconfigurations is the cost and logistics of thenecessary offsets in the pipe runs or additionalsupports required.

APPLICATIONSMetraloops can be used in all types of systemsincluding steam, hot or chilled water, medical gas, natural gas (See A.G.A./C.S.A. certified drawing, page16), fire sprinklers, sewage, chemical, and petroleumproducts. Special applications requiring lined hose forhigh velocity, double-braid for high pressures, and allstainless steel construction for media compatibility areavailable (See pages 7-9 for a few of these specialapplications.

WJE was commissioned to perform cycle testing on 4",6", and 8" diameter MetraLoops simulating themovement that would be expected in an earthquake. AllMetraLoops which were submitted passed the cycletesting.

Description of test procedure and equipment:MetraLoops designed for 4 inches of movement in anydirection were pressurized and mounted between twocarts. The carts moved perpendicular to each other andwere set to simultaneously cycle at +4 inches and -4inches at a rate of 2 cycles per second for 30 cycles. After 30 cycles, none of the MetraLoops showed anysigns of stress, damage or fatigue.

After the successful completion of the original test, a 4-inch diameter MetraLoop was subjected toprogressively larger amplitudes of movement untilfailure. First for 30 cycles at ±6 inches and then ±8 inches (100% above design movement). At 100%above design movement, the MetraLoop started to leak.

The full test report and a video of the testing is availableupon request, please contact the factory.
