• Scientists collect data using the METRIC SYSTEM.

Three Basic Units of Measurement

• Weight – Grams

• Distance – Meters

• Liquid – Liters

Adding Prefixes to Basic Units

• KILOgram• MILLIgram

• KILOmeter• MILLImeter

• KILOliter• MILLIliter

Prefixes

• Kilo (K)

• Hecto (H) Large Measurements

• Deka (Dk)

• Deci (d)

• Centi (c) Small Measurements

• Milli (m)

How can you remember them in order?

Why should you know them in order?

• It makes it easy to convert measurements.

• Example Problem: How many centimeters are in 15 meters?

Died -Put your pencil on the prefix that you start with.

(meters)

By -Move your pencil to the final prefix

(CENTImeters)

Drinking -Count how many times you move your pencil.

Chocolate -Move the decimal point like you moved your pencil.
